Chapter 171 - Yakushi Nonō's Offering! Sternly Rejected!

Chapter 171: Yakushi Nonō's Offering! Sternly Rejected!

The atmosphere in the Konoha Orphanage office became quiet, thick with unspoken thoughts. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the wooden floor, highlighting the motes of dust dancing in the air. It smelled of old books and clean linen.

Uchiha Akira sat calmly, observing the woman opposite him. He watched Yakushi Nonō's expression fluctuate—confusion, then suspicion, then a flicker of desperate hope, all warring for dominance behind her trained, placid mask.

He could guess what she was thinking. His actions were illogical to someone trained by Danzō. Such massive, unconditional support for an orphanage? It had to be a trick. A long-term plot.

But Akira did not explain.

Some things didn't need explanations, only actions. What Akira wanted was tangible results.

He wanted everyone in Konoha, from the lowest civilian to the highest clan head, to see what he had done. To see the new hospital, the funded orphanage, the secure borders, the thriving economy.

He wanted them to understand, without a shadow of a doubt, what kind of good, prosperous life they could lead by following him, Uchiha Akira.

This was his grand strategy. Not a covert plot, but an overt one. A scheme of genuine prosperity.

It was the most effective way to win the hearts and minds of the people, a method far more permanent than fear or coercion.

Just then, a soft, hesitant knock tapped on the office door.

"Come in," Yakushi Nonō said, her voice a little strained as she came back to her senses.

The door was pushed open just a crack, and Yakushi Kabuto carefully walked in, balancing a wooden tray. He kept his head bowed, his round glasses hiding his eyes.

"Hokage-sama, Nonō-sama, please have some tea." His voice was quiet, polite.

[Inorin's Note: The original text uses 'Mama' for Nonō. 'Nonō-sama' (Mother Nonō) is a respectful form. 'Mama' implies a closer, more familial term, which fits the orphanage setting, but '-sama' is more appropriate when addressing her in front of the Hokage.]

He placed two cups of steaming green tea in front of Akira and Nonō respectively. His movements were precise, economical, betraying a discipline beyond his years.

He then bowed and prepared to withdraw, to fade back into the background where he was comfortable.

"Wait," Uchiha Akira said.

The two simple words, spoken without force, carried the weight of a mountain.

Kabuto's entire body stiffened, his shoulders hiking up for a fraction of a second before he forced them down. He stopped, his back to the Hokage.

He turned around, but kept his head lowered, respectfully waiting for the Hokage's command.

Kabuto's heart was hammering against his ribs. This was the Godaime Hokage. The Uchiha who had, in a single day, overthrown the Sandaime's era. The man who was a living god, according to the rumors that terrified the village.

This was his first time speaking to a Hokage at such close range.

He could feel the pressure in the room, an ambient chakra that was as calm and deep as the ocean. Although it was just two simple words, it made him feel an immense, suffocating weight.

"What's your name?" Akira's voice rang out again, calm and curious.

"Hokage-sama, my name is Yakushi Kabuto," Kabuto replied respectfully, his voice perfectly even despite the storm in his chest.

"Look up."

Kabuto hesitated for a moment. To look a Kage in the eye was a sign of disrespect, or a challenge. But it was a direct order.

He slowly raised his head, his gray eyes finally meeting Uchiha Akira's dark, impassive gaze.

Akira looked at Kabuto, really looked at him. The silver hair, the glasses, the polite, unassuming mask that hid everything. Oh, yes. He knew this face.

This person, who had stirred up the entire Shinobi World in the original story—Orochimaru's right hand, a master spy, a perfect Sage, the catalyst for the Fourth Great War.

He was now just a teenager who grew up in an orphanage, appearing somewhat introverted and fundamentally insecure.

He's a good seed, Akira judged instantly in his heart. Intelligent, skilled, but malleable. An empty vessel, looking for someone to fill it, to give it purpose.

"You're very good," Uchiha Akira said indifferently. It wasn't loud praise, but a simple, factual statement.

Kabuto's pupils slightly constricted. His breath hitched.

Is... Hokage-sama... praising me?

