Chapter 23 - Dinner

๐Ÿ–ค Jay's POV โ€” Sunday

The office felt endless today.

โ€”

Files.

Meetings.

Voices.

Numbers.

โ€”

Everything blending into one long, exhausting line.

โ€”

I leaned back slightly in the chair, closing my eyes for just a second.

โ€”

Godโ€ฆ I'm tired.

โ€”

But not the same kind of tired.

โ€”

This weekโ€”

I learned things.

Handled things.

Decided things.

โ€”

And somehowโ€”

I didn't break.

โ€”

A small smile touched my lips.

"โ€ฆLook at me," I murmured softly.

โ€”

Because somewhere between all this chaosโ€”

I was becoming someone else.

โ€”

Stronger.

โ€”

And thenโ€”

My thoughts shifted.

โ€”

To him.

โ€”

Keifer.

โ€”

My fingers paused over the file.

โ€”

What I feltโ€ฆ

โ€”

Wasn't fake.

โ€”

That much I know now.

โ€”

What I saw in his eyesโ€”

โ€”

Was real.

โ€”

And that?

โ€”

That made everything worse.

โ€”

Because if it was realโ€”

โ€”

Then why did he hurt me like that?

โ€”

My jaw tightened.

โ€”

I'm still angry.

โ€”

Still hurt.

โ€”

But at leastโ€”

I'm not confused anymore.

โ€”

A knock on the door pulled me back.

โ€”

"Come in."

โ€”

Percy walked in.

โ€”

Finally.

โ€”

"Done being a corporate queen?" he smirked.

โ€”

I rolled my eyes. "Barely."

โ€”

He stretched slightly. "I'm back from London and you didn't even welcome me properly. Disrespect."

โ€”

"Welcome back, annoying human."

โ€”

"Much better."

โ€”

I stood up, grabbing my bag.

โ€”

"Mia?" I asked.

โ€”

"Back to NYC. Exams."

โ€”

I nodded.

โ€”

"So it's just us."

โ€”

He smirked. "The superior siblings."

โ€”

I snorted. "Speak for yourself."

โ€”

A pause.

โ€”

Thenโ€”

"Let's go out," I said suddenly.

โ€”

He blinked. "What?"

โ€”

"Dinner. Outside. Fun. Normal people things."

โ€”

He stared at me for a secondโ€”

Then grinned.

โ€”

"Finally. My influence."

โ€”

"Don't push it."

โ€”

๐Ÿš— Drive

Percy got in the passenger seat.

โ€”

"Of course I'm not driving," he said. "My face is too valuable."

โ€”

I scoffed. "Your face is average at best."

โ€”

"Excuse me? I'm incredibly handsome."

โ€”

"Delusion is a disease."

โ€”

He gasped dramatically. "Mia would never say that."

โ€”

I smirked. "You miss her already?"

โ€”

"Shut up."

โ€”

"It's been like one day."

โ€”

"Focus on driving."

โ€”

"Aw, Percy misses Miaaaโ€”"

โ€”

"JAY."

โ€”

I laughed.

โ€”

God.

โ€”

This felt normal.

โ€”

Finally.

โ€”

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Restaurant

The place was luxurious.

Calm lighting.

Soft music.

โ€”

We got seated.

โ€”

Menus in hand.

โ€”

I was just about to orderโ€”

โ€”

And thenโ€”

โ€”

They walked in.

โ€”

Keifer.

โ€”

And Luna.

โ€”

Of course.

โ€”

My expression didn't change.

โ€”

But insideโ€”

โ€”

Something twisted.

โ€”

Again.

โ€”

Luna clung to him.

Smiling.

Too close.

โ€”

I looked away.

โ€”

Don't react.

โ€”

Don't care.

โ€”

But my fingers tightened slightly.

โ€”

"Interesting," Percy muttered.

โ€”

"Shut up."

โ€”

They walked closer.

โ€”

Luna smiled sweetly.

Too sweet.

โ€”

"Why don't we share the table?" she suggested.

โ€”

I looked at her.

Cold.

โ€”

"No."

โ€”

Simple.

โ€”

Clear.

โ€”

She tilted her head. "Oh? Or are you uncomfortable?"

โ€”

My eyes narrowed slightly.

โ€”

Percy leaned back, enjoying this.

โ€”

I sighed softly.

โ€”

"Fine," I said. "Sit."

โ€”

Because I'm not running.

โ€”

Not from her.

โ€”

Or him.

