His eyes scanning the empty space ahead.
"Great," he muttered under his breath. "Now I'm chasing air."
Still…something didn't feel right.
He stopped near the center. Looked around once.
Then again.
Nothing.
But the feeling stayed.
Reyansh exhale, running a hand through his messy hair.
"I know you're here," he said, his voice low but steady.
The wind answered.
Silence stretched.
For a second, even he wasn't sure anymore.
Then- a shift.
So slight it could've been missed.
Reyansh turned quickly.
No one.
The rooftop stood exactly the same as before.
He frowned. "Yeah…okay. That's normal."
He took a step back, then another, eyes still searching like he didn't fully trust what he was seeing.
After a moment, he let out a quiet breath. "Maybe I'm just overthinking."
He turned toward the door.
Walked. Didn't look back.
The second door shut-
A figure dropped soundlessly behind where he had been standing.
Still. Watching and unseen.
A pause.
Then a faint voice, barely carried by the wind-
"…too early."
The rooftop fell silent again.
Like nothing had ever been there.
(Streets of Vyantara- Night time)
The streets of Vyantara shimmered under dim yellow lights, alive even at this late hour.
Inside a sleek black car, Ashi sat back, her fingers tapping impatiently against the seats. The presence of her bodyguard beside her felt heavier than the silence.
It's suffocating, she thought, staring out of the window. Every time…always watched.
Her gaze shifted to the street outside- people walking freely, laughter echoing faintly in the distance.
I just need some air…
After a brief pause, she spoke, trying to sound casual. "Can you stop near that food stall? I'm feeling hungry."
The bodyguard didn't hesitate. "Please wait in the car ma'am. I'll bring something for you. It's not safe outside."
Ashi nodded lightly. "Fine…but don't take long."
The moment he stepped out and moved away-
Her expression changed.
Her fingers tightened around the handle.
"This is my chance."
She slipped out of the car quietly and shut the door with care, blending into the night before anyone could notice.
A faint smile touched her lips. "Finally…"
Pulling her hood slightly forward, she lowered her face. "Better stay unrecognized."
For the first time in a while, she walked without being followed.
A sudden shout broke the calm.
A child ran across the road.
A bike sped toward him- too fast.
The brakes failed.
The world seemed to pause.
The child froze.
And then-
Something moved.
A figure stepped into the road, swift and precise, pulling the child away just in time.
The bike rushed past with a harsh screech.
Silence followed.
The child trembled, eyes wide.
The figure stood beside him, calm…almost untouched by the chaos.
"Don't be afraid," he said quietly. "You're safe now. Are you hurt?"
The child shook his head, voice unsteady. "N-no…thank you…thank you so much…"
The figure gave a small nod.
No drama. No attention.
Just quiet control.
Ashi stepped forward before he could disappear.
"Wait."
He stopped- but didn't turn fully.
For a second, the noise of the street faded, like everything else had stepped back.
Ashi took a breath. "Why do you always vanish like a shadow?" she asked, her voice steady but searching. "That day…I couldn't even thank you saving my life. You were gone before I could say anything."
No response.
She stepped closer. "Who are you, actually? And how do you always know when someone's in danger."
A brief silence.
The wind shifted.
He finally turned just enough for his presence to be felt- not seen.
"Names don't matter," he said, calm… distant. "And danger doesn't need an invitation."
Ashi frowned slightly. "That's not an answer."
"It's the only one you need."
She didn't move. "Then why help at all?"
A pause.
Then-
"Because someone has to."
Before she could say another word-
He was gone.
Like he had never been there.
Ashi didn't think.
The moment he vanished, she moved.
"Wait-!"
She turned the corner he had taken just seconds ago, her steps quick, almost uneven. The street ahead stretched out under dim lights, quiet… normal.
Too normal.
No one.
No sound of footsteps. No shadow slipping away. Nothing.
Ashi slowed down, her breathing slightly uneven as she looked around again- left, right, behind.
"Where…?" she murmured under her breath.
For second, she thought she saw something shift near the far end of the lane.
She took a step forward.
But it was gone.
Just an empty road and flickering light.
Ashi exhaled slowly, a mix of frustration and disbelief settling in. "Seriously…?"
Voices began rising behind her.
The crowd had started gathering around the child.
"Is he okay?"
"Where did that man go?"
"I didn't even see him properly…"
Ashi walked back slowly, blending into the edge of the small crowd.
The child clung to his mother, still shaken.
"He just… came out of nowhere," he said, his voice trembling." And then he disappeared…"
"Disappeared?" someone repeated.
"I told you, I didn't dee anyone," another man argued. "Maybe the bike just missed him."
Ashi frowned slightly.
She had seen him.
Clearly.
