Chapter 16 - No One Gets This Side

The room didn't change. The city didn't stop. But something between them had already crossed a line neither of them stepped away from.

Lin Yanyan didn't move first this time.

She stayed where she was, close enough to feel his presence without needing to reach for it.

Her eyes stayed on his.

Searching.

Not for answers she already got one.

For certainty.

Su Chen didn't look away either.

He rarely did.

But this time, it wasn't about dominance.

It was about acknowledgment.

Her hand, still resting against his chest, slowly slid upward, fingers brushing lightly against his collar.

"So I matter to you huh!," she murmured.

"Yes."

Her fingers paused there.

Then tightened slightly.

"Then don't treat me like everything else."

There was a difference in her tone now.

Not sharp.

Not cold.

Something quieter.

Something harder to ignore.

Su Chen's gaze lowered slightly, following the movement of her hand, then returned to her eyes.

"You're not everything else."

A simple answer.

But it landed deeper than anything complicated.

Lin Yanyan held his gaze for a moment longer.

Then—

She moved.

Not away.

Closer.

Her other hand came up, resting lightly against his shoulder, steadying herself—or maybe steadying him.

It was hard to tell.

"You're calm even now," she said softly.

"Should I not be?"

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Most people would have already tried to be on top of me right about now.

Su Chen's hand shifted at her waist again, this time firmer, anchoring her in place without force.

"I'm not most people."

"I know."

Her answer came immediately.

Too quickly to be thought out.

Which meant it wasn't.

It was instinct.

And that made it more dangerous.

The space between them disappeared completely.

No distance left.

No hesitation left.

Lin Yanyan tilted her head slightly, her gaze softening just enough to blur the sharp edges of her usual composure.

"You went somewhere first," she said quietly. "Before coming to me."

"Yes."

She didn't look away.

"Next time… come here first."

Not a demand.

Not quite.

But close enough.

Su Chen didn't answer immediately.

His fingers traced slightly along her waist—just enough movement to be felt, not enough to distract.

Then

"I'll consider it."

Her lips curved again.

"You won't."

Confidence.

Not arrogance.

She believed it.

That was the difference.

A breath escaped her as she leaned closer, her forehead almost brushing his.

"You don't belong to anyone," she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"But you're not leaving me out of it either."

Su Chen's eyes narrowed slightly, not in resistance—but in recognition.

She understood more than she should.

More than most ever would.

"That depends on you."

Another pause.

Then his voice lowered just slightly.

"Can you keep up?"

For a moment—

Silence.

Then—

Lin Yanyan smiled.

Not soft.

Not gentle.

But sharp.

Alive.

"I don't follow."

Her fingers slid lightly along his collar, straightening it with slow precision.

"I stand next to you."

That answer stayed between them.

Heavy.

Certain.

Unshaken.

Su Chen didn't argue.

Didn't correct her.

Didn't deny it.

Because for now—

It was true.

The city lights reflected behind them, casting faint shadows across the room, but neither of them moved away.

Neither of them needed to.

Because whatever this was—

It wasn't temporary.

And it wasn't fragile.

It was something that would either grow…

Or break everything around it trying.
