Chapter 5 - chapter 4

Chapter 4 — "Stop Dying. Start Learning. Start Killing."

The forest was no longer just a place.

It had become a memory.

Not a peaceful one.

More like the kind you don't admit you survived without therapy.

Vee stood in the clearing, breathing slightly heavier than before—but not from fear this time.

From awareness.

His body felt different again.

Subtle.

Like someone had quietly tightened every muscle in his frame while he wasn't looking.

He flexed his fingers.

"…Okay," he muttered. "I'm either leveling up or slowly becoming a problem."

[CONFIRMATION: BOTH.]

Vee pointed at the air.

"I didn't ask you."

[YOU NEVER DO.]

From deeper in the forest, something moved.

Not rushed.

Not chaotic.

Controlled.

The Nightmaw stood at the edge of the trees, watching.

Waiting.

It wasn't attacking immediately anymore.

That was new.

Vee noticed that.

"…It's thinking now," he said.

A pause.

"…I don't like that."

Beside him, the girl stepped forward slightly.

Same calm posture.

Same unreadable expression.

But her eyes had changed.

Not toward the monster.

Toward him.

"You're different," she said quietly.

Vee blinked.

"…Yeah, I get that a lot. Mostly after death."

[DEATH COUNT: 7]

Vee froze.

"…You didn't have to announce that."

[I DID.]

⚔️ THE THIRD PARTY ARRIVES

Before either of them moved again—

A crack echoed through the trees.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But intentional.

Like something stepping into the story late on purpose.

The air shifted instantly.

Even the Nightmaw stopped moving.

Vee frowned.

"…Okay," he muttered. "Now I'm scared in HD."

The girl's hand tightened on her sword.

"…Stay behind me."

Vee blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"I said—"

"I heard you," Vee interrupted. "I'm just emotionally offended you think I qualify as 'behind you' material."

She didn't respond.

Which, somehow, made it worse.

Then—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

A man stepped into the clearing.

Tall.

Dressed in dark combat attire.

Not flashy.

Not decorative.

Functional.

Dangerous.

His eyes swept across the scene once.

Nightmaw.

Girl.

Vee.

Then—

dismissed Vee entirely.

"…Young Miss," he said calmly.

The girl exhaled slightly.

"You're late."

"Correction," the man replied. "You were early."

Vee raised a hand.

"…Hi. Sorry. Real quick question."

Neither of them looked at him.

Vee lowered his hand.

"…Cool. I'll just die quietly then."

🧠 SYSTEM ALERT

[WARNING: ELITE ENTITY DETECTED]

Vee blinked.

"…Oh great. The system finally learned fear vocabulary."

[ENTITY RANK: UNKNOWN — HIGH THREAT]

Vee pointed.

"Unknown rank? That's just lazy writing."

[YOU ARE ALSO UNKNOWN RANK.]

"…Fair."

The Nightmaw growled.

But it didn't attack.

It backed up slightly.

Vee noticed that immediately.

"…Okay," he muttered. "So even monsters respect this guy."

The man finally looked at him again.

This time—

longer.

He frowned slightly.

"…You smell… wrong."

Vee sighed.

"I showered this morning—metaphorically speaking."

The man ignored him again.

Which was becoming a pattern Vee did not appreciate.

⚔️ THE FIGHT ESCALATES

The Nightmaw attacked first.

Not at Vee.

At the girl.

Fast.

Deadly.

It was no longer playing.

The girl moved instantly.

Steel met claw.

Shockwave exploded through the ground.

Vee stepped back instinctively.

"…Okay," he whispered. "So this is high-level gameplay."

The man moved next.

Not rushing.

Not reacting late.

He stepped forward—

and the Nightmaw flinched.

Just that.

A flinch.

Vee blinked.

"…Did he just intimidate a monster?"

[CONFIRMED.]

"…I want that skill."

[DENIED.]

⚔️ TEAM FIGHT FORMATION

The girl glanced at Vee mid-combat.

"Don't interfere unless you can survive."

Vee nodded.

