Chapter 56 - Internet

After seeing the city officials off, Nick and his crew could finally breathe.

Director David arranged for some late-night catering to be dropped off at the command center. However, between the sweltering heat and the adrenaline crash, no one had much of an appetite. They forced down a few bites of cold pizza and sliders before setting the boxes aside to get back to work. With the show over, it was time for the grueling task of equipment recovery and site cleanup.

Even though DJI had their own ground crew on-site, it was a joint effort; Nick's team couldn't just sit back and watch. By the time they finished clearing the docks and packing the last transport crates, it was past 4:00 AM. Nick dragged his exhausted body back to the hotel, stood under a hot shower until he couldn't stay upright, and then collapsed onto the bed, dead to the world.

While Nick slept, the video of the light show was already setting the internet on fire.

It started on TikTok and Instagram Reels. Raw footage captured by spectators began blowing up, racking up likes and shares by the second. Within a few short hours, the most popular clips had already surpassed a million likes, and the counter showed no signs of slowing down.

X was just as fast; posts featuring high-res photos and video loops were being retweeted by the thousands, with several major news outlets and official city accounts joining the fray. By dawn, "12,000 Drones" and "Miami 4th of July" were the top trending topics in the country.

But the real explosion happened the next morning. As the East Coast woke up, major news networks, influential tech bloggers, and high-profile influencers all began reposting and dissecting the performance. It didn't matter what their niche was—tech, politics, music, entertainment, digital trends, or even military affairs—everyone had something to say. Even fashion and lifestyle accounts were sharing the "Peacock" transition from their own aesthetic perspectives.

Celebrities and marketing accounts scrambled to piggyback on the viral trend. Some "content creators" were even offering cash online for exclusive, high-quality footage just to boost their own traffic. In the attention economy, that kind of viral surge was literally money in the bank.

By mid-morning, the professional media outlets invited the night before released their official packages. These videos, shot on high-end cinema cameras with stabilized lenses, were lightyears ahead of the shaky cell phone footage. For the first time, the public could see the sheer precision of the show in crystal-clear detail.

Absolutely incredible!

God bless America!

This is insane. I'm literally crying that I didn't see this in person.

A total tech powerhouse. This is beautiful!

Let the world remember: this is American innovation baby. FUCK YEAH!

I don't even have words. Just... wow.

Holy crap!

So proud of my city. Miami showed out!

Saved and shared. Shoutout to the scientists behind this.

This looks like something out of a movie.

Amidst all the beauty, don't forget the engineers who made it happen!

Reminds me of the Vegas Dome but with drones lol!

...

Beyond the praise, the tech-savvy corners of the internet began a deeper analysis.

Okay, it's pretty, but I have to ask: is this actually that hard to do?

Same question. Why is everyone calling this "cutting-edge"? It's just a god darn' drone show!

A professional engineer in the comments section finally stepped in:

"As someone in the industry, I can tell you: yes, this is a massive deal. Swarm Intelligence and Cluster Control are some of the most competitive research fields in the world right now. This is tech that changes everything—from logistics to modern warfare."

"The previous world record was set this spring with about two thousand drones. But that was just simple formations. This show was faster, denser, and infinitely more complex. The amount of data processing required to keep 12,000 units from colliding in a windy bay is astronomical."

Wow, okay, that's actually crazy. DJI really is the GOAT. No wonder there's so much talk about regulations.

Actually, you're wrong. The hardware was DJI, but the tech came from Militech. Didn't you see the credits? It was a joint venture.

Militech? Never heard of them. Probably some shell company DJI used to dodge taxes. They're just riding the coattails.

If you don't know what you're talking about, shut up. Would DJI share the stage with a shell company on a project this big?

Who's talking? Seriously, has anyone ever heard of Militech? What kind of name is that even? Sounds cyberpunky...

If you haven't, that's on you broski. Militech was founded by a few recent college grads. Their Cluster Control tech debuted at a tech expo back in May and blew everyone away. Look up the videos.

You've got to be shitting me. A few grads and a brand-new LLC produced 'cutting-edge' tech? This smells like venture capital at work—buy some talent, slap a name on it, and rake in the cash. We've seen this movie before.

Haha, this guy gets it!

You guys are idiots. If you don't understand the math, don't talk trash.

Oh, you're the expert? Is Militech paying you to defend them?

Lmao, let me get in on that payroll, bro. I need them greens!

I'm done arguing. Here's a screenshot from the morning news. That's Ryan, the VP of Engineering at DJI, on the left. And the guy the Mayor is shaking hands with? That's Nick from Militech. He's the one who invented the system.

So? What does that prove?

Exactly. The Mayor shakes hands with everyone. A janitor is a 'staff member' too.

LMAO, shots fired!

Despite the skeptics, the camera didn't lie. Millions of people were staring at Nick's young, tired face in that freeze-frame. Very quickly, the media began pushing the story of Militech, Nick, and the breakthrough in Swarm Intelligence to the front page. The public realized that behind the spectacle was a legitimate technological leap, powered by a handful of young engineers.

In an instant, Nick and his team were catapulted into the national spotlight.

"Boss, are you awake? Get up! Everything's going sideways!" Terry's heavy pounding on the door broke the silence of the hotel room.

"Ugh, what?" Nick groaned, jarred awake by the shouting. He checked the time, yawned, and stumbled over to pull the door open.

"Boss, you have to see this! Why is your phone off? The internet is literally melting down!"

"It can't be that bad..."