He had been praised by Nonō for his chores, by his peers for his intelligence, even by Root agents on occasion. But that praise was always functional, a tool for manipulation.

This... this felt different. It was an assessment. A simple, unvarnished judgment from the most powerful man in the world.

"You may go," Akira waved his hand, dismissing him.

"...Yes."

Kabuto bowed low, turned, and left the office, closing the door with a soft, respectful click.

It wasn't until he was halfway down the hall that Kabuto let out a long, shaky breath. He leaned against the wall, realizing that his back was unknowingly drenched in cold sweat.

As Kabuto walked, Uchiha Akira's words kept replaying in his mind, a constant, echoing loop.

"You're very good..."

A strange, unfamiliar, joyful expression involuntarily appeared on Kabuto's face. It was the first genuine, unguarded smile he'd had in a very long time.

Back in the office, the silence returned, heavier this time.

Yakushi Nonō looked at Uchiha Akira, her gaze becoming even more complex, a storm of fear and calculation.

If Hokage-sama truly valued Kabuto... if he had seen Kabuto's potential...

Was this a blessing or a curse?

Her mind, trained by Root, immediately went to the darkest places. Danzō also "valued" potential. He collected it. He twisted it. He used it until it broke. Was Akira the same?

Yakushi Nonō's heart was filled with a familiar, cold worry. She and these children had no way out. They were trapped by this man's generosity.

Everything they had—their food, their shelter, their lives—was in Uchiha Akira's hands. He could give it, and he could take it away.

She could no longer passively await fate's judgment as before. She couldn't just hope for the best.

She had to do something. She had to act.

She had to secure a true, stable sanctuary for these children. She had to bind this powerful man to them, in a way that generosity alone could not guarantee.

Yakushi Nonō took a deep breath, her eyes hardening. The soft "mother" of the orphanage disappeared, replaced by the "Kunoichi Spy" of Root. Her gaze gradually became resolute.

She stood up, walked to the front of his desk, and bowed deeply.

"Hokage-sama, everything you have done for the orphanage, I... we... are unable to repay."

"I know that you must have your reasons for doing this. You are the Hokage. You don't do things without reason."

"I won't ask what your grand plan is, nor will I try to guess."

"I just want to tell you that from today onwards, I, Yakushi Nonō, and all the children in this orphanage, will be your most loyal subordinates. We are your tools."

"No matter what orders you give, no matter how dark or difficult, we will execute them without hesitation."

"Even... if it means our deaths."

Uchiha Akira listened quietly, his fingers steepled. He nodded with satisfaction. "I expect nothing less."

Yakushi Nonō paused. This was the moment of truth.

She then made a move that finally broke Uchiha Akira's placid expression, causing his eyebrows to raise in genuine surprise.

With trembling fingers, she reached for her collar. She unbuttoned the first button on her gray nun's robes.

Then, the second.

She had always worn these loose, shapeless robes. Few in Konoha knew what a mature, well-maintained, and voluptuous body was hidden beneath that simple, modest exterior.

As the buttons were unfastened one by one, a breathtaking expanse of pale white skin gradually appeared before Uchiha Akira.

The air in the office, once just quiet, instantly became charged and heavy. The only sound was the rustle of fabric and Nonō's own shaky breathing.

Yakushi Nonō's cheeks were so red they looked like they might drip blood. It was a flush of profound, agonizing shame.

Her body was trembling slightly, not from the cool air, but from self-disgust and a terrible, desperate nervousness.

She knew exactly what she was doing. She was a spy. She knew how this worked.

Her long, dark experience in Root had taught her a single, profound, and unbreakable truth: To gain something, one must pay a corresponding price.

Generosity was a lie. Kindness was a mask. Everything was a transaction.

She had nothing left to offer. She had no money, no political power, no secret jutsu.

The only thing remaining was this body, which was, she knew, still presentable. Still desirable.

If sacrificing her purity, her last shred of dignity, could secure a bright, unassailable future for over a hundred children...

If it could earn the true protection and investment of this god-like Hokage-sama...

Then... it would be more than worth it.

"Hokage-sama..."

Yakushi Nonō's voice trembled, threatening to break.

"I... I am still a virgin."