โ€”

They sat.

โ€”

Me beside Percy.

โ€”

Keifer in front of me.

โ€”

Luna beside him.

โ€”

Perfect.

โ€”

๐Ÿด Ordering โ€” Unexpected Moment

Menus opened.

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

Thenโ€”

โ€”

"What are you getting?" Keifer asked casually.

โ€”

I looked up.

โ€”

"โ€ฆWhy?"

โ€”

"You still can't decide," he said lightly.

โ€”

I frowned.

โ€”

Excuse me?

โ€”

Then he addedโ€”

"Seafood pasta. No mushrooms."

โ€”

I froze.

โ€”

He remembered.

โ€”

I looked away quickly.

โ€”

"I can decide myself."

โ€”

"Of course you can," he said softly.

โ€”

But there was something in his tone.

โ€”

Something familiar.

โ€”

I hated it.

โ€”

And liked it.

โ€”

At the same time.

โ€”

Annoying.

โ€”

Food came.

โ€”

We started eating.

โ€”

Thenโ€”

Percy's phone rang.

โ€”

He frowned slightly.

โ€”

"Work," he muttered.

โ€”

He stood up.

โ€”

"I'll handle it and come back."

โ€”

I nodded.

โ€”

But he didn't come back.

โ€”

Becauseโ€”

โ€”

"I have to go," he said after a minute. "You book a cab."

โ€”

"Wow. Great brother."

โ€”

"Love you too."

โ€”

And just like thatโ€”

โ€”

He left.

โ€”

Traitor.

โ€”

Now it wasโ€”

โ€”

Me.

Keifer.

Luna.

โ€”

Great.

โ€”

Luna leaned closer to Keifer.

โ€”

"So Keifer, remember whenโ€”"

โ€”

I cut in smoothly.

โ€”

"Try not to suffocate him."

โ€”

She froze slightly.

โ€”

Excuse me?

โ€”

I smiled sweetly.

โ€”

"Clinging that much isn't attractive."

โ€”

Percy would be proud.

โ€”

Her expression tightened.

โ€”

"Some people need attention," she said lightly.

โ€”

"And some people beg for it," I replied calmly.

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

She didn't speak again.

โ€”

Good.

_

A few minutes laterโ€”

โ€”

Keifer frowned.

โ€”

"Luna, can you go check something outside? I think there's an issue with your driver."

โ€”

She blinked. "What? Noโ€”"

โ€”

"Go," he said firmly.

โ€”

She hesitatedโ€”

Then left.

โ€”

I watched her go.

โ€”

Then looked at him.

โ€”

"โ€ฆYou lied."

โ€”

He didn't deny it.

โ€”

Insteadโ€”

He got up.

โ€”

Walked aroundโ€”

โ€”

And sat beside me.

โ€”

Too close.

โ€”

"What are you doing?" I asked.

โ€”

"Talking," he said simply.

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

Thenโ€”

"I'm giving you space," he said quietly.

โ€”

I blinked.

โ€”

"โ€ฆWhat?"

โ€”

"I know I hurt you," he continued. "I'll do anything to make it right. But for nowโ€”I'm giving you space."

โ€”

I stared at him.

โ€”

Space?

โ€”

Seriously?

โ€”

Even nowโ€”

โ€”

He's not telling me the truth.

โ€”

My thoughts ranโ€”

โ€”

Is he mad? Space? Seriously?

Even now he's not telling the real reason?

Maybe I should just pack him in a spaceship and send him to the moon instead of London.

โ€”

Idiot.

โ€”

Before I could say anythingโ€”

โ€”

His hand moved.

โ€”

Gently.

โ€”

Tilting my chin.

โ€”

And thenโ€”

โ€”

He kissed me.

โ€”

This timeโ€”

โ€”

Slow.

Deep.

โ€”

Not rushed.

Not desperate.

โ€”

Intentional.

โ€”

His hand held my face softly.

โ€”

Like I was something fragile.

โ€”

Something important.

โ€”

My breath caught.

โ€”

My fingers curled slightly into his shirt.

โ€”

For a secondโ€”

โ€”

I let it happen.

โ€”

Because thisโ€”

โ€”

This felt real.

โ€”

Too real.

โ€”

Too dangerous.

โ€”

I pulled back.

โ€”

Breathing uneven.

โ€”

Eyes locked with his.

I didn't move.

โ€”

Didn't speak.

โ€”

Just looked at him.

โ€”

My eyesโ€”

Burning.