"…I can survive."

She stared at him.

"…That wasn't a compliment."

"I know," Vee replied. "Still taking it personally."

The Nightmaw roared.

It split its attention.

Bad mistake.

The man struck.

Clean.

Precise.

One strike didn't kill it—but it destabilized it.

The girl followed instantly.

A second strike—

deeper.

Vee watched carefully.

"…Oh," he muttered. "So that's how coordinated killing works."

[OBSERVATION SKILL INCREASED.]

"…Stop narrating my growth like I'm a patch note."

💀 VEE JOINS (ACCIDENTALLY)

The Nightmaw shifted direction—

straight toward Vee.

"…Of course," he said calmly. "Why wouldn't it?"

He ran.

Not blindly this time.

He watched.

Tracked movement.

Memory fragments flickered.

Previous deaths.

Angles.

Timing.

His body moved before thought again—but now it wasn't panic.

It was recognition.

The claw came down—

Vee twisted.

Barely dodged.

But this time—

he didn't fall.

He stayed standing.

"…Okay," he muttered. "That's new."

[REVENANT SHIFT: 41%]

The girl noticed.

"…He's adapting."

The man frowned slightly.

"That fast?"

Vee shouted while dodging another strike:

"YES. I'M ADAPTING UNDER EXTREME WORK CONDITIONS!"

⚔️ SYNERGY FORMATION (UNINTENTIONAL)

Something shifted.

The Nightmaw got slower.

Not physically.

But predictably.

It was reacting to all three now.

And that made it readable.

Vee noticed first.

"…It has patterns."

The girl responded instantly.

"Explain."

Vee ducked under a strike.

"Don't get hit."

She stared.

"…That's not an explanation."

"IT'S THE IMPORTANT PART."

The man stepped in again.

Another heavy strike.

The monster staggered.

Vee saw it.

The opening.

For the first time—

he didn't hesitate.

He ran in.

⚔️ VEE STRIKES BACK FOR REAL

Not a stone.

Not panic.

Not accident.

A clean movement.

He grabbed a broken branch mid-run.

Twisted.

Timed.

And struck the Nightmaw's exposed side.

Not enough to kill.

But enough to hurt.

The creature roared.

Vee stepped back immediately.

"…Okay," he muttered. "That felt illegal."

[SKILL ACQUIRED: BASIC COMBAT APPLICATION]

"…I'm collecting skills like I'm pirating software."

The girl's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You're learning mid-fight."

Vee nodded.

"Yeah."

Pause.

"…I hate it too."

💀 FINAL PHASE

The Nightmaw became desperate.

Its attacks turned chaotic.

Mistake.

The man moved first.

The girl followed.

Vee hesitated—

then didn't.

He joined.

Not leading.

Not following.

Matching rhythm.

For the first time—

he wasn't just surviving.

He was participating.

Three strikes.

One coordination.

The Nightmaw froze.

Then collapsed.

Heavy.

Final.

Dead.

📈 SYSTEM UPDATE EXPLOSION

Silence.

Then—

[DEATH MATRIX UPDATE COMPLETE]

[REVENANT SHIFT: 60%]

[NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED: COMBAT RHYTHM SENSE]

Vee stared at the screen.

"…Okay."

He exhaled slowly.

"…I think I'm starting to understand the game now."

The girl sheathed her sword.

"…You're not normal."

Vee nodded.

"Yeah. I've been told that since I died the first time."

The man looked at him again.

Longer this time.

"Interesting."

Vee blinked.

"…That's worse than 'you're strange.'"

The wind shifted.

Far deeper in the forest—

something responded.

Not to the fight.

Not to the noise.

But to Vee.

The man's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…We should leave."

The girl nodded once.

But Vee stayed still.

"…Yeah," he muttered.

"…Something's definitely getting interested in me."

[SYSTEM RESPONSE: YOU ARE NOW A POINT OF INTEREST.]

"…I hate that sentence."

The forest grew quiet again.

But this time—

it didn't feel empty.

It felt like it was listening.
