Chapter 328 - Awakening and Remorse

Chapter 328: Awakening and Remorse

At the epicenter of the sprawling sea of sand, Naruto lay motionless. The violent, bubbling shroud of red chakra that had previously engulfed him was completely gone, leaving only the quiet rise and fall of his chest. His usual appearance had returned, though his clothes were scorched and torn into jagged rags. He had slipped into a deep, exhausted coma.

"Naruto-kun!"

Hinata's voice broke the heavy silence, laced with raw panic. She didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second, sprinting across the uneven dunes. Dropping to her knees beside him, she ignored the coarse sand scraping her skin. She leaned in close, her pale eyes scanning his battered form. Seeing the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest, the suffocating knot in her throat finally loosened. She let out a shaky breath.

A short distance away, the howling winds began to settle. Temari hurried to Gaara's side, wrapping an arm around his shoulders to haul him up from the pulverized earth.

"Gaara, how are you holding up?" she asked, her tone tight with concern.

"I am fine," Gaara replied softly, shaking his head.

Despite his words, his complexion was a sickly, ashen pale, and his breaths came in shallow, erratic gasps. Suppressing the rampaging Jinchuriki had pushed him to his absolute limits. He had drained nearly every last drop of chakra in his reserves to weave that massive sea of sand, and now, a crushing wave of lethargy threatened to drag him back down.

Temari supported his weight, her gaze drifting toward the unconscious blonde boy in the distance. Her expression twisted into a complicated knot of awe and dread.

That power... she thought, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of her neck. It had been pure, unadulterated brutality—a suffocating miasma fueled by an endless desire to annihilate everything in its path. It felt sickeningly familiar to the sinister aura of Shukaku that had plagued Gaara for years.

No, she corrected herself, her grip on her brother tightening. It was worse. Far more terrifying than Shukaku.

"Is this truly... the power of the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki?" Temari murmured, unable to keep the slight tremor from her voice.

The lingering fear clung to her bones. He had only manifested three tails, yet the sheer devastation he wrought was apocalyptic. If the seal were to completely break... if the full Nine-Tails were unleashed... Temari swallowed hard, refusing to let her mind wander down that nightmarish path.

A sudden, pained groan broke her train of thought.

On the ground, Naruto shifted. His brow furrowed in agony as his eyelids fluttered, fighting against the heavy weight of exhaustion. Slowly, he peeled his eyes open. The world above him was a blurry smudge of colors before sharpening into focus. The first thing that entered his vision was Hinata's face hovering above him, her pale eyes swimming with unshed tears and overwhelming concern.

"Hinata...?" Naruto rasped, his throat feeling as though it had been scoured with coarse grit.

"Naruto-kun! You're awake! Thank goodness..." Hinata choked out, a watery smile breaking across her face. The dam finally broke, and tears of sheer relief spilled over her lashes, tracking hot paths down her dust-streaked cheeks.

"I... what happened to me?" Naruto grunted, planting a hand in the sand as he struggled to sit up. A sharp hiss escaped his lips. Every single bone in his body screamed in protest, feeling as though they had been shattered and haphazardly glued back together.

"Don't move, Naruto-kun! Please!" Hinata urged, quickly sliding her arms behind his back to support his weight. "You just... just now, you..."

She didn't need to finish. Naruto shook his groggy head, and the fragmented memories of the past hour violently crashed into his consciousness like a tidal wave.

He remembered meditating. He remembered entering the desolate sealing space and arrogantly demanding chakra from the Nine-Tails. And then... Then, there was only a suffocating sea of blood-red. An endless, bottomless abyss of killing intent and pure, destructive urges had instantly swallowed his reason whole, drowning him in a tempest of malice.

The color drained from Naruto's face. His expression hardened into a mask of grim realization.

He turned his head, his blue eyes landing on Gaara's sickly pale complexion, and then on Temari, who was still eyeing him with guarded wariness. Beyond them lay the training ground—or what was left of it. Hideous, jagged ravines had been gouged deep into the earth, the terrain violently warped and scarred by an immense, catastrophic force. The devastation was absolute.

"I... I rampaged?" Naruto muttered, his voice barely a whisper as the horrifying truth settled in his gut.

Temari, supporting Gaara's weight, slowly walked over. She shot him a sharp, exasperated glare. "More than just rampaging!" she snapped, though there was no real venom in her tone. "You nearly tore all three of us limb from limb just now!"

"I'm sorry!" Naruto flinched, abruptly bowing his head. His fists clenched tightly against his thighs, his voice thick with heavy remorse and bitter self-reproach. "I'm really... so sorry! I was an idiot. I was too reckless! With my teacher not around to watch over me, I actually thought I could..."

A cold shudder racked his spine. The lingering fear gnawed at his insides. If it hadn't been for Gaara and the others risking their lives in a desperate bid to suppress him, the consequences would have been catastrophic. He could have killed them. He could have killed Hinata.

Gaara looked down at the trembling blonde boy.

"There is no need to apologize," the Kazekage said quietly, his voice carrying a deep, weary empathy. "This feeling... I understand it better than anyone."

He knew it intimately. The agonizing pain and suffocating loneliness of being utterly dominated by the monster lurking inside one's own soul. The terror of losing all reason, reduced to nothing but a vessel for blind, destructive instinct. Gaara had lived that nightmare for years.

