The house was in its usual quietness when Vael stepped in. His nose twitched, catching the scent of Vessara from somewhere around the house. He made his way to the kitchen to find it empty. He opened the refrigerator, and it was fully stocked with food. He wondered if Vessara had already eaten dinner.
Vael grabbed a bottle of water and downed the whole contents at once. He tossed the container into the bin.
He had left work early but decided to visit his uncle, Elder Benjamin, to ask about the woman who had been picked to be his bride. His uncle remained stubborn and kept changing the topic at every opportunity. In the end, Vael gave up. Though Elder Benjamin assured him they would pick someone he would like this time. But Vael doubted if he would ever like whoever they picked. They had tried over the years, but nothing worked. On his way home, Vael got stuck in traffic for hours and didn't get home until past eight.
