Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Super Saiyan

On a planet not far from Planet Metamor.

Vegeta had been kicked out of the deep crater, and Gran followed, hovering just above the surface. While the prince lay prone on the ground, Gran stood a short distance away, clearly preparing for something momentous.

"Lord Supreme Kai, what is this 'Super Saiyan' that the Candidate is talking about?" Kibito asked. Even from a great distance, his divine senses allowed him to overhear the conversation between Gran and Vegeta clearly.

"How should I know?" Supreme Kai Shin shot him a look. He had only just discovered that Gran was a Saiyan; he certainly didn't know about any secret Saiyan transformations! "But I have a premonition... I feel that Gran is about to become something incredibly terrifying."

Shin's tone grew solemn. "Just watch." Kibito swallowed hard, his nerves beginning to fray.

On the other side, Raditz and Nappa watched Gran's movements with confusion. Despite their curiosity, they didn't dare draw any closer. The fighting had ceased, and the battlefield fell into an eerie silence. A light breeze blew, shifting dust and pebbles across the cracked earth, making it seem as though the conflict was over.

However, the atmosphere remained heavy—the oppressive "calm before the storm."

Gran stood ten meters away from Vegeta, silent and focused. Vegeta, unable to move, stared up from the dirt, already anticipating Gran's next move. Is there truly such a thing as a Super Saiyan? Can he actually pull it off? Vegeta didn't know if the legend was true, but his royal pride made it impossible to accept another Saiyan reaching that peak first.

"No... impossible! Even if it's real, only I should be the one! Gran, you bastard, stop it!" Vegeta's eyes were bloodshot as he slammed his small fist into the ground in frustration.

"Watch closely," Gran said, his expression turning deadly serious. "Watch as I shatter the last of your convictions."

Gran knew that transforming into a Super Saiyan required three conditions:

A sufficient amount of S-cells within the body.

A base power level of approximately 3 million.

 A trigger of extreme rage.

Gran's base power was currently one billion, and he could summon rage at a moment's notice. As for the S-cells, lore dictated they flourished in those with a gentle spirit or in "peaceful times." Gran wasn't entirely sure what that meant, but he suspected it was linked to one's state of mind.

Goku had built his foundation through mental training at the Lookout as a child. Vegeta's transformation was even more telling; once consumed by malice and ego, his pride was utterly crushed on Namek and during his early time on Earth. That shift in his mental state allowed his S-cells to proliferate, eventually leading to his breakthrough in space.

My state of mind reached the 'Semi-State of No-Self' two years ago, Gran thought confidently. After two more years of refinement, my S-cells must be more than ready.

Silence. The battlefield became terrifyingly still. Little Gran clenched his fists and dropped into a low stance. Now, he just needed the spark of rage.

"Time to get angry!!"

Gran closed his eyes, and a specific memory flashed through his mind: A year ago, in the purple-hued world of the God of Destruction, a young, round-faced boy was being spanked by a purple cat. It had happened right after he emerged from the virtual world—Beerus had given him a senseless thrashing, and to make it worse, the god had targeted his backside!

"AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!" "LORD BEERUS!!!!!" "HOW DARE YOU SPANK ME! UNFORGIVABLE!!!!!"

The memory worked instantly. Gran plunged into a state of absolute, white-hot rage.

BOOM—!

The power of extreme rage surged like a flood, converging at the centre of his back. With rage as the spark and S-cells as the fuel, the explosion was instantaneous.

BOOM—!

Gran's power began to skyrocket! 1 billion... 2 billion... 5 billion... 10 billion!

The earth shook, the oceans roared, and the very planet trembled under the strain.

"WHAT?!!" Vegeta felt it first. He felt as though his very soul was shivering. "What is this power?! It's terrifying! Is this... is this the legendary Super Saiyan state? Dammit! Why isn't it me?! I am the Prince!!!"

Nearby, Kibito's face turned ashen. "What has the Candidate done? Is this the transformation he spoke of?"

Unlike Kibito, Supreme Kai Shin wasn't afraid. Instead, he was exhilarated. He clenched his fists and shouted, "Show me! Show me what this 'Super Saiyan' looks like!!"

Further away, Raditz and Nappa had already retreated over ten kilometres. "Nappa, what is he doing? Why is his power suddenly so monstrous?" Little Raditz clung to Nappa's leg. "Was he... was he not even using his full strength before?"

"How should I know?!" Nappa wanted to kick the annoying brat away, but his eyes were glued to the horizon. "All I know is that Vegeta is dead meat." Just then, an even greater pressure descended, pinning both of them to the ground.

Back at the epicentre, Gran's aura flickered—white, then gold, then white again.

BOOM—!

