Chapter 1 - 1. Public Rejection

"I, Alpha King Kael Draven, reject you, Lyra Vale, as my mate."

The words slammed into her chest like a blade.

Gasps rippled through the grand hall.

Hundreds of eyes turned toward her cold, amused, pitying.

Lyra stood frozen in the center of the Obsidian Court, her hands trembling at her sides, her heart shattering so loudly she swore everyone could hear it.

No.

No, this wasn't how it was supposed to happen.

The Moon Goddess didn't make mistakes.

Mates weren't rejected like this.

Not in front of the entire kingdom.

Not like she was nothing.

"Your Majesty…" Her voice cracked, barely audible over the murmurs. "Please… this must be a mistake. The bond."

"The bond," Kael cut in, his voice sharp, emotionless, "is a weakness I cannot afford."

Her breath hitched.

Weakness?

That's what she was to him?

Lyra lifted her gaze slowly, forcing herself to look at him to look at the man she had loved in silence for years.

Alpha King Kael Draven.

Tall. Powerful. Untouchable.

And right now… completely heartless.

His golden eyes, the ones that once made her feel safe from afar, held nothing but cold authority.

No regret.

No hesitation.

Nothing.

Beside him stood the woman who had taken her place.

Luna Selene.

Beautiful. Regal. Perfect.

The kind of woman an Alpha King would choose.

Not a lowly omega like Lyra.

Selene's lips curved into a faint, victorious smile.

That smile broke something inside Lyra.

"I don't understand…" Lyra whispered, her chest tightening painfully. "You felt it too. The bond. I know you did."

Kael's expression didn't change.

"I felt it," he said flatly.

Hope flickered in her chest.

For one foolish second.

Then he destroyed it.

"And I chose to reject it."

The world tilted.

Her knees nearly buckled.

The bond inside her chest warm, fragile, sacred snapped.

Pain exploded through her body.

It wasn't physical.

It was worse.

It was like her soul was being torn apart.

A broken cry escaped her lips before she could stop it.

The hall erupted into whispers.

"She's really being rejected…"

"An omega? Did she really think she could become Luna?"

"How pathetic."

Lyra's face burned with humiliation.

She wanted to disappear.

To vanish.

To die.

But she couldn't.

Because Kael was still watching her.

Waiting.

"For the rejection to be complete," he said coldly, "you will accept it."

Her heart clenched.

If she accepted… the bond would be gone forever.

There would be nothing left of them.

Nothing left of the dream she had held onto.

But if she didn't…

She would be punished.

Or worse.

Lyra's fingers curled into fists.

Tears blurred her vision.

Still, she lifted her chin.

Because even now even broken she refused to beg.

"…I accept," she whispered.

The moment the words left her lips, something inside her shattered completely.

The bond died.

Gone.

Silence fell over the hall.

And just like that…

She was nothing.

Kael turned away first.

Like she didn't matter.

Like she never had.

"Prepare for the coronation," he ordered.

Selene stepped forward, slipping her hand into his arm.

Perfect.

Untouchable.

Everything Lyra wasn't.

"Thank you for your understanding," Selene said softly, her voice dripping with false kindness as she passed Lyra. "Know your place next time."

Lyra didn't respond.

She couldn't.

If she opened her mouth, she would scream.

Or collapse.

Or both.

The ceremony continued.

Music played.

People celebrated.

As if something sacred hadn't just been destroyed.

Lyra stood there for a moment longer, invisible in a crowd that had already forgotten her.

Then she turned.

And walked away.

The cold night air hit her like a slap.

Only then did the tears fall.

Hot.

Uncontrollable.

She stumbled down the palace steps, her chest aching with every breath.

It hurt.

Everything hurt.

The bond.

Her heart.

Her pride.

She pressed a hand against her chest as if she could hold herself together.

"Stupid…" she whispered hoarsely. "You knew better…"

Of course he would choose Selene.

Of course he would choose power over her.

She was an omega.

Nothing more.

The palace doors slammed open behind her.

"Lyra Vale!"

Her body tensed.

She turned slowly.

Three royal guards stormed toward her.

Their expressions were grim.

Her stomach dropped.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice still shaking.

The lead guard didn't hesitate.

"You are under arrest for treason."

The world went silent again.

"…What?"

"You've been accused of conspiring against the Alpha King."

Lyra stared at them.

Treason?

"That's not true," she said immediately. "I would never."

"Save it."

