Chapter 15 - The Return

The journey back through the Sunken City was different.

The walls were empty now no screaming faces, no trapped souls, just blank stone. The amber lights in the buildings had dimmed, and the air felt... lighter. Cleaner. As if the city itself was breathing easier.

"The Sleeper," Lee said. "What happened to it?"

The Pilgrim pointed to the center of the chamber, where Amaranth still stood but smaller now. Dimmer. The galaxies in its eyes had slowed, and its skin had faded from twilight to grey.

"You freed the souls I was feeding on," Amaranth said. "Without them, I'm... less. Weaker. I can't consume the world above anymore. Not for a long time, at least."

"So we won?" Kira asked.

Amaranth smiled a genuine smile, with no malice in it. "You won a battle, little one. But the war isn't over. The hunger is still inside me. It always will be. Eventually, I'll need to feed again. And when I do..."

"Then we'll be here," Lee said. "To stop you. Or to save you. Whatever it takes."

Amaranth studied him for a long moment. Then it bowed a deep, formal bow, like a king acknowledging an equal.

"You are remarkable, Lee Zaou," it said. "I hope you survive long enough to prove me wrong."

It faded, dissolving into the shadows of the chamber, returning to whatever dream had held it for three hundred years.

The Pilgrim let out a long breath. "It's over. We can go home."

"Not yet," Lee said. He turned to the shadows at the edge of the chamber. "Inyocha. I know you're there."

The shadows rippled. Inyocha stepped out, his red eyes burning, his face unreadable.

"You actually did it," he said. "You freed a million souls. You weakened the Sleeper. You saved the world." He shook his head. "I didn't think you had it in you."

"I had help," Lee said.

"Of course you did." Inyocha's voice was bitter. "You always have help. You always have friends. You always have people who care."

"You could have that too," Lee said. "Come with us. Leave this place. See the world above. Make friends. Find a family."

Inyocha laughed that broken, bitter sound. "I am the family, Lee. I'm the shadow to your light. The darkness to your dawn. We can't exist in the same world. Not really. Not for long."

"Then we'll learn," Lee said. "We'll figure it out. Together."

For a moment just a moment Inyocha's eyes softened. For a moment, he looked like the brother Lee had always wanted.

Then the moment passed.

"Maybe someday," Inyocha said. "But not today. Today, I have things to do. Power to gather. Strength to build." He stepped back into the shadows. "When the Sleeper wakes again and it will wake again I want to be ready. I want to be strong enough to matter."

"Inyocha "

"Goodbye, brother." The shadows swallowed him. "I'll see you at the end of the world."

He was gone.

Lee stood there for a long moment, staring at the place where his brother had vanished.

Then Kira put a hand on his shoulder. "Come on," she said softly. "Let's go home."

They left the Sunken City.

Behind them, the walls remained empty. The lights remained dim. The Sleeper remained dreaming.

And somewhere in the shadows, Inyocha Han began to plan.
