Chapter 38 - THE WEIGHT OF RUIN

The berserk state was not a blessing; it was an executioner wearing a crown of white hair.

Kyle hit the crater floor like a falling meteor, the impact sending shockwaves of jagged stone and ash rippling outward. The shadow-forged gauntlets on his forearms hummed with a vicious, predatory vibration, eager to tear flesh. The air was thick with the suffocating stench of burning chitin and rotting ichor.

What followed was a masterclass in calculated slaughter.

Dozens of subterranean abominations—armored scorpions, massive segmented sandworms, and towering dust-crushers—rushed him from the shadows of the ravine. Kyle did not dodge. He moved with a terrifying, mechanical grace, his mind partitioned by the berserk trance. When a giant scorpion snapped its serrated claws toward his throat, he caught the appendage bare-handed, the shadow gauntlets shearing through thick shell as if it were wet paper. He ripped the creature in half, hot green blood splashing across his pale white hair.

A dust-crusher lunged, its massive weight capable of shattering boulders, but Kyle drove his fist straight into its armored skull, a localized concussive shockwave imploding its braincase from the inside out. He was a harbinger of ruin, dancing through a maelstrom of claws, tails, and venom, leaving a carpet of shattered carapaces in his wake.

An hour later, the frenzy had cooled into a grinding war of attrition, and the reality of the situation turned sour.

Kyle's chest heaved, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The five-minute timer of the berserk state had long since expired, leaving his core bruised, fractured, and burning with a dull, agonizing ache. He was acutely aware that Azula was missing; she had failed to keep her end of the bargain, and the cave mouth remained silent.

Worse still, his mana reserves were plummeting. Desperate to conserve what little energy remained in his hollowed-out core, he entirely abandoned large-scale spellcasting, restricting himself to basic earth and ice manipulations—hardening the stone beneath his boots to anchor his footing and forming crude, razor-sharp shards of ice to parry the relentless waves of lesser ghouls. But it wasn't enough. The sheer volume of enemies was wearing him down, draining the last drops of his stamina.

Recognizing the peril, Vaygar tore free from Kyle's shadow-bond, his massive lion-dragon hybrid form manifesting in a burst of kinetic force as he joined the fray, snapping jaws crushing chitin to buy Kyle breathing room.

Suddenly, the air pressure dropped. The hairs on the back of Kyle's neck stood up.

A deafening roar shattered the stone walls of the cave just a few yards away. Something colossal launched itself out of the darkness, hurling both Vaygar and Kyle backward through the air.

It was the Nightmare.

A colossal black giant scorpion, an apex entity of absolute corruption, rolled onto the shattered ground. One of its massive pincers had been entirely sheared off, and deep, ragged sword gasps crisscrossed its obsidian armor, leaking thick, luminous green blood that hissed as it touched the rock. Its two remaining eyes burned with a primal, incandescent fury, radiating an aura of oppression that made the very air feel heavy and leaden.

Then, Azula stumbled out of the dark maw of the cave.

The sight of her sent a cold shock through the air. She clutched a mangled, hanging left arm, her breath hitching in a wet rattle. She limped heavily, dragging a shattered, useless leg behind her. Her high-tier armor was a ruined, dented mess, warped inward and on the absolute verge of structural collapse. A steady trail of dark blood dripped onto the stone with every agonizing step she took.

Just as her knees buckled and she was about to collapse face-first into the dirt, Kyle appeared at her side with a blurred step, catching her weight.

She looked up at him, her face pale, twisted with a crushing, bitter shame. She opened her mouth, trying to choke out words, but Kyle cut her off with a sharp shake of his head.

"Dismiss your armor," he commanded, his voice tight with urgency.

Hesitantly, with trembling fingers, she willed the ruined plate to dematerialize back into her dimension ring. It vanished, leaving her body bare except for her sweat-soaked undergarments, stripped of all protection.

Struggling for air, tears of frustration blurring her vision, she forced the words out. "We... we've lost, Kyle. You have to retreat. Now."

Vaygar, standing over them with wounds scoring his leonine hide, snarled in reluctant agreement. The Nightmare's power was simply too vast; they were outmatched.

Kyle didn't hesitate. He hoisted Azula's broken body and heaped her onto Vaygar's broad back. He looked down into the beast's golden, beastly eyes, his voice dropping to a cold, absolute command. "Run. As far away from here as you can."

Vaygar's ears pinned back, a deep, sorrowful rumble tearing from his throat. He wanted to argue, to stand and die beside his master, but the absolute dominance in Kyle's tone—and the grim reality of their defeat—compelled the beast to obey. With a heavy, heartbroken grunt, Vaygar turned and bolted away from the ravine, carrying Azula into the distance as she wept silently against his neck. The atmosphere was thick with a suffocating, mournful despair, the heavy realization that they were fleeing for their lives.

Kyle stood alone in the center of the shattered stone.

Slowly, he reached down and picked up Azula's abandoned sword from the dust. He weighed the weapon in his hand, feeling the hum of its destructive runes, and gave it a few trial swings to adjust to its balance.

He turned his gaze forward. The massive black Nightmare faced him, surrounded by a living wall of hundreds of surviving ghouls and lesser thralls that had rushed forward to form a protective barrier around their wounded master.

Kyle's mind raced, calculating the variables with cold, ruthless logic. As a mage teetering on the edge of the transition to an archmage, he knew the cold truth: he stood no mathematical chance of defeating the Nightmare in a fair fight, wounded as it was. His mana core was near empty, his stamina spent.

Yet, he saw the thread of logic in the chaos. *If the Nightmare dies, the ghouls die with it.*

There was no other path.

With a sudden, explosive burst of movement, Kyle dashed forward, charging directly into the sea of crawling thralls. The ghouls lunged to tear him apart, but right before he collided with the first wave, Kyle vaulted into the air, using a jagged rock outcrop to launch himself higher.

With preternatural precision, he descended from the sky, driving Azula's rune-carved sword downward with all his remaining strength—impaling himself directly onto the top of the Nightmare's two massive, twitching mandibles.
