Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Gift That Changes Everything

The days were starting to blur together in the worst possible way. Waking up, the stream already running. Angel's too sweet voice narrating my morning like a deranged radio host. The fake interactions at campus that were boosted by polls. More numbers in my phone from girls I barely knew. Then back to the same endless loop of being watched.

I was exhausted, not just physically but mentally worn down as well by the constant feeling of eyes on me. Even when the drone was not hovering, I knew the cameras were there.

It was day six, maybe seven. I'd stopped counting.

I was standing in my tiny kitchen heating up the cheapest instant ramen I could find when it happened.

My phone exploded.

Notifications stacked on top of each other so fast the screen couldn't keep up. The chat must have gone nuclear because vibrations nearly shook the device off the counter. Then the TV, which had not been turned on in weeks flickered to life by itself.

Angel vesper's face filled the entire screen in high definition. She was in what looked like a private bedroom setup now. Soft pink lighting, some plush pillows behind herc, wearing a loose camisole that showed just enough to make the chat lose their minds. That same gentle, unsettling smile curved her lips as she looked directly forward.

"Everyone, ous star has been so patient these past few days. All the likes...and all the wonderful gifts you have been sending, they've made me feel incredibly generous tonight."

Her voice was breathy, excited in that bubbly way that always hid something sharper underneath.

I froze with the ramen packet still in my hand. The water om the stove started boiling over, but I could not move.

Major Engagement Event Detected Combined Spike: 12,000+Likes+47 Big Gifts

Viewer Count: 58,742 and rising fast.

Angel Leaned closer to her camera, eyes sparkling with that too-knowing glint. "Kai deserves something really special tonight. Something to show him how much we all care. Let's spoil our perfect star, okay?"

A knock sounded at my door. It was heavy and insistent. Not anything like a delivery man's knocks.

I set the ramen down slowly and walked over like I was approaching a bomb. Through the peephole I saw a man in a clean uniform holding several large paper bags and a drink carrier. He looked completely normal, bored even.

I opened the door a crack.

"Kai Thompson?" he asked, reading off a tablet.

"Order for you. Already paid in full."

"I did not order anything."

He shrugged like he heard that everyday. "Says here it's from a big fan. Enjoy."

He handed over the bags and left without another word. The smell hit me immediately, it was real food. Good food in fact. Sushi, grilled salmon, miso soup, perfectly cooked steak, fresh spring rolls, and a couple of fancy desserts. Way beyond anything I could afford on my broke college budget.

My phone buzzed again. It was the banking app.

+$874.00 deposited by an Anonymous Supporter Group.

I stared at the number. It was enough to cover my rent, groceries, maybe even enough to fix my piece-of-shit laptop. All in one go.

Back inside, the TV screen showed Angel clapping her hands together happily, that soft smile never leaving her face. "Did you like it, Kai? I picked everything myself using the viewer suggestions. They told me exactly what you'd love the most. See? We know you better than you know yourself already."

I sat down at my tiny table and opened the bags. The food was still hot and perfectly prepared. It smelled incredible and my stomach growled loudly enough that I was sure the mics picked it up.

Angel giggled on the TV. "He's hungry. Go on, eat.

The viewers are so happy right now. This is what happens when everyone works together to take care of you."

I ate in silence at first. The salmon practically melted in my mouth. The steak was cooked exactly medium-rare, the way I liked it but almost never got. Every bite tasted like victory and defeat at the same time. It was delicious and terrifying.

Because this wasn't just kindness. It was clearly a leash. A very comfortable, and very expensive leash.

Angel kept talking the whole time, narrating every bite like it was a mukbang of a boyfriend being fed by his loving girlfriend.

"Look at him enjoying his food. So handsome when he's focused on something good. The viewers are flooding the chat with hearts. Keep eating, Kai. There is more where this came from if you stay good for us."

Halfway through the meal, the blue holographic panel finally appeared again. Brighter and more solid this time than before. It hovered at the edge of my vision, invisible to anyone but me.

{Obserever System - Star Interface}

Current viewers: 61,983

Star points:+2,347

Critical accumulation threshold reached.

Fist major fragment awakening in progress...

The panel pulsed once, then faded.

I set my chopsticks down slowly. My hands were shaking. Not really from fear this time. But a small part of me felt relief. The relief of having not to choose between electricity or dinner this month since I had enough money in my account. I hated that part of me though. I hated it as much as I hated the girl on my TV screen.

Angel seemed to sense the shift of my mood and her smile widened even more on the big screen, eyes half-lidded in satisfaction.

"You are starting to understand, aren't you? This is better. No more struggling alone in that tiny apartment, and no more worrying about bills or lonely nights. I'll handle everything. All you have to do is let me take care of you. Let the viewers love you and let me love you."

Her voice dropped to that intimate whisper that always sent chills down my spine.

"I know you are angry. I know you want to fight this, but look at what happens when you do not. Look at how good it feels when you just accept it as your fate."

I pushed the half-eaten food away. My appetite was gone.

'Accepted my fate my foot!'

That TV did not turn off, Angel stayed there, watching me with that too sweet, and too-knowing smile while I cleaned up and tried to pretend she wasn't there. The chat kept scrolling with gifts and likes. Viewer count climbing.

Later that night, as I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, the panel returned one last time.

{First Fragment Awakening Imminent}

Trigger condition: Next major emotional or physical spike

Warning: Host obsession level rising rapidly.

Angel's goodnight segment started on the TV again. She was in her softer lighting now, almost bedroom-like, voice gentle and full of fake tenderness.

"Sleep well, my perfect star. Today was a good day. Tomorrow will be even better. I promise I'll alway give you what you need...even the things you do not know you want yet."

She blew a slow, deliberate kiss toward the camera.

Her eyes stayed locked on the lens long after the kiss, that unsettling smile deepening until it no longer looked innocent at all.

I turned away, pulling the blanket over my head like a child hiding from monsters.

But the monsters were already inside the house. Inside my phone and my life. They had taken over my whole life and they were still smiling while they fed me.
