Sarah POV
The pack house smells like him.
Sarah walks through the negotiation building and the scent hits her instantly. It's woodsmoke and something wild and something that makes her body remember things her mind has been trying to forget. The mate bond wakes up like it never died. It wakes up screaming.
Sarah forces herself to breathe normally. She forces herself to keep walking. She forces herself to remember that she's not the girl who wore a white dress. She's the head strategist of Crimson Ridge pack. She's powerful. She's untouchable. She's ice.
The negotiation table is full of people.
Warriors from Mason's pack are sitting on one side. Strategists and advisors and people who matter. On the other side are the seats where Victoria and Sarah will sit. In the center of it all, at the head of the table, is Mason.
Sarah sees him but doesn't recognize him at first.
This isn't the boy she loved. This isn't even the young Alpha who asked her to be his mate. This is someone different. Someone older. Someone harder. Someone who looks like the weight of the world is crushing him. He looks tired. Not just tired from lack of sleep. Tired in a way that suggests his soul is exhausted.
He looks broken.
Sarah watches him for half a second and sees all of it at once. She sees a powerful Alpha who's ruled his territory well. She sees a man who's made hard decisions. She sees someone who carries regret like a physical weight. She sees a stranger.
Then he looks up.
Their eyes meet and Sarah's entire body freezes.
Time stops. The room disappears. Everything except Mason disappears. For one second, just one, Sarah is that girl again. That girl who loved him. That girl who planned a future with him. That girl who thought nothing could ever break the bond between them.
Then the moment shatters.
Mason's face goes completely white. His entire body goes rigid like someone electrocuted him. His eyes change from confused to shocked to something wild that Sarah can't name. The mate bond erupts between them like a bomb going off inside her chest.
It's violent.
It's sudden.
It's overwhelming.
Sarah gasps and has to grip the table to stay standing. The bond is alive. The bond is screaming. The bond is pulling at her with a force that five years of separation didn't kill. The bond is saying that her mate is right there. The bond is saying that she belongs to him and he belongs to her.
The bond is a liar.
Sarah meets Mason's eyes and holds them. She doesn't flinch. She doesn't look away. She lets him see that she recognizes him. She lets him see that his rejection didn't destroy her. She lets him see that she's become something greater than anything he could have imagined.
She lets him see that he means nothing to her anymore.
It's a lie but it's a convincing lie. And it's the only thing keeping her from breaking apart in front of everyone.
Mason's mouth opens slightly like he's about to speak. Like he's about to say her name. Like he's about to acknowledge that his dead mate just walked into his pack house. But he doesn't say anything. He just stares at her like she's a ghost. Like she's something impossible. Like his entire world is rearranging itself.
Victoria stands up and looks between Sarah and Mason and Sarah knows that Victoria sees everything.
Victoria sees Sarah's rigid posture. Victoria sees Mason's inability to look away. Victoria sees the tension in the room that nobody else understands. Victoria watches and waits like she already knew this would happen. Like she brought Sarah here specifically for this moment.
Sarah walks to her seat at the table and sits down with her back completely straight. She pulls out her documents. She places her territorial analysis maps in front of her. She becomes a professional. She becomes a strategist. She becomes someone who doesn't feel anything.
Victoria sits down beside her and whispers one word that only Sarah can hear.
"Breathe."
Sarah takes a breath and realizes that everyone is staring at them.
Mason's people look confused. Victoria's people look alert like they know something is happening but don't understand what. The energy in the room is wrong. It's too thick. It's too charged. It's like lightning waiting to strike.
The lead advisor from Mason's pack, a man named Derek, clears his throat and tells everyone that they're here to discuss territorial boundaries. He tells them that both packs have claims to the same resources. He tells them that they need to find a way to compromise without starting a war.
Sarah doesn't look at Mason when she speaks.
She introduces herself as Crimson Ridge's head strategist. She says her name and the whole room goes silent. She says her name and Mason's entire body goes rigid again. She says her name and the mate bond screams inside her chest so loudly that she's amazed nobody else can hear it.
Mason knows.
After five years of telling himself that she's gone, Mason knows that his mate just walked into his pack house. Mason knows that the woman he rejected didn't die in the forest. Mason knows that she's alive and powerful and looking at him like he's a stranger.
Sarah begins discussing territorial boundaries like nothing is wrong.
She pulls out maps. She shows optimal resource distribution. She explains how both packs can expand without directly conflicting. She talks about trade agreements and neutral zones and strategic advantages. She speaks with complete confidence and complete control. She's a professional. She's a strategist. She's ice.
But her hands are shaking.
Mason can't focus on anything she's saying. Sarah can feel him staring at her. She can feel the mate bond pulling at him the same way it's pulling at her. She can feel him trying to understand how this is possible. How she's alive. How she's here. How she's become someone so powerful that her very presence commands the room.
Sarah doesn't look at him once.
She keeps her eyes on the maps. She keeps her voice steady. She keeps her body still even though everything inside her is screaming. She pretends to be professional while her entire soul is coming apart. She acts like seeing Mason again is just business.
It's the hardest thing she's ever done.
Victoria watches this entire exchange and finally understands everything. She understands why Sarah didn't want to come. She understands why Sarah's hands are shaking. She understands what the mate bond is. She understands that Sarah and Mason have history that goes deeper than pack politics.
Victoria interrupts the discussion and tells everyone that they should take a break. She tells them that they can reconvene in an hour for the next phase of negotiations. She tells them that it's important to rest between intense discussions.
Everyone agrees and starts standing up.
Sarah stands too and heads toward the door as quickly as she can without running. She needs to get away from the room. She needs to get away from Mason. She needs to get away from the mate bond that's pulling at her like it's trying to drag her across the floor toward him.
She makes it to the door when Mason speaks.
His voice sounds like he's been stabbed. His voice sounds broken and desperate and angry all at the same time. He says her name like it's a question. He says her name like he's asking if it's really her. He says her name and every cell in Sarah's body wants to turn around and run to him.
She doesn't turn around.
She keeps walking because turning around would be admitting that he still has power over her. Turning around would be admitting that five years of being apart didn't kill what she feels. Turning around would be admitting that the mate bond is alive and screaming and pulling her toward him with a force that her will can barely resist.
Sarah walks out of the room without looking back.
But she can feel Mason behind her. She can feel the mate bond trying to connect. She can feel him wanting to follow her. She can feel the weight of his presence like a physical thing that's chasing her down the hallway.
Sarah finds an empty room and closes the door and finally allows herself to fall apart.
Her hands are shaking so badly that she can barely grip the door handle. Her heart is racing so fast that she thinks it might explode. The mate bond is alive inside her chest and it's not dormant anymore. It's awake and screaming and demanding that she go back to him.
Sarah slides down the door until she's sitting on the floor.
She realizes something terrifying in that moment.
Five years of building power and coldness and distance didn't protect her. One look at Mason and she felt like that broken girl again. One moment and all her walls started cracking. One second of eye contact and the mate bond came roaring back like it never left.
Sarah thought she was strong enough.
Sarah thought she was untouchable.
Sarah thought she had moved on.
But the truth is standing in the other room right now. The truth is that some part of her has been waiting for this moment. Some part of her has been building all this power for exactly this reason. Some part of her knew that she was preparing for a reckoning with Mason Cole.
And now he knows that she's alive.
Now he knows that she didn't die in the forest.
Now he knows that his mate came back.
And Sarah has no idea what that means or what happens next or how she's going to survive standing in the same room with him again without breaking into pieces.
The mate bond is alive.
And nothing is ever going to be the same.