Naruto lifted his head, his eyes shining with unshed emotion. "Thank you. All of you."

Thank you for not giving up on me when I turned into a monster. Thank you for risking everything to pull me back from the brink.

A heavy silence settled over the ruined landscape. Naruto took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing the trembling in his hands to stop. When he looked up again, the guilt in his azure eyes had been replaced by a sharp, burning resolve.

He couldn't just let this go. That damn fox had done this on purpose.

He said he'd only give me a little chakra as 'rent', but the bastard flooded my system and nearly made me explode! "I have a score to settle with him," Naruto muttered, his jaw locking.

He looked at his battered friends. "You guys rest for a bit. I... I have something I need to take care of."

Without waiting for a response, Naruto forced his aching body into a cross-legged meditative posture. He ignored Hinata's worried gasp, closed his eyes, and let his consciousness sink deep into the abyss of his own mind.

The familiar, damp darkness of the subterranean passage materialized around him. The air was thick, smelling of stagnant water and ancient malice. Naruto's face was a mask of grim fury. Shoving his hands deep into his pockets, he strode aggressively down the flooded corridor, his footsteps echoing loudly against the stone walls.

Within moments, the towering, imposing iron bars of the seal loomed before him.

Behind the massive gate, the colossal beast lay sprawled across the flooded floor. It was feigning sleep, its nine mountainous tails swaying lazily in the shadows behind it, churning the shallow water.

"Hey! You stinky fox!" Naruto planted his feet squarely in front of the bars and roared, his voice echoing fiercely through the cavernous space. "Get up!"

One of the Nine-Tails' massive ears twitched, but the beast otherwise remained motionless.

"Don't play dead with me!" Naruto shouted, gripping one of the iron bars. "You did that on purpose just now, didn't you?! You call that a 'little bit' of chakra?! You clearly wanted to use the opportunity to hijack my body and turn me into a mindless monster!"

Finally, the great beast stirred.

Slowly, the Nine-Tails peeled open its massive, slit-pupiled eyes. The crimson irises glowed in the dark, radiating an aura of undisguised contempt and cruel mockery. When it spoke, its deep, rumbling voice vibrated through the very foundations of the mindscape, heavy with oppressive malice.

"Well, well. If it isn't the arrogant brat who came to collect his 'rent'." The fox's lips curled into a sinister grin, exposing rows of jagged, dagger-like teeth. "What? Have you already spent it all so quickly?"

"You—!" Naruto choked, his face flushing with sheer outrage at the demon's shameless audacity. He jabbed an accusatory finger through the bars. "Wipe that smirk off your face! Answer my question! Did you do it on purpose?!"

A terrifying, suffocating wave of killing intent violently erupted from behind the iron gate, slamming into Naruto like a physical wall. The water around his ankles frothed and boiled.

The Nine-Tails slowly raised its colossal head, its crimson eyes locking onto the tiny human before it.

"Kid, you seem to have fundamentally misunderstood something," the fox rumbled, its voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal octave. "From the very beginning, it was you who came crying and shouting to this Lord, begging for power. And it was you who shamelessly demanded to collect 'rent'."

The beast leaned closer to the bars, its massive face filling Naruto's vision. The mocking smile widened. "This Lord merely granted your foolish wish."

"I..." Naruto's breath hitched.

He was momentarily rendered entirely speechless. The anger drained from him, replaced by a cold knot of realization. He couldn't refute a single word. He had been the one to arrogantly seek out the demon's power.

"But... but you gave me way too much!" Naruto argued forcefully, though his voice lacked its previous bite. "I couldn't control it at all!"

The Nine-Tails let out a low, rumbling sneer that shook the cavern walls. It was a dark, grating sound, as if the beast had just heard the most pathetic joke in the world.

"Control?" the fox mocked, the word dripping with venom. "Does a mere, insignificant brat like you even deserve to speak the word 'control'?"

The Nine-Tails slowly pushed itself up onto its massive paws. As it stood to its full, towering height, an unmatched sense of oppression crushed down on the space. The entire sealing chamber trembled violently, the water sloshing wildly against the stone walls.

"What exactly do you think this Lord's power is?" the demon snarled, its tails thrashing the air. "Do you think it is some cheap toy you can just take whenever you please?"

"This Lord's power is absolute destruction! It is raw, unadulterated hatred! It is the purest, most concentrated collection of malice in this entire world!" The fox's roar deafened Naruto, the sheer force of its voice sending ripples across the flooded floor. "To wield it, you must be prepared to be utterly consumed by it!"

"You are weak! So pathetically weak that your fragile vessel lacks the capacity to withstand even a single shred of my true power!" The Nine-Tails glared down at him, its crimson eyes burning like twin suns in the dark. "Cease your ridiculous, whining complaints, kid. You want my power? Fine."

"Then exchange it with your reason! Trade it for your soul! Surrender your everything!" The beast's fangs gleamed menacingly in the dim light. "If you do not even possess that much resolve..."

The Nine-Tails sneered, turning its massive head away in absolute disgust.

"Then get out of my sight obediently, and do not ever bother this Lord again!"
