Chapter 21 - Sable's Question

The thing about Sable Nkosi was that she asked questions the way a surgeon cuts once, precisely, and then waits for the result without additional commentary.

She asked Ray hers on a Tuesday evening when they were both in the east perimeter maintenance corridor checking equipment a rotating duty assignment that both of them had drawn simultaneously for the third time, which was either a coincidence or a pattern that Vega's scheduling algorithm had decided was acceptable.

They had been working in silence for twenty minutes. Sable's version of silence was comfortable the way deep water is comfortable the absence of noise in a place that has weight.

Then:

"The Blood Memory is changing."

Ray looked at her.

"I've been carrying fragments of Stage 6 and 7 cognition for eight months. They started as noise. They've become voices isn't the right word. Patterns. I know things I didn't learn and I don't know how I know them."

"Have you told the medical team?"

"No. I'm telling you."

The specific weight of that. She was telling him. Not the doctors, not the command structure, not even Anya, who was her closest person in the unit. Him.

"Why?"

"Because you're the only person in this citadel who is also something that didn't used to be possible. I thought you might understand the specific quality of carrying something inside you that has its own perspective."

He did. He understood it extremely well.

"Are the patterns hostile?"

"No. That's what concerns me. They're informative. The Stage 7 fragment knows how a Sovereign thinks. I can feel the tactical structure of a Sovereign's combat decision-making at the edge of my awareness, like a second mind running parallel calculations."

"Does it feel like it's taking you over?"

"Not yet."

Not yet. Ray heard the not yet and understood it.

"If it starts to will you know?"

"I think so."

"If you know, tell me first. Not because I can fix it. But because"

He thought about how to say this.

"Because if you're carrying something that has its own perspective, it matters that someone knows you while the perspective is still yours."

Sable looked at him for a moment.

"Okay."

They went back to the equipment check. Nothing more was said. But something had been established between them the specific understanding of two people who are both holding things that don't have names yet and have decided to trust each other with the holding.
