Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: The Council of Jade and Shadows

The morning sun rose coolly over Yuan Yu's residence, though distant voices from the sect's council hall carried even this far. The young master's senses— remarkably sharp—caught every echo, every murmur.

A major gathering would take place today.

Yuan Yu, however, had no desire to stand at the center of it. His father and uncle were more than enough to shoulder the weight of politics. He ate only a light meal. Appetite had never come easily to him.

As the sun climbed higher, the hour of the council arrived.

Before leaving, Yuan Yu walked through the garden's quiet stillness and plucked a single pomegranate blossom from the solitary tree standing watch among the endless peach blossoms. The rest of the courtyard was a sea of pale petals…

but that lone pomegranate tree held a strange, private significance in his heart.

When he entered the grand hall, disciples were already seated in disciplined silence, waiting for Sect Leader Zhen to speak.

Yuan Yu took his place quietly, seated slightly to his father's left. To his right sat his uncle, Yuan Han.

The chamber itself was vast and airy, its high ceiling carved with ancient symbols—turtles and storks intertwined with rivers and trees, emblems of wisdom, tranquility, and longevity.

Jade was everywhere: antique vases gleaming softly, delicate tea sets resting untouched, rare books arranged like treasures.

Even the patterned rug beneath the council table seemed to radiate warmth.

At the heart of the room, three figures shaped the atmosphere with their distinct presence.

Sect Leader Zhen sat with composed authority, absentmindedly turning jade prayer beads between his fingers. His gaze held both sharp awareness and deep patience.

"This council is crucial for the future of our sect," he said calmly.

"Recent events have revealed threats—both within our borders and beyond them."

Across from him, Yuan Han leaned back slightly, his expression stern and calculating, the ruby ring on his finger catching the lanternlight.

"External threats alone?" he repeated. "Brother, it is time to strengthen ourselves. The world grows restless. We must arm our sect… and seize opportunity before others do."

Yuan Yu remained silent, youthful but composed, listening from the other end of the table. His white robes shimmered faintly, yet his eyes missed nothing. Every tension in the room settled into him like ink.

Sect Leader Zhen's brow furrowed thoughtfully.

Yuan Han continued, his voice firm. "We make these decisions for prosperity—and for the future of our children. Power is the only shield that protects what we hold dear."

At last, Yuan Yu cleared his throat softly.

"Father… Uncle," he said, requesting permission to speak.

Both men turned toward him.

"I have spent the past few nights walking through the city markets," Yuan Yu continued. "Other sects are moving as well. Rumors speak of distant forces approaching… even whispers of the White Dragon Sect, though I have not seen them myself."

His gaze sharpened.

"Strength is necessary. But strategy must also be guided by caution… and insight."

For a long moment, Sect Leader Zhen studied his son. Within Yuan Yu's eyes, he saw elegance—but also the quiet rise of leadership.

"Yuan Yu is right," Sect Leader Zhen said at last. "Wisdom requires patience. Yet, Yuan Han…"

His voice softened slightly.

"We cannot dismiss your concerns entirely."

The uncle fell silent. Then, after a pause, he nodded.

"For now," he said, "I will wait."

The council gradually came to an end.

Meals were shared. Laughter echoed briefly through the hall. Disciples departed in orderly groups. Yuan Yu joined the outward calm… but beneath it all, something restless lingered in his chest. Change was coming.

He could feel it, looming just beyond the horizon.