Hadn't she?
"Ma'am!"
The sharp voice cut through her thoughts.
Her bodyguard rushed toward her, worry written all over his face. "Where were you?" I you to stay in the car!"
Ashi straightened a little, her expression settling back into something calm. "Relax," she said. "I just stepped out for some air."
"That's not safe," he insisted. "Anything could have happened."
She glanced once more at the road- the exact spot where he had been standing just moments ago.
Nothing.
"I'm fine," she said quietly, "Let's just go."
As she walked back toward the car, his words returned to her.
Names don't matter.
Danger doesn't need an invitation.
Ashi frowned slightly, her grip tightening around the car door.
"Then who are you…" she murmured under her breath.
The night gave no answer.
(The next day at school)
The next morning, the school felt no different from any other day.
Student filled the corridors, voices overlapping, laughter echoing through the wide halls of Vyrantara's most prestigious school. Everything looked normal- orderly, routine, predictable.
Ashi walked through the corridor, her bag sling over one shoulder, her mind far from the noise around her.
Names don't matter…
She slowed slightly.
For some reason, those words hadn't left her since last night.
"…Weird," she murmured under her breath.
On the upper floor.
Reyansh leaned against the railing, watching the crowd below like he had nothing better to do.
Ayaan stood beside him, calm as always.
Aarohi flipped through her notebook, half-listening.
Reyansh exhaled lightly. "You ever feel like…" he started, then paused.
Aarohi glanced him. "Like what?"
He tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing just a bit. "Like strange things happen at night in the city."
Ayaan didn't react.
Aarohi raised an eyebrow. "You finally lost it."
Reyansh let out a small laugh. "Maybe."
But for a second-
His gaze shifted.
Not toward them.
Somewhere else.
Below-
Ashi stopped.
She didn't know why.
But for a brief moment, she felt it again.
That same presence.
Faint.
Unseen.
She turned slightly-
But there was nothing.
Just students passing by.
Then Ashi goes to her classroom IX-D
High above-
Where no one was looking-
A shadow moved along the edge of the building.
Silent.
Watching.
His gaze rested for a moment.
On her.
"…you really shouldn't get involved," he said quietly.
The wind carried the words away.
And just like that-
He was gone.
(The Next Day At School)
The school buzzed with its usual energy.
Student filled the corridors, laughter and chatter blending into noise that felt familiar.
Ashi walked through it all, distracted.
Names don't matter…
She tightening her grip on her bag.
Why was that still bothering her?
"…Weird," she muttered.
On the upper floor-
Reyansh leaned against the railing, watching everything below.
Ayaan stood beside him, quiet.
Aarohi flipped a page in her notebook.
Reyansh spoke, "Bro, I swear our chemistry teacher give more homework than the whole world would combine."
Aarohi didn't look up.
She said, "Just say that you are not able to finish the homework."
Reyansh snapped, "Hey! I did the whole homework but I couldn't do the last two pages."
Aarohi looked up narrowing her eyes, "The homework was of two pages only. You're a liar."
Reyansh looked away, "who told I haven't done the homework. I have completed the last week's homework just in one night."
Ayaan laughed, "I knew it."
Reyansh's gaze shifted.
Sharp.
Focused.
Below-
Ashi stopped.
That feeling again.
Stronger this time.
She slowly looked up-
Towards the upper floor.
For split second-
Her eyes met someone's.
Reyansh.
He didn't smile.
Didn't look away immediately.
Just watched.
Like he was trying to figure something out.
Ashi frowned slightly.
Why is he looking at me like that…?
From the railing-
Aarohi noticed Reyansh looking at someone and nudged Ayaan to see where Reyansh was looking.
Ayaan smirked and looked at Aarohi.
Aarohi teasingly grinned. "Are you in love~. And who wouldn't fell in love with the mayor's daughter."
Ayaan said, "Should I fix an appointment for you with her?"
Reyansh made a weird expression and told, "Do whatever you want…"
Aarohi, "Okay…then I am going to tell her."
She pretended as if she is really going to say Ashi.
Reyansh said in frustration, "Arree!"
Before anything else could happen-
A sudden announcement echoed through the school.
"All students, please return to your classrooms immediately."
A sudden announcement echoed through the school.
"All students, please return to your classrooms immediately."
The tone wasn't normal.
Not routine.
Something was wrong.
The corridor shifted.
Noise turned into confusion.
Students began moving faster.
Whispers started spreading.
Above-
Reyansh straightened slightly.
"…that's new," he muttered.
Ayaan picked up the bag.
And went to his classroom.
Calm and unaffected.
Far above-
Hidden from all of them-
A shadow stood still.
Watching everything unfold.
"…it's starting," he said quietly.