Wet.

โ€”

Because no matter how strong I actโ€”

โ€”

This still hurts.

โ€”

Him.

Us.

Everything.

โ€”

He saw it.

โ€”

Of course he did.

โ€”

His hand lifted slowlyโ€”

Fingers brushing my cheekโ€”

โ€”

Soft.

Careful.

โ€”

Like I might break.

โ€”

And thenโ€”

โ€”

He kissed me again.

โ€”

Not rushed.

Not aggressive.

โ€”

But intense.

Deep.

โ€”

Like he was trying to fix something that was already broken.

โ€”

Like he was trying to make up for all those days.

โ€”

Like he didn't want this moment to end.

โ€”

His hand held me closerโ€”

โ€”

And Iโ€ฆ

โ€”

I didn't stop him.

โ€”

Because I missed this.

โ€”

Godโ€ฆ

I missed this.

โ€”

His touch.

His warmth.

โ€”

The way everything else disappears when he's this close.

โ€”

My fingers gripped his shirtโ€”

โ€”

Pulling him closer without even realizing.

โ€”

And slowlyโ€”

โ€”

I melted.

โ€”

Into him.

โ€”

Into this.

โ€”

Into something I shouldn't be feeling again.

โ€”

Time blurred.

โ€”

Breath mixed.

โ€”

Nothing else existed.

โ€”

Untilโ€”

โ€”

We finally pulled apart.

โ€”

Both of us breathing heavy.

โ€”

My chest rising fast.

โ€”

His forehead almost touching mine.

โ€”

And thenโ€”

โ€”

I realized.

โ€”

I wasn't sitting on my chair anymore.

โ€”

I froze.

โ€”

Looked down.

โ€”

Then back at him.

โ€”

I wasโ€”

โ€”

On his lap.

โ€”

My eyes widened.

โ€”

His lips curved into that faint, dangerous smirk.

โ€”

"Oh myโ€”"

โ€”

I stood up so fastโ€”

โ€”

I almost lost balance.

โ€”

"Careful," he said, amused.

โ€”

I quickly moved back to my seatโ€”

โ€”

Face burning.

โ€”

Heat rushing everywhere.

โ€”

God.

โ€”

I was literally red.

โ€”

Like a tomato.

โ€”

He leaned back slightlyโ€”

Watching meโ€”

โ€”

That faint smile still there.

โ€”

"I know you're angry with me, my queen," he said softly.

โ€”

My heart skipped.

โ€”

"But I'll make it up to you."

โ€”

A pause.

โ€”

"I'll make sure of it."

โ€”

I looked away.

โ€”

Because if I keep looking at himโ€”

โ€”

I might forget everything again.

โ€”

And I can't.

โ€”

I won't.

โ€”

๐Ÿšช Thenโ€”

The door opened.

โ€”

Luna walked in.

โ€”

And stopped.

โ€”

Completely.

โ€”

Her eyes scanned the sceneโ€”

โ€”

Me.

โ€”

My lipsโ€”

Smudged.

โ€”

My hairโ€”

Slightly messy.

โ€”

Himโ€”

โ€”

His shirt.

โ€”

Wrinkled.

โ€”

Lipstick marks faintly visible.

โ€”

Not perfectly in place.

โ€”

Her expressionโ€”

โ€”

Shock.

โ€”

Pure shock.

โ€”

"What theโ€”"

โ€”

She looked between us.

โ€”

Trying to process.

โ€”

Trying to understand.

โ€”

And I saw it.

โ€”

That moment.

โ€”

The perfect moment.

โ€”

So I took it.

โ€”

A slow smirk formed on my lips.

โ€”

I leaned back slightly.

Calm.

Collected.

โ€”

Then looked straight at her.

โ€”

"Something wrong?" I asked casually.

โ€”

Her jaw tightened.

โ€”

"Youโ€”what happened here?"

โ€”

I tilted my head slightly.

โ€”

"Oh?" I said lightly. "Didn't he tell you?"

โ€”

Her expression hardened.

โ€”

"Tell me what?"

โ€”

I glanced at Keifer for a secondโ€”

โ€”

Then back at her.

โ€”

"That you were justโ€ฆ filling time?"

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

Her face fell slightly.

โ€”

I smiled.

Sweet.

Deadly.

โ€”

"Because last I checked," I added softly, "he doesn't forget what actually matters."

โ€”

Keifer chuckled under his breath.

โ€”

Low.

Amused.