Accompanied by the rolling sound of thunder, Gran's hair began to flash between black and gold. His power continued to climb. 10 billion... 20 billion... 40 billion...

Finally... BOOM—! 50 Billion!

At that moment, the world lost all colour, eclipsed by the brilliant golden light radiating from Gran.

He had done it. Super Saiyan!

Across the universe, those sensitive to Ki reacted instantly. At the Lookout on Earth, Mr Popo looked up. "How interesting," he murmured. On a small island, Master Roshi swallowed hard. "This Ki is insane. To think such a powerhouse exists in the universe!" On King Kai's planet, King Kai was mopping sweat from his brow. "How strong has this Candidate become? The afterlife itself is shaking from this pressure!" And at the Galactic Prison, Merus smiled faintly. "Whis's disciple is quite impressive."

BOOM—!

Gales howled, and lightning struck the trembling earth. The small, one-meter-tall Gran stood enveloped in a golden flame.

"G... Golden hair!" Vegeta, who had been blown a kilometre away by the shockwave, stared in shock. "So... that's the Super Saiyan state..." He couldn't take any more; his consciousness faded, and he slipped into a coma.

"Hahaha! So this is the power of a God of Destruction Candidate? This is incredibly hype!" Supreme Kai Shin shouted, though his face was pale from the strain of resisting the pressure.

"Lord Supreme Kai, stop being 'hyped'! I can't hold on much longer!" Kibito didn't wait for an answer; he grabbed Shin and bolted.

Lightning rained from the sky as Gran felt the boundless power within him. Just as I thought, I really can do it. He clenched his fist, and the space around him vibrated. According to the lore, the Super Saiyan transformation multiplied base power by 50. At 50 billion, he was a force of nature.

"Hahaha! Vegeta, did you see that? Isn't it cool? Aren't you jealous?" Golden-haired Gran laughed toward the heavens.

...But there was no answer—only the sound of thunder.

"Wait, where did everyone go?" Gran blinked and looked around. The area was a total mess of scorched earth and rubble. Shin and Kibito were gone, and Vegeta was unconscious a kilometre away.

Gran felt a bit deflated. No one saw me? What's the point of flexing if nobody is watching? He sensed Vegeta's location. Hmph, trying to escape my mockery by passing out? It won't be that easy!

He prepared to use Instant Transmission to close the gap.

Suddenly, a divine pressure descended. A streak of rainbow light fell from the stars.

Whis and Beerus had arrived.

The moment Beerus landed and saw Gran's golden hair, his body staggered. We... we were too late!!!

Despair filled Beerus's face. He turned to Whis and roared, "I told you to hurry up! Look at him! He's already transformed!!"

Whis remained silent, his expression filled with deep self-reproach. According to his father, the Great Minister, the state the ancestor Otis had achieved was completely wrong—a path to ruin. Gran was so talented; why had he followed that path?

"You..." Beerus saw Whis's guilt and sighed, unable to stay angry.

"According to my father," Whis whispered, "once he enters that extreme berserk state, he will lose his mind completely, and his power will rise uncontrollably. Every second he maintains it puts a fatal burden on his body. Lord Beerus, please... knock him unconscious. We'll figure the rest out back home."

"Fine," Beerus muttered. The two of them began discussing how best to take him down as if he weren't even there.

"Hey!"

The small, golden-haired Gran finally spoke up. He figured if he didn't say something soon, Beerus was actually going to hit him. He knew he was 50 times stronger now, but he wasn't delusional enough to think he could take on the strongest God of Destruction.

Whis and Beerus froze. Their eyes widened in total shock.

Hasn't he lost his mind? Can he still talk?

Beerus pointed a trembling finger at Gran and looked at Whis. "You said when they turn into that green-haired state, they..."

Wait.

Beerus squinted. "His hair is gold. Whis, didn't you say the berserk state had grass-green hair?"

"I... I don't know! That's just what my father told me!" Whis stared at Gran's hair, completely baffled.

"Lord Beerus, Whis... are you talking about the 'Legendary Super Saiyan' state?" Gran asked as he walked toward them.

As he approached, the two gods didn't attack. Instead, they began poking and prodding him like grandfathers examining a grandchild.

"Ow! Hey! What are you doing?!" Gran jumped back, fixing his messy golden hair.

"You haven't lost your mind? Can you speak normally?" Beerus asked, firing off questions like a machine gun. "And what's with the hair? Why isn't it green? And what is this 'Legendary' version you just mentioned?"

Whis was equally inquisitive, their voices buzzing in Gran's ears until he felt like his head would explode.

"STOP!!!" Gran made a T-sign with his hands. "First, tell me—how do you two know about the green-haired transformation?"
