Chapter 1 - 1 The Birth of Vigil

In Wyoming, a man by the name of Vincent Noir quietly walked the mountains in the dark of the night. His footsteps were silent, similar to a tiger stalking its prey. His trench coat flowed in the wind as his left hand rested on the hilt of his katana. His silence was interrupted by the sound of glass breaking in the distance. Vincent let out a soft hum as he vanished from his spot on the mountain.

Inside a bank, a woman dressed in a skintight black leather suit with crimson red lining flowing across her upper back and around her chest area, as well as a black domino mask that only covered her eyes and the area around them. Her deep brown hair flowed down her shoulders and down to just above the middle of her back as her light blue eyes reflected off the glass she stood before.

She raised her hand and a retractable claw extended and she cut a circle in the glass. She quietly crawled in and plugged in a device that could decode a firewall in less than a minute. Once the firewall was down, she took the ropes and hacked into the computer and unlocked a door that works like a backdoor for the vault. As she walked through the door, her heart fluttered and a smile crept onto her face as she heard soft footsteps behind her.

She passed the loose cash sitting on carts and went to a big door in the corner and toyed with the lock for a bit before opening it.

"Ah, hello there."

She reached in and grabbed a hard drive with an orange label over it. After stashing it inside her bra, she turned around and grabbed three bands of $10,000 of the shelf as "payment" for her hard work.

As she left the vault, she closed the door and left to retrieve her plug in device so she could leave. Unfortunately, as she made it to the basement exit, she was caught in some near invisible threads. When she turned her head, she smiled as Vincent stood behind her.

"What's on the drive?"

She extended her claws and cut herself out. "Nunya."

"Mmm."

Her real name is Madeleine Mitchell, and she's from a family of thieves who make their living by stealing information or just cold hard cash.

"You know, you always let me cut myself out. Why is that?"

"You ever notice how sharp they are?"

She never noticed it before, but when she actually looked at them close up, they were cut into a diamond shape and each edge seemed like it was sharp enough to cut space.

"Aww, even after all the theft I do, you let me go. I'm so thankful."

He stayed quiet, and then he raised his head when he heard engines suddenly pull into the bank parking lot. Grabbing Madeline, Vincent vanished out of the bank and atop a roof a few miles away. Madeline walked over to the ledge of the building and sat down.

"How'd you think of "Vigil." Was it because of your name?"

Vincent looked down and saw her eyes. She took her mask off as she was comfortable doing so, and the way the moon shined off her eyes was something he couldn't resist.

"It was back when I first made an appearance here."

"Hmm?" She hummed as Vincent sat next to her and began explaining.

Four years ago, Vincent lurked in the darkness of an alleyway. He had seen a child abduction and chased after the man. He lured him into a dark, multiple laned alley and slowly stalked him.

"Listen man! I will shoot you and this kid! Just leave me be!"

The man's voice was shakey. Vincent kicked a rock out of the dark and the man pointed his gun towards Vincent, but this time, the man froze in fear.

"What do you gain from kidnapping innocent children?"

The man couldn't respond. He was staring at a man in the dark with a red eye. It was the scariest thing he had saw in his life. Vincent took a step forward and unsheathed his katana.

"Why do you see human life as something so expendable?"

The man dropped his gun and shakily backed away. The kid, not frightened anymore, thought this was so cool.

Vincent raised his katana and before the man could turn and run, Vincent was cleaning the blood off his blade as he stood behind the man. The guy's neck slowly leaked blood, and his heart had exploded in his chest.

"Woah... What did you do to him?"

Vincent said nothing. He just sheathed his katana and turned, already walking away. The boy's mom had tracked his location and found him, quickly and warmly hugging her son out of relief.

"Are you okay, sweetie? What happened?"

"I'm fine now, mom. Vigil saved me!"

"Vigil? You mean the character from your video game?"

Above them on the roof, Vincent stood still and looked down at the child.

"Vigil?"

He thought it sounded cool, and from then on, he decided to keep the nickname and thats what he told criminals and villains once he caught them.

"Wow, so heroic. You know, if you smiled a little more, I could leave my life of crime for you."

Vincent looked out into the city as she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. He looked over as she got up and put her mask back on.

"Can you get the bad guys that tried to hurt me?" She asked cutely and jumped off the roof.

"Great way with your words, Vince."

As Vincent made his way back to the bank, he noticed Madeline swinging from building to building with her grappling hook. He didn't know why, but for some reason, she made him feel different.

When he made it back to the bank roof, he heard them yelling below.

"Damn it! She got away!"

"I told you to leave earlier!"

"And get caught by that Vigil guy?! No way!"

Vincent stood on the roof and prepared his threads. "Well, that Vigil guy did catch you."

Jumping down, Vigil extended his arms and brought them in. The men all exclaimed in confusion as their bodies were suddenly constrained in sharp thread that was cutting into their bodies.

"Shit! He's here!"

Vincent has the ability to manipulate threads, and for surface knowledge, only regular threads. However, since his power awakening, there has been instances where Vincent has manipulated the fate of people and their actions using the threads. He can also manipulate ice and use spatial manipulation but he mainly uses threads. However, if someone were to push Vincent to go all out, he will unleash all three of his meta powers.

The threads slowly began cutting into the bodies of the group of 70 men. Their weapons dropped and they began coughing up blood. Vincent approached their leader, his katana in hand, and he pointed the tip of it at the leader's head. The man gulped deeply.

"I'm looking for a man by the name of Richard Smith. He runs a business where he has someone steal powers and give them to him. Do you know him?"

The man gulped and spit out his built up saliva. "N-no.."

"Your name is Albero Belmont, right?"

The man gulped loudly and visibly as Vincent raised his blade.

"I thought so."

With a swift cut, the man's head dropped on the floor. He kneeled down and left a black eye pendant next to his head, and then vanished as his threads continued to slice into their bodies.

As Vincent went back to walking the mountains, a thought rose in his mind.

"Is killing humans the right thing to do?"
