The ground shook again at midnight.
This time it did not stop.
Kai woke with a jolt. The entire underground room was moving. Dust rained from the ceiling. People screamed.
Lira was already on her feet.
She grabbed Kai's arm and said "The big Quake is here. We have to get everyone out before the tunnels collapse!"
Mira was throwing cards left and right.
"Steady Ground Cards! Hold the ceiling! Everyone follow the glowing path!"
Kai felt the nine Echoes roar to life inside him.
He did not fight them. He used them.
He mixed stone skin and wind dash, becoming a fast, unbreakable blur.
He carried two children at once and shouted "Stay behind me! I will clear the way!"
The tunnels cracked loudly.
Rocks fell like rain. Kai punched through a collapsing wall with a rage-boosted stone fist, creating a new path.
Mira ran beside him, throwing card after card.
"Light Path Card! Healing Burst Card! Kai's Strength Card!"
Each explosion lit the dark tunnels and gave people a few seconds of safety.
She laughed even while running because she refused to let fear win.
Lira's silver threads formed a moving shield above the group.
She said "The exit is close! Keep moving!"
They burst out of the tunnels into the open camp just as the sky truly broke.
The biggest crack yet split the heavens wide open.
Purple-black light poured down like a waterfall. The ground split into deep chasms. Buildings collapsed.
Kai looked up and felt his heart stop.
Hundreds of new Echo signals exploded all around them. People were awakening in the streets. Some screamed in terror. Some glowed with raw power.
The temptation hit him like a hammer.
So many Echoes.
So much power.
Just waiting to be taken.
Nyxar whispered weakly, "Take them. Become the king you were meant to be."
Veyra added softly, "Steal them all. Become unstoppable."
Kai's hands shook.
His overlap risk jumped in his mind even without opening the status screen.
He gritted his teeth and shouted, "No! I will not take them!"
Lira heard him and sent her threads to wrap around his wrist like a lifeline.
She said "Stay with us, Kai. You are stronger than them."
Mira threw a bright card directly at Kai's chest.
It exploded with warm light and played his own normal laugh.
She yelled "Remember who you are! The gamer who hates heroes but became one anyway!"
Kai laughed despite the chaos.
The sound grounded him. The god fragments retreated again.
But the Quake was not finished.
A massive fissure opened in the center of the camp.
From the crack rose a giant shadow creature — bigger than anything they had seen before. It had dozens of eyes and tentacles made of pure Veil energy.
Elder Voss shouted "It is a Quake Beast! Born from the crack itself! It feeds on new awakenings!"
The beast roared.
Its roar made several newly awakened people collapse and their fresh Echoes float toward it.
Kai felt the pull stronger than ever.
Those Echoes were powerful. Fresh. Ready.
He took one step forward before he caught himself.
Mira saw it and threw her strongest card yet.
"Kai's Real Will Card!"
The card exploded in front of him with a burst of his own determination from the ritual.
Kai stopped.
He turned to his friends and said "We stop that thing. Together. No collecting."
Lira nodded and said "I will bind its legs."
Mira grinned and said "I will hit it with everything I have left!"
Kai dashed forward.
He mixed every Echo he trusted: shadow step, wind dash, stone skin, and fighter strength.
He became a living storm.
He punched the Quake Beast's side with everything he had.
The impact made the creature scream and stagger.
Mira threw card after card.
Each one exploded with different powers she had collected over the weeks. Fire. Wind. Chains. Light.
Lira's silver threads wrapped around the beast's tentacles and pulled them down, giving Kai openings.
The beast fought back hard.
Its tentacles slammed into the ground, creating new fissures. One tentacle nearly hit Mira, but Kai appeared in front of her and blocked it with his body.
The impact sent him flying, but he rolled and stood up again.
He shouted "Not my friends!"
The beast roared louder.
More new awakenings happened around the camp. More Echoes floated toward the creature.
Kai felt the hunger again.
Stronger this time.
But he looked at Lira and Mira fighting beside him and made his choice.
He charged one last time.
He merged shadow, wind, and stone into one powerful strike and punched straight into the beast's central eye.
The creature screamed.
Its body began to dissolve into black smoke.
Mira quickly touched the smoke and made a new card.
She held it up and shouted "Quake Beast Card! First edition!"
The beast fully dissolved.
The sky above them cracked one final time and then… went still.
The second wave had ended.
Kai dropped to his knees, breathing hard.
He felt exhausted but victorious.
Lira knelt beside him and said "You did it. You chose us. You chose yourself."
Mira hugged him from the other side and said "And I got the coolest card ever!"
Kai laughed weakly.
For a moment, everything felt right.
But as the dust settled, a new blue screen appeared only for him.

Mira grinned, but her eyes were serious.
"Then we will be ready."
Lira squeezed his hand and said "Together."
Kai stood up slowly.
The camp was damaged, but they were alive.
The final wave was coming.
And this time, the whole world would feel it.
