Chapter 61 - The Fortress Under Siege

They returned to find the fortress under attack.

Not by Malachar's army that had been destroyed. By something worse. A new general of the Hollow King, larger and more terrible than the first. It stood a mile from the walls, a towering figure of shadow and bone, with a hundred arms and a thousand eyes.

"The Second Blade," Ren said, his face pale. "The Hollow King is getting serious."

The fortress walls were cracked. The gates were splintered. Bodies littered the ground human and demon alike. The defenders were exhausted, wounded, on the verge of breaking.

But Lee raised the Dawnblade.

And the light exploded.

The Second Blade turned its thousand eyes toward the light. For a moment just a moment Lee saw something like fear in those eyes.

"The Light Bringer returns," the Second Blade rumbled. "With the Dawnblade. The Hollow King will be... pleased."

"I'm not here to please your master," Lee said. "I'm here to end him."

He leaped from the fortress walls, Dawnblade blazing, golden light streaming behind him like a comet's tail.

The Second Blade raised its hundred arms to block.

The Dawnblade cut through them like smoke.

The Second Blade screamed a sound that shook the earth and cracked the sky and fell, dissolving into shadow, retreating back to the darkness from which it came.

The defenders stared.

Then they cheered.

Lee landed in the center of the battlefield, Dawnblade in hand, breathing hard.

"That was..." Kira started.

"Stupid," Inyocha finished. "That was stupid. You could have died."

"But I didn't."

"This time."

Lee smiled. "That's all that matters."

He looked at the Dawnblade at the light that pulsed within it, the light that was now part of him.

"The Hollow King knows we have this now," Lee said. "He's going to come for us. All of him. Not just his generals."

"Then we'll be ready," Ren said.

"Will we?"

Ren was silent.

Lee looked at his friends at the family he had built, the bonds that had carried him through darkness after darkness.

"We have to be," Lee said. "Because if we're not..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't have to.
