Chapter 5 - The Sands

Magnus awoke in a lightless place strapped to a chair, it was disorientating, unstrapping himself he turned on the emergency lights and frowned.

"Something jammed the exit door"

Giving the walls a few short kicks Magnus sighed and pulled out the handgun and blasted at the reinforced walls until he made a gap large enough for him to crawl out of.

Clambering out of the half melted pod he looked around, a sense of awe permeated him as he took in his surroundings.

Around him was an endless sea of bone white sand, obsidian coloured spears of jagged rock stabbed their way through the pale desert reaching for the lightless void, it was like endless waves of milky white were crashing against the looming mountains of nothingness. Above it all in the starless sky hung a lone sun burning with black and gold flames casting an eerie glow on an unmoving landscape.

Tearing his gaze away from the ominous star he let out a half crazed laugh.

"He really wasn't lying, the air here is completely breathable, it's a whole new universe!"

He did not stop laughing for a long time, his cloudy grey eyes still flashing with disbelief.

It had never understood why things rejected being consumed so much, was that not the inevitable cycle? to eat and to be eaten, even if you survived another's jaws decay would still find you with its all but unavoidable grasp.

Decay was so much more horrific for it than the prospect of being defeated knowing its death would provide its victor with boundless strength.

Shaking its countless heads it snapped from its thoughts, how curious, its thoughts seemed to be increasing the constant drive of hunger fading ever so slowly since it had begun finding those strange apes.

It looked at the strange clothed creature lying before its countless bodies trying to see if the ape had calmed down, it had not, it made a shrill sound and once again raised the strange silver stick and expelled the dangerous light from it hitting one of his bodies killing it instantly.

Without the faintest sense of anger its now dead body was quickly devoured by its other bodies seeing that the ape once again began screaming until finally it was fully consumed.

This was yet another one of those strange ape things it had and curiously it somehow felt itself growing in some unseen way the more of these creatures it consumed the hunger receded once more.

These creatures were valuable, somehow it could feel this fact, the fact that these seemingly weak animals were providing it something no other creature in this place could.

With a renewed sense of determination it set out in hopes of finding more of the strange apes.

Magnus now having calmed down planted a beacon into the sand besides the half melted pod, and then he set off an enthusiastic expression plastered across his soft features as he walked across the empty landscape, occasionally Magnus would use the grapples to ascend one of the void like monoliths of stone for a better view of the surrounding landscape, he saw nothing but more of the pale desert stretching in every direction.

While the unending desert looked quite fearful and lonely it held a unique charm with the dim sun making it look as if shrouded by a perpetual twilight, taking a small notebook and pen Magnus started sketching the awe inspiring view before him trying to record the pure scale of the immenseness before him, looking back up from his notebook he wore a satisfied expression, how long had it been since he could have fun drawing something? Not since he was taught by...

Magnus's expression went blank for a few seconds before putting away the notebook and a morbid grin crept onto his face.

There was no use thinking about other people, who really cared about others? He certainly didn't, It was enough for him to be in this wondrous place, a whole new reality! What were people next to his opportunity to see this place?

Yes he didn't need anyone..., making sure that he enjoyed his own life... that would be enough.

Slowly he began to descend from the top of the black mountain, admiring the barely glowing star above his head as he did.

He supposed it was about time he stopped slacking around, bending down he took a sample of the sand and put it into his pouch.

"Well, I suppose I might as well go look around for the actual life we've been sent here to find..."

And so he searched, around the jagged stone emerging from the ground, the tiny cracks and nooks in the surrounding stone, he dug around in the pale sand building a miniature castle with the now displaced sand, however this was to no avail the place seemed absolutely lifeless not even the smallest scraps of any sign of life could be found.

Walking aimlessly in the vast yet empty space Magnus took in the landscape and continued to do so until the black and gold sun set leaving a desolate sky without a single star, the darkness set like a thick haze across the landscape, it was an absolute darkness without even the faintest glimmer of light.

It was a strange feeling, sitting in complete darkness alone, not being able to see anything but the sand beneath your skin.

Firing a few short blasts at the ground Magnus sat down, the illumination of the melting sand casting his surroundings in its dim glow.

Laying down Magnus stared at the void above the knowledge that he was somewhere no human had ever stepped foot on still a constant ring in the back of his mind, how truly incredible it was that he was born in time for the chance to explore whole new realities, rolling around in the dusty sand Magnus drifted off, his once alert eyes dulling slowly as the quiet crackles of the melting sand sung its rough lullaby

What a glorious day.
