Chapter 2 - Gifts & Traitors

The prince stood silently for several minutes after the projection of Buddha slowly vanished into the air. The chamber returned to its quiet state as if nothing extraordinary had just occurred. Vishnu exhaled slowly, trying to organize the countless thoughts rushing through his mind. Meeting Buddha was not something a person could easily process, yet strangely his mind felt calmer than expected.

Just then, something unusual appeared before his eyes.

A hollow blue screen materialized in the air and floated quietly in front of him. Its faint blue glow illuminated the room slightly. Vishnu stared at it with curiosity, but he did not panic. Instead, his expression remained calm.

He immediately understood what it was.

A system.

People from the modern world had already imagined such things in countless novels and stories. Because of that, Vishnu simply spoke inside his mind.

"System, introduce yourself. What is your function? What is my role and what do I need to do?"

Even while asking these questions, Vishnu had almost no expectations. From what he remembered, many systems lacked true intelligence.

After a few seconds, a calm mechanical voice echoed in his mind.

"Host, I am a Prediction System. I can answer questions only in Yes or No format. There are many functions within the system, but they are currently locked. You must explore and unlock them yourself. At present, you can only ask questions that can be answered with Yes or No."

The voice paused briefly before continuing.

"I am connected to your soul. If you die, I will disappear as well. The longer you live, the longer I exist. I will not give you missions or force you to complete tasks. The system's abilities will unlock gradually with time. You will not receive anything ahead of time. The more you explore and create, the more knowledge and functions will become available to you."

Hearing this explanation, Vishnu felt slightly relieved. Systems in stories often forced their hosts to complete missions under threat. Fortunately, this system did not seem to operate in that way.

And that suited him perfectly.

At this moment, Vishnu already had enough problems to deal with. The empire was in decline, corruption had spread through the court, and enemies were waiting for the right moment to strike. Rebuilding such an empire would require careful planning.

Still, curiosity remained.

"Are Uncle Ram and Didi trustworthy?" he asked silently.

"Yes."

The answer came instantly.

After that, the system fell silent again, as if reminding him that it existed but would only interfere when necessary.

That night soon returned to its quiet peace. Vishnu lay down on his bed and closed his eyes. Despite the heavy burden placed upon him, he fell asleep surprisingly fast. His mind rested calmly, as if he had already accepted the new reality.

After all, he had already crossed the boundary between life and death once.

Compared to that experience, the problems of an empire no longer seemed impossible.

Morning arrived quickly.

The moon disappeared beyond the horizon and golden sunlight filled the palace courtyard. Birds began chirping in the gardens as the first rays of sunlight reached Vishnu's face.

He woke up immediately.

Vishnu had always been an early riser. Even in his previous life, he followed a strict routine.

After bathing and freshening up, he opened the door of his chamber. Didi was already standing outside.

"Prince, would you like to have breakfast?" she asked.

Vishnu shook his head.

"I'm going to the garden first."

The coronation ceremony would take place later in the afternoon. For now, he still had some time before officially becoming emperor.

Behind the fortress was a peaceful royal garden where a few guards stood for security. Vishnu immediately began his daily exercise routine.

Push-ups.

Squats.

Running drills.

Climbing exercises.

These movements were completely normal in the modern world, but for people of this era they looked strange and unusual. Some soldiers standing nearby began whispering to each other while watching the prince train.

"What kind of exercise is the prince doing?" one soldier asked quietly.

The other soldier replied in a low voice, "I'm not sure. Maybe he learned a new training method somewhere. Earlier he used to train with the soldiers, but this looks different."

Vishnu ignored their whispers.

After becoming emperor, he planned to introduce modern physical training methods and even adopt military discipline similar to the Prussian army. Strengthening the soldiers would be one of his first reforms.

After finishing his exercise, Vishnu sat beneath a tree and practiced yoga for nearly thirty minutes. Yoga helped maintain both physical balance and mental clarity. Even in the modern world, it was considered one of the most effective methods to stabilize the mind.