โ€”

I stood up slowly.

โ€”

Fixing my dress.

โ€”

Then walked past herโ€”

โ€”

Pausing just slightly beside her.

โ€”

"Next time," I murmured, just enough for her to hear, "try not to hold onto something that was never yours."

โ€”

And thenโ€”

โ€”

I walked out.

โ€”

Without looking back.

โ€”

But I could still hear itโ€”

โ€”

Keifer's quiet laugh behind me.

๐Ÿ–ค Jay's POV โ€” Outside the Restaurant

The cold night air hit me the moment I stepped out.

โ€”

But it didn't calm anything.

โ€”

My heartbeat was still uneven.

Breath still unsteady.

โ€”

My fingers lifted unconsciouslyโ€”

touching my lips.

โ€”

Still warm.

โ€”

Stillโ€ฆ him.

โ€”

I clenched my hand into a fist immediately.

โ€”

No.

โ€”

Not again.

โ€”

I started walking fast.

Heels clicking against the pavement.

โ€”

Away.

โ€”

From him.

From that moment.

โ€”

From myself.

โ€”

"Jay."

โ€”

I froze.

โ€”

That voice.

โ€”

I turned.

โ€”

Jass.

โ€”

Standing near the car.

โ€”

Hands in his pockets.

Eyes on me.

โ€”

Sharp.

Observing.

โ€”

My heart dropped.

โ€”

Why now?

โ€”

He walked closer.

Slow.

Measured.

โ€”

And thenโ€”

he stopped right in front of me.

โ€”

His gaze didn't leave my face.

โ€”

Not my eyes.

โ€”

My lips.

My hair.

โ€”

Everything.

โ€”

His jaw tightened.

โ€”

"โ€ฆWhat happened?" he asked quietly.

โ€”

I looked away immediately.

โ€”

"Nothing."

โ€”

Lie.

โ€”

"Jay."

โ€”

That tone.

โ€”

I hate that tone.

โ€”

"I said nothing."

โ€”

He stepped closer.

โ€”

Too close.

โ€”

His fingers caught my wrist.

Firm.

โ€”

"Don't lie to me."

โ€”

I pulled slightly.

"Leave it, Jass."

โ€”

"Did he touch you?"

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

Wrong question.

โ€”

Very wrong question.

โ€”

I looked up at him.

Eyes sharp.

โ€”

"Don't do this."

โ€”

But it was too late.

โ€”

Becauseโ€”

โ€”

Footsteps behind us.

โ€”

Slow.

Steady.

โ€”

I didn't have to turn to know.

โ€”

Keifer.

โ€”

Of course.

โ€”

Jass's grip tightened slightly.

โ€”

"Perfect," he muttered under his breath.

โ€”

I closed my eyes for a second.

โ€”

Not this.

โ€”

Not here.

โ€”

Not again.

โ€”

Keifer stopped a few steps away.

โ€”

His gaze moved from Jass's hand on my wristโ€”

โ€”

To my face.

โ€”

Thenโ€”

โ€”

Lower.

โ€”

To my lips.

โ€”

A flicker of something passed through his eyes.

โ€”

Possessiveness.

โ€”

Dangerous.

โ€”

"Let go of her," Keifer said calmly.

โ€”

Jass let out a short laugh.

โ€”

"Or what?"

โ€”

The air shifted instantly.

โ€”

Cold.

Sharp.

โ€”

I pulled my hand free.

Hard.

โ€”

"Enough."

โ€”

Both of them looked at me.

โ€”

Good.

โ€”

Because I'm done.

โ€”

"I'm not doing this again," I said, voice steady.

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

"I'm not some prize you fight over."

โ€”

My gaze moved from one to the other.

โ€”

Sharp.

Clear.

โ€”

"You don't get to decide anything for me."

โ€”

Jass's expression changed slightly.

โ€”

Keifer went still.

โ€”

Good.

โ€”

Because they needed to hear this.

โ€”

"Whatever problem you both have," I continued, "keep me out of it."

โ€”

My voice didn't shake.

โ€”

Not this time.

โ€”

Because I meant every word.

โ€”

I stepped back.

โ€”

Creating distance.

โ€”

From both of them.

โ€”

"I'll go home myself."

โ€”

No waiting.

No asking.

โ€”

No depending.

โ€”

I turned.

โ€”

And started walking.

โ€”

Heels hitting the ground harder this time.

โ€”

Stronger.

โ€”

I didn't look back.