"Everything I have, I can offer to you. My body, my skills... everything."

"I only ask that you... you promise to treat those children well. To protect them."

After saying this, she seemed to have exhausted all her strength. She closed her eyes tightly, her lashes fluttering, and awaited her impending fate.

She was ready to accept whatever came next.

However... the expected violation did not come.

There was no sound of a chair scraping, no sudden movement, no change in breathing.

Yakushi Nonō waited for a long, agonizing moment. But there was no movement at all. Only silence.

She couldn't help it. She secretly opened a slit in one eye.

She saw Uchiha Akira, still leaning back in his chair, exactly as he had been.

His hands were still steepled. His dark eyes were on her, but they held no desire, no lust, no greed.

They held... nothing. Just a cold, flat, clinical observation.

"Put your clothes on."

Uchiha Akira finally spoke. His voice was not gentle. It was cold. It was a command.

Yakushi Nonō was stunned. Her mind, braced for one outcome, couldn't process this one.

What... what does he mean by this?

Could it be... he doesn't find me appealing?

A new, unprecedented, and even more potent sense of humiliation surged into Yakushi Nonō's heart. This was worse than being used. This was being rejected.

She believed that while her looks and figure might not compare to a peerless, legendary beauty like Lady Tsunade, they were certainly not bad.

She couldn't believe that any man could be indifferent to her in this state.

Unless...

"Hokage-sama... are you... despising me?" Yakushi Nonō bit her lip, her voice tinged with a new, genuine grievance. To be seen as so worthless that she couldn't even be used...

"You're overthinking it."

Uchiha Akira stood up. He didn't walk around the desk. He just... stood.

Yakushi Nonō instinctively took a step back, fumbling to pull the front of her robes together.

Akira looked down at her, not with anger, but with a profound, cold disappointment.

"I admit, you are beautiful. Objectively, you are."

"But I, Uchiha Akira, am not so base as to need to acquire your body in such a pathetic, transactional manner."

He scoffed, a quiet, sharp sound of contempt. "Do you think my will... my vision for this village... is so cheap that it can be bartered for with... this?"

"I support the orphanage because I believe these children are the future of Konoha. They are blank slates, and they deserve a better life than the one this village gave them before."

"This is my responsibility as Hokage, and it is my will. It is a strategic investment in the future."

"It has nothing to do with whether you offer your body or not. Your body has no value in this equation."

"I don't need you to flatter me, or bribe me, or seduce me in this way. That is the philosophy of a weak, paranoid, and desperate man." His words were a direct, sharp stab at Danzō.

"What I need," he said, his voice lowering but gaining intensity, "is for you to diligently help me manage this orphanage. I need you to use your intelligence, your skills, and your heart to nurture those children into capable, loyal, and strong individuals."

"That... that is the greatest repayment to me. Your results, Nonō. Not your body."

"Do you understand?"

Yakushi Nonō was utterly dumbfounded.

She stared blankly at Uchiha Akira, feeling as though the dark, cynical worldview she had built over twenty years of espionage, betrayal, and survival in Root was utterly shattered... and then forcibly reshaped, in that one, brief moment.

So... that's how it is?

Her entire life, she had been taught that people were tools. That loyalty was a weakness to be exploited. That everything was a manipulation. That a Kunoichi's body was just another weapon, to be used when jutsu failed.

Are there truly... superiors who genuinely consider the future of their subordinates? Who invest without demanding a dark, personal price?

She had always thought she had seen through the darkness of human nature. She believed she knew how the world worked.

But today, Uchiha Akira, the Uchiha Hokage, had taught her the most profound and devastating lesson of her life.

He didn't want her body. He wanted her mind. He wanted her skill. He wanted her loyalty, and he was willing to earn it, not coerce it.

"I... I..."

Yakushi Nonō's eyes, the eyes of a hardened spy, instantly reddened. The dam of twenty years of cynicism and suppressed pain broke.

Tears, hot and heavy, welled up and streamed down her face, washing away the shame of her offering, and replacing it with the shame of her assumption.

She quickly, frantically, began to re-button her robes, her hands shaking so badly she could barely manage the small buttons.
