Chapter 10 - The Conductor of Agony

The Radiant Chains weren't just physical restraints; they were spiritual leeches. Every time Kaelen struggled, the glowing links pulsed, drawing out his dark energy and replacing it with searing, holy light. It felt like pouring molten silver into an open wound.

High Inquisitor Malphas stepped forward, the gold thread in his eyelids shimmering. "You are a fascinating specimen, Kaelen. Most 'Dregs' simply turn to ash. You... you absorb the light and try to rot it. But a cup cannot hold the ocean."

Malphas raised the white-hot branding iron. It wasn't shaped like a symbol; it was a jagged spike of pure solar energy. "This is the Mark of Absolute Silence. Once I press this to your brow, your memories, your hatred, and your voice will vanish. You will become a hollow shell, a perfect servant of the Twelve."

Kaelen's spectral form began to flicker. The violet fire in his eyes dimmed to a dull ember. Through the haze of pain, he saw the faces of the prisoners chained to the floor. They weren't cheering for him. They were watching with hollow, hopeless eyes, waiting for the inevitable.

"Is this it?" a voice whispered in the back of Kaelen's mind. It wasn't the System. It was his own human voice, the one that had been stepped on for years. "Are you just going to be a battery for them again?"

"No," Kaelen wheezed.

His claws scraped against the marble, leaving black scorch marks. He stopped fighting the chains. Instead, he did the opposite. He opened his Heart of the Void completely.

"You said a cup cannot hold the ocean," Kaelen rasped, his voice vibrating with a terrifying frequency. "But I'm not a cup anymore. I'm a drain."

Instead of resisting the holy energy, Kaelen pulled it in. He sucked the light from the Radiant Chains, the glowing stones in the walls, and the very air of the sanctum. But he didn't try to store it. He used his body as a lightning rod, channeling the purity through his hatred and spitting it back out as Void-Fire.

The chains turned black and shattered.

The High Inquisitor recoiled, his stitched eyes twitching. "Impossible! No mortal soul can bridge the gap between Light and Malice!"

"I'm not a mortal," Kaelen said, standing up. He was no longer just a shadow; he was a vortex. "And I'm not a hero. I'm the consequence."

Kaelen lunged. Malphas swung the branding iron, but Kaelen caught the white-hot metal with his bare hand. The sound of sizzling spirit filled the hall, but Kaelen didn't flinch. He used the Inquisitor's own weapon to deliver the strike.

The dark whip coiled around Malphas, infused with the stolen holy light. The two opposing energies fought inside the Inquisitor's body, creating a series of internal explosions that tore through his crimson robes.

"Tell me, Inquisitor," Kaelen whispered, leaning into the man's face. "Does it still feel like 'peace'?"

With a final surge, Kaelen ripped the Second Key from Malphas's neck. The golden chain snapped, and the Inquisitor's body slumped to the floor, his stitched eyes finally tearing open to reveal nothing but empty, charred sockets.

The giant statue of Solaris behind the throne began to crack. The "tears" turned to black sludge. As the holy light faded, the prisoners' chains fell away.

Kaelen stood in the center of the darkening cathedral, holding the second key. He felt cold—colder than he had ever been. His evolution was progressing, but he was losing the ability to feel anything other than the drive to move upward.

"Two down," Kaelen muttered, his eyes fixated on the ceiling. "Eighteen stratums to go."

The prisoners began to stir, looking at Kaelen with a mix of awe and terror. One young Orc boy stepped forward, reaching out a trembling hand. "Are... are you our Savior?"

Kaelen didn't even look back as he walked toward the exit.

"No," he said. "I'm just the one who's going to burn the house down while you're inside."

He vanished into the shadows, leaving the "Dregs" in a city that was finally, truly silent.