Cold metal snapped around her wrists.

Chains.

Her breath hitched.

Panic surged through her veins.

"This is a mistake," she insisted, struggling. "You have the wrong person!"

"We have orders," the guard said. "You'll answer for your crimes."

Crimes?

What crimes?!

Her mind raced.

This couldn't be happening.

Not like this.

Not after everything.

"Please" she tried again, desperation creeping into her voice.

But they were already dragging her away.

Through the palace gates.

Into the darkness.

Hours later, Lyra was thrown into a cold, damp cell.

The door slammed shut behind her.

The echo rang like a death sentence.

She hit the ground hard, pain shooting through her body.

For a long moment, she didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't think.

Then.

A sharp wave of nausea hit her.

She gasped, clutching her stomach as her body lurched.

"What…?"

Another wave came, stronger this time.

Her heart began to pound.

No.

No, it couldn't be.

Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her lower abdomen.

Her breathing turned uneven.

Her wolf stirred weakly inside her.

Not in pain.

In awareness.

Recognition.

And then it hit her.

The truth.

The realization that changed everything.

"I'm… pregnant."

The words fell into the darkness.

Heavy.

Unreal.

Her mind spun.

Pregnant.

With Kael's child.

A broken laugh escaped her lips.

Of course.

Of course this would happen now.

After he rejected her.

After he chose someone else.

After her entire life fell apart.

Tears streamed down her face.

"What am I supposed to do…?" she whispered.

The cell door creaked open.

Lyra's head snapped up.

A shadow stepped inside.

Tall.

Dangerous.

Not a guard.

Something about him felt… different.

Powerful.

Predatory.

His gaze locked onto hers.

Sharp. Knowing.

"You're finally awake," he said.

Lyra's breath caught.

"Who are you?"

The man stepped closer, the dim light revealing his face.

Handsome.

Deadly.

Unfamiliar.

Yet his presence made her instincts scream.

"My name," he said calmly, "is Cassian Virel."

The name meant nothing to her.

But the way he said it…

Sent chills down her spine.

"What do you want?" she asked cautiously.

Cassian studied her.

Not with pity.

Not with cruelty.

With interest.

"You've had quite the night," he said. "Rejected. Imprisoned. Betrayed."

Lyra stiffened.

"I don't need your commentary."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"No," he said. "What you need… is the truth."

Her heart skipped.

"What truth?"

Cassian crouched in front of her, his gaze darkening.

"You think you're just an omega," he said softly.

Lyra frowned.

"I am."

He shook his head slowly.

"No, Lyra."

His voice dropped to something dangerous.

"…you're the last heir of the Ashen Court."

The words hit harder than Kael's rejection.

"What?"

"And that child you're carrying?" Cassian's eyes flickered with something almost… excited.

"It's not just an Alpha's heir."

Lyra's pulse roared in her ears.

Fear.

Confusion.

Something else.

Something deeper.

"What are you talking about?" she demanded.

Cassian leaned closer.

Close enough that she could feel the weight of his presence.

"Your child," he whispered, "has the power to destroy kingdoms."

Lyra's breath stopped.

"No…"

"Yes."

The cell seemed to shrink around her.

Everything was spiraling too fast.

Too much.

Too impossible.

Cassian straightened, his expression unreadable.

"Which is exactly why," he continued, "they're going to execute you at dawn."

Her blood ran cold.

"…what?"

He met her gaze.

Calm.

Certain.

"Your rejection wasn't the end of your story," he said.

"It was the beginning of your execution."

Lyra's heart slammed violently against her ribs.

Dawn.

Execution.

Pregnant.

Alone.

Betrayed.

Her vision blurred.

This couldn't be real.

It couldn't.

Cassian extended his hand toward her.

"Come with me," he said.

She stared at it.

Frozen.

"Why?" she whispered.

His lips curved slightly.

"Because," he said, "I'm the only one who can keep you and that child alive."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Lyra looked at his hand.

Then back at his face.

A stranger.

A threat.

A possible salvation.

Behind her, death waited.

In front of her… something unknown.

Her chest tightened.

Her heart still broken.

Her world already destroyed.

Slowly.

Trembling.

Lyra lifted her hand.

And placed it in his.

Outside, the palace bells began to ring.

Announcing the rise of a new Luna.

And the silent execution of the girl they had discarded.

But as Lyra stepped into the darkness with Cassian…

she had no idea she was walking into a fate far more dangerous than death.
