Chapter 3 - 003: The World That Left Him Behind

The dungeon exit never looked this far before.

Kai walked slowly, each step echoing faintly through the cracked stone corridor. The deeper parts of the dungeon were quieter now—too quiet. The kind of silence that only came after something powerful had been killed.

Or something had changed.

His grip on the dagger loosened slightly as he exhaled.

"…I'm still alive."

He said it again, like he needed to hear it to believe it.

Just a few minutes ago—no, it felt like a lifetime—he had been lying on that floor, ribs shattered, lungs failing, waiting for death.

Now…

His body still hurt.

But it wasn't the same.

The pain was there, yes—dull, lingering—but underneath it was something else.

Strength.

Not overwhelming.

Not enough to call himself powerful.

But enough to know—

He wasn't the same Rank F hunter who walked in here.

A faint flicker appeared in his vision again.

[Status Panel Available]

Kai stopped walking.

"…Status?"

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then, as if responding to his thoughts, a translucent interface unfolded in front of him.

[Name: Kai Voss]

[Rank: F]

[Condition: Injured]

[Evolution Points: 4]

[Skills:]

– Weak Point Detection (Lv.1)

Kai stared at it.

"…That's it?"

No flashy stats.

No overwhelming power.

Just… something simple.

Real.

He frowned slightly.

"Evolution points… what do you even do?"

No answer.

The system remained silent.

"…Of course."

Not everything was going to be explained.

He would have to figure it out himself.

That thought should have been frustrating.

Instead—

It excited him.

A little.

Kai dismissed the panel with a small motion, though he wasn't sure how he did it. The screen faded instantly.

"…Guess I'll learn as I go."

His eyes shifted forward again.

The exit.

A faint glow in the distance.

Closer now.

But something felt off.

Very off.

Kai slowed his steps.

The air near the exit wasn't stable.

It shimmered—like heat rising from asphalt—but heavier.

Darker.

"…That wasn't there before."

Every dungeon had an entrance and exit gate.

Stable.

Predictable.

This—

Was neither.

A low hum vibrated through the corridor.

Deep.

Unsettling.

Kai's instincts tightened.

"Don't tell me…"

He took a careful step forward.

Then another.

The closer he got, the stronger the pressure became, pressing lightly against his skin.

Not enough to harm him.

But enough to warn him.

Something had changed in this dungeon.

Something was still changing.

A sudden noise echoed from ahead.

Voices.

Human voices.

"…Someone's alive in there!"

"Hurry up, the gate's fluctuating!"

Kai's eyes sharpened.

Rescue team?

No.

Too fast.

Too coincidental.

He moved forward cautiously, stopping just before the exit's opening.

Through the shimmering distortion, he could see silhouettes.

Hunters.

Three of them.

Standing outside the gate.

"…They came back?" he muttered.

For a second—

A memory flashed.

The shove.

The footsteps leaving him behind.

The silence.

Kai's expression didn't change.

But something inside him did.

He stepped forward.

The moment his figure appeared through the gate—

Everything froze.

"…Wait—"

"…That's—"

"…Kai?"

The three hunters outside stared at him like they had just seen a ghost.

One of them stepped back.

"Impossible… you were—"

"Dead?" Kai finished calmly, stepping fully out of the gate.

The air outside felt different.

Cleaner.

But also heavier in a different way.

Eyes.

All on him.

"…You left me to die," he said, not accusing.

Just stating a fact.

The hunters exchanged glances.

Uneasy.

Guilty.

But not enough.

"Look, we didn't have a choice," one of them said quickly. "That thing would've killed all of us—"

"So you chose me."

Silence.

Kai tilted his head slightly.

"…Fair."

The response caught them off guard.

No anger.

No shouting.

Just… acceptance.

And somehow, that made it worse.

"Wait—if you're here… then what happened to the monster?" another asked.

Kai didn't answer immediately.

He glanced back at the dungeon gate.

It pulsed once.

Unnaturally.

"…It's dead."

The words dropped quietly.

But the effect—

Immediate.

"What?"

"That's impossible!"

"You? Don't joke—"

The ground trembled.

All four of them froze.

The dungeon gate behind Kai distorted violently, the shimmering surface twisting into something unstable.

The hum from earlier returned—

Louder.

Deeper.

More dangerous.

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"…That's new."

A sharp crack split through the air.

The gate flickered—

Once.

Twice.

Then—

It tore open.

BOOOOOM!!!

A wave of energy burst outward, sending all of them stumbling back.

From within the gate—

Something moved.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And then—

A claw emerged.

Larger than the one before.

Darker.

Covered in jagged armor-like scales.

"…No way…" one of the hunters whispered.

The air grew heavy.

Crushing.

Even breathing became difficult.

Kai felt it too.

That pressure.

That presence.

Stronger than anything he had faced before.

His grip tightened around his dagger.

Behind him, the hunters panicked.

"R-run!"

"This is a high-rank breach!"

"We're dead!"

Kai didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on the gate.

On the thing trying to come through.

And then—

The system flickered again.

[Warning]

[High-Level Entity Detected]

[Survival Probability: Extremely Low]

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

That sounded about right.

The claw pushed further through the gate.

Cracks spread along the edges of the portal.

Whatever was coming—

It wasn't supposed to be here.

Not yet.

Kai's eyes sharpened.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just that same cold focus.

[Condition Updated]

[Extreme Survival Scenario Detected]

A faint smile touched his lips.

Small.

Barely there.

"…So this is how it works."

Behind him, the hunters had already started running.

Abandoning the scene.

Again.

Kai didn't look back.

He stepped forward instead.

Toward the breaking gate.

Toward the unknown.

"…Let's see if I can survive this too."