โ€”

Even though I could feel itโ€”

โ€”

Both their eyes on me.

โ€”

Burning.

โ€”

Conflicting.

โ€”

Possessive in their own ways.

โ€”

But this timeโ€”

โ€”

I didn't stop.

โ€”

Because for onceโ€”

โ€”

I chose myself.

๐Ÿ–ค Keifer's POV

She walked away.

โ€”

Didn't look back.

โ€”

Didn't hesitate.

โ€”

And thatโ€”

โ€”

That hit harder than anything.

โ€”

My eyes stayed on her retreating figure until she disappeared into the night.

โ€”

My jaw clenched.

โ€”

Because for the first timeโ€”

โ€”

I wasn't the one in control.

โ€”

I wasn't the one she chose.

โ€”

And I hated that.

โ€”

"She's changed."

โ€”

Jason's voice.

โ€”

Calm.

But laced with something sharp.

โ€”

I looked at him slowly.

โ€”

Cold.

โ€”

"She had to," I said. "After what you did."

โ€”

A smirk touched his lips.

โ€”

"What I did?"

โ€”

A pause.

โ€”

"That's funny. Because from what I just sawโ€”" his eyes flickered toward the door she left from, "โ€”you're not exactly innocent either."

โ€”

My fist clenched.

โ€”

"You don't get to talk about innocence," I said quietly.

โ€”

He stepped closer.

โ€”

"And you don't get to act like you care."

โ€”

That did it.

โ€”

My fist moved before I could thinkโ€”

โ€”

Straight into his jaw.

โ€”

The impact echoed.

โ€”

He staggered slightlyโ€”

โ€”

Then laughed.

โ€”

Actually laughed.

โ€”

"Finally," he muttered, wiping the corner of his lip.

โ€”

And thenโ€”

โ€”

He punched back.

โ€”

Hard.

โ€”

I took it.

โ€”

Barely moved.

โ€”

Then grabbed his collarโ€”

โ€”

Pulled him forward.

โ€”

"She's not yours," I said through clenched teeth.

โ€”

His grip tightened on mine.

โ€”

"She never was yours to break."

โ€”

Silence.

โ€”

Heavy.

โ€”

Dangerous.

โ€”

"She kissed me back," I said lowly.

โ€”

Wrong move.

โ€”

His expression darkened instantly.

โ€”

"And yet," he said, voice dropping, "she walked away from you."

โ€”

That hit.

โ€”

But I didn't show it.

โ€”

I don't.

โ€”

I won't.

โ€”

"You think staying away makes you noble?" I shot back. "You left her. Disappeared. And now you're back acting like you can fix everything?"

โ€”

His eyes hardened.

โ€”

"I left for a reason."

โ€”

"Then explain it."

โ€”

"I don't owe you anything."

โ€”

A humorless laugh escaped me.

โ€”

"No," I said. "You owe her everything."

โ€”

That shut him up for a second.

โ€”

Good.

โ€”

Because I wasn't done.

โ€”

"You think you're protecting her?" I continued. "By staying close? By playing this perfect role?"

โ€”

I stepped closer.

โ€”

"People like us don't protect. We destroy."

โ€”

His jaw tightened.

โ€”

"Speak for yourself."

โ€”

"I am," I said. "And you."

โ€”

Silence again.

โ€”

The tension between usโ€”

โ€”

Unresolved.

โ€”

Burning.

โ€”

"She's still looking at me," I added quietly.

โ€”

His eyes snapped to mine.

โ€”

"She still feels it."

โ€”

A beat.

โ€”

"And that scares you."

โ€”

His fist tightenedโ€”

โ€”

But he didn't swing this time.

โ€”

Smart.

โ€”

"Careful," he said slowly. "Don't confuse what she feelsโ€ฆ with what she'll choose."

โ€”

I smirked slightly.

โ€”

"We'll see."

โ€”

A pause.

โ€”

Then he stepped back.

โ€”

Adjusting his jacket like nothing happened.

โ€”

"Stay away from her," he said finally.

โ€”

Not a threat.

โ€”

A warning.

โ€”

I tilted my head slightly.

โ€”

"Make me."

โ€”

Our eyes locked one last time.

โ€”

War.

โ€”

Not loud.

โ€”

Not obvious.

โ€”

But real.

โ€”

And just beginning.

โ€”

Because this was never about ego.

โ€”

Or rivalry.

โ€”

It was about her.

โ€”

And neither of usโ€”

โ€”

Was ready to lose.
