Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The Sorceress’s Gambit and the Golem Swarm

Deep within a damp, lightless underground prison, the silence was broken only by the steady drip of water—and the sound of guards hitting the floor.

A young woman walked through the corridors with the casual grace of someone strolling through a park. Her flowing white hair caught the dim light, and her purple eyes gleamed like polished gemstones. Even her heavy purple coat couldn't hide a figure that seemed designed to distract and disarm.

"Uncle, I've come for you," Charmcaster whispered, stopping before a reinforced cell. She raised her carved staff, and a pulse of violet magic erupted into a localized shockwave.

BOOM!!

The prison gate was reduced to shrapnel. Inside sat a bald, withered man in an orange inmate jumpsuit. Hex shivered in the corner, looking less like a master sorcerer and more like a broken beggar.

"Uncle?" Charmcaster's lips parted in surprise. "How did they manage to strip you of your artifacts? This prison shouldn't have had the power to disarm you."

Hex had been to prison twice before; usually, it was a holiday where the guards were too terrified to even touch his robe. But this time was different. Hex stood up, his face twisted in a mask of pure, vengeful agony.

"It wasn't the guards," Hex hissed, his voice like grinding stones. "It was two Aliens. They stripped me of my dignity and my power. Save me, niece. We have a debt to collect."

Charmcaster shattered his shackles with a flick of her wrist. "Of course, Uncle."

"I can feel them," Hex muttered, a dark light returning to his eyes. "I will use the dark arts to pulse the location of my stolen gear. We take back what is ours—and then we burn the ones who took them."

As they vanished into the night, the radio in the Rust Bucket crackled with news of the "tragic and unexplained" prison break.

"Villains get caught, villains escape. It's like a revolving door," Tyler muttered, leaning against the RV window. "What exactly is the Plumber Council doing with their tax dollars?"

"The prisons are overflowing, Tyler," Max said with a weary shake of his head. "The world is getting weirder, and the cages aren't big enough anymore."

They pulled up to their destination for the day: The Mystic Arts Convention.

"Magic artifacts, ancient trinkets, and a room full of people who don't know what they're holding," Tyler said, checking the Carnitrix. "This is the perfect place to find some 'progress'."

"Wait! I'm not ready!" Gwen's voice called out from the back. When she emerged, Ben and Tyler both stared. She was wearing her deep-red battle robe, her staff held tight, and her face was decorated with intricate purple patterns.

"Cosplay?" Tyler asked, a grin tugging at his lips.

"It's an aesthetic," Gwen retorted, blushing.

As they entered the convention center, a pair of eyes watched from the shadows. Hex stood dozens of meters away, his gaze locking onto Gwen. "She's wearing them. My artifacts... that brat is treating them like a costume!"

"They look like tourists, Uncle," Charmcaster noted, her mood shifting to something more predatory. "I'll handle this. I'll get your toys back."

Hex watched her walk away, clutching his black grimoire. My niece is getting ambitious, he thought, a cruel smile touching his lips. She thinks she's the one in control. She'll learn soon enough.

Inside the convention, the air was thick with the smell of incense and the chatter of "wizards" and "goblins." Tyler and Ben were busy ignoring the fake magic when Gwen stopped at a stall, her eyes fixed on a shimmering wristband embedded with a glowing pearl—The Keystone of Bezel.

"That's beautiful," Gwen whispered.

"Then let's buy it," Tyler said, reaching for his wallet.

But before they could move, a white-haired girl with a captivating smile approached Gwen. "That robe... it's exquisite. Where did you find it?"

"Oh! This?" Gwen beamed, caught off guard by the stranger's beauty and charm. "It's, uh, a family heirloom."

"It suits you perfectly," Charmcaster said, her voice like honey. She reached out to touch the fabric. "I've been looking for something similar. Could you help me look around?"

"Of course!" Gwen said, completely disarmed.

While the girls moved away, Tyler and Ben approached the stall to secure the Keystone. Max watched Gwen leave with the stranger, a look of relief on his face. "Glad she made a friend. She needs more 'girl time'."

WHOOSH!!

Suddenly, a dark-grey stone creature—no taller than a foot but baring jagged, rocky teeth—leaped onto the counter. It snatched the Keystone and let out a manic, gravelly screech.

"Hey! That monster stole the jewelry!" the stall owner screamed.

"Another one?" Tyler's hand went to the dial, but the convention was packed. If he transformed now, the panic would be catastrophic.

More Golemlings appeared, dropping from chandeliers and bursting through fire exits. The medieval fair turned into a riot in seconds.

Gwen gripped her staff, ready to fight, but a soft hand grabbed hers. Charmcaster looked at her with wide, terrified eyes, her voice trembling perfectly. "Gwen, I'm so scared... Can we please just get out of here?"

Gwen's heart softened. She looked at the chaos, then at her new "defenseless" friend. "I'll get you out first! Tyler and Ben can handle the monsters!"

Gwen pulled Charmcaster toward the fire exit, away from the eyes of the Tennyson men. The heavy steel door closed behind them with an ominous thud.