Meanwhile, the capital city Pataliputra was filled with activity. Delegations from various kingdoms had arrived for the coronation ceremony. Merchants prepared special goods, travelers moved through the streets, and citizens continued their daily lives.

Although the Gupta Empire had shrunk from its golden age, the people still carried pride in belonging to it. Some hoped the new emperor would restore its strength, while others had already lost faith in the future.

The coronation ceremony took place inside the grand temple.

Priests chanted Vedic mantras while assistants performed the traditional rituals. Haldi was applied to Vishnu's body as part of the ceremony. The atmosphere inside the temple felt sacred and powerful.

Finally, the chief priest stepped forward and placed the imperial turban upon Vishnu's head.

"Swear before the divine that you will protect this land and serve its people," the priest said.

Vishnu calmly took the oath.

Later he stood upon a high platform near the main fort where thousands of citizens had gathered.

"I, Vishnugupt, swear as emperor that I will honor my oath and restore the greatness of our empire just as it was during the time of our ancestors. Change will not come instantly, but with time and effort this empire will rise again."

His speech was short.

Because Vishnu believed that actions mattered more than words.

Soon afterward he entered the royal court where ministers and foreign delegations were waiting.

"Maharajadhiraj Vishnugupt, Emperor of Magadh, has arrived!" a soldier announced.

The entire court stood up in respect.

Delegations from the Maukhari kingdom and the Vakataka kingdom stepped forward, presenting gifts of gold, silver, and armor while offering polite words of congratulations.

Vishnu accepted the gifts calmly, but he could clearly see the hidden calculations in their eyes. Many of them were waiting for the Gupta Empire to collapse

When the ministers stepped forward, Vishnu secretly asked the system a question for each of them.

"Is he loyal?"

"Will he betray me?"

The answers were alarming.

Out of thirteen ministers, only five were truly loyal. The rest were corrupt, ambitious, or secretly connected to other powers.

Vishnu silently marked them in his mind.

These pests had to be removed.

Soon afterward he returned to his study room and summoned Butler Ram along with the five loyal ministers.

When everyone sat around the large table, Vishnu stood and spoke calmly.

"Gentlemen, our empire is in danger. There is much work to be done. But before we rebuild the empire, we must first clean our own house."

The ministers became tense.

Vishnu raised his hand slightly.

"I am not referring to you. I am referring to those who are not present here."

He then turned toward General Krishnam.

"General, I have an important task for you."

The general stood immediately. "Your command is enough, Emperor."

Vishnu continued calmly.

"The eight ministers absent today are corrupt. Some of them are spies and others are hoarding wealth that belongs to the empire. Worse, they control parts of the army."

The room fell silent.

"We will dismantle their power carefully," Vishnu said.

"Find the people who have grudges against them. Place spies inside their households. Discover their weaknesses."

He then looked at Minister Mohan.

"You will visit their estates and observe their families. Sons, brothers, rivals—anyone who desires power. Offer them support and let them believe the empire stands with them."

Some ministers looked uneasy.

Vishnu smiled slightly.

"If you think this method is unethical, then remember our great ancestor Chanakya. People praise his wisdom but forget how he actually built the Mauryan Empire."

The ministers fell silent.

Butler Ram then spoke carefully.

"Emperor, our treasury is nearly empty."

Vishnu nodded.

"I know. But we still have some resources left. Use them wisely."

He paused briefly before giving another order.

"First, improve the port of Tamralipti. Trade is the lifeline of any empire. If we strengthen our ports, wealth will return."

"Second, I will visit Nalanda University tomorrow. We are wasting brilliant minds while the empire declines. From now on, talented scholars will serve the state."

He stood up slowly.

"And remember one thing. I will not harm the Buddhists. Their religion was born on this land, and it will remain protected."

The meeting ended.

But before leaving, Vishnu stopped General Krishnam.

"Tomorrow morning bring several soldiers to the training ground. I will introduce new military exercises."

The general looked slightly worried.

"Emperor, the soldiers' morale is low. Their salaries are poor."

Vishnu simply smiled.

"Do not worry, General. I know exactly what I am doing."

He looked out toward the distant horizon.

"Soon… this empire will prosper again."
