Chapter 9 - Shot in the Butt

Silas bolted from behind the desk just as the third arrow formed, longer this time, brighter, humming with a low, predatory vibration that made his bones rattle. The diary hovered higher, angling itself with slow, terrifying precision.

"Hey—HEY—let's talk about this!" he shouted, arms flailing as though negotiation might suddenly be a valid defense. "We can communicate! We can set boundaries!"

The diary offered him all the compassion of a hungry vulture.

THRUM!

The arrow fired.

Silas dodged left.

The arrow corrected mid-flight.

"What... no, that's cheating!" he yelped, spinning on his heel to sprint toward the door.

He didn't make it two steps.

The arrow came for him like a guided missile with issues, streaking across the room in a blazing arc of pink light. He twisted his body, but it moved with him, as if it knew exactly where he'd be before he even thought about going there.

It hit him square in the... butt, through his clothes. Silas let out a silent scream as his mind clouded over.

The world exploded.

Silas felt the impact not as pain but as invasion. A rush of something, heat, sound, light, emotion, slammed into him like a tidal wave. His knees buckled instantly. His vision went white. His breath stuck in his throat, trapped between a gasp and a scream.

For a heartbeat, he felt everything.

Desire. Rage. Sorrow. Euphoria. Heartbeats not his own. Voices singing in a language he instinctively understood yet had never heard. Wings brushing his spine. A thousand lovers kissing across lifetimes. A bowstring drawn by a divine hand. A name both his and not his echoing through eternity.

Then the room tilted sharply.

His legs gave out.

He collapsed face-first into the floor with an unceremonious thud, arms limp, fingers twitching as the last of the pink light sank into his skin.

The diary dimmed.

Its glow faded to a soft ember.

It drifted gently to the ground, landing exactly where it had been that morning, as if it had never moved at all.

Silas didn't see any of it.

He was already unconscious, sprawled on the cold dormitory floor as something ancient curled into him like a seed finally recognizing its soil.

...

Silas slowly regained consciousness. His vision was hazy, his body heavy as though weighed down by some invisible force. Then he noticed it, a glowing screen suspended in the air in front of him, pulsing softly with pink and crimson light. Symbols scrolled across it in Greek, unfamiliar yet strangely intelligible, as if some hidden part of his mind had always known their meaning.

Κύριος Σύστημα Ενεργοποίησης: ΕΠΙΛΟΓΗ ΔΙΑΔΡΟΜΟΥ

"Main System Activation: Select Path"

Silas blinked. He could read it perfectly. His heart raced.

Another line appeared beneath it, brighter than the rest:

Cupid's System: Conquer Desires, Command Hearts, Claim Destiny

AVAILABLE PATHS: INITIATE SELECTION

A calm, mechanical voice resonated in his head, yet with a subtle seductive undertone:

"User detected: Silas (Cupid).

Core system fully operational.

Select evolution path to begin.

Failure to select will result in default initialization."

Silas hesitated. The words felt both alien and intimate, as if they were reaching into a part of him he had never explored. He swallowed hard and muttered, almost instinctively:

"System… what do you do exactly?"

"Core functions: Influence attraction, manipulate desire, induce loyalty and obsession, manipulate emotions related to love and lust across targets.

Advanced modules unlock cross-dimensional applications.

Risks: Psychological strain, social instability, dependency on system output. Potential for ascension dependent on user decisions."

Silas's brow furrowed. Cross-dimensional… targets… he shivered, part excitement, part unease. His gaze fell on the screen again. A list of options appeared in neat columns, each with its own glowing emblem:

Initiate Basic Functions – Target minor emotions, single individuals

Awaken Core Cupid Powers – Begin full activation of influence, reflexive charm, and attraction manipulation

Advanced Conqueror Mode – Multi-target influence, global-scale interactions (Requires system rank-up)

He reached out instinctively, fingers brushing the holographic interface. The moment he touched Awaken Core Cupid Powers, a wave of energy pulsed through him, tangible yet controlled. A small pop-up scrolled across the screen:

System Alert: Core Abilities Pending Activation

User Query Required: Confirm readiness for full integration.

Silas exhaled sharply, heart pounding. "Yes… I'm ready."

Instantly, a structured cascade of notifications appeared, each one detailing the abilities he was about to acquire:

Desire Manipulation – Influence emotional attraction at will

Targeted Obsession – Temporarily dominate the attention of single targets

Charm Reflex – Reflexive influence in high-stress situations

Fated Connection – Mark an individual as 'bound' to the user for future interaction

System Interface Access – Visual and auditory cues for emotional feedback

The screen blinked rapidly, confirming his selection.

System Log:

User: Silas (Cupid)

Core Abilities: Active

Status: Initialization Complete

Next Step: Skill Calibration / Target Interaction Simulation

A subtle warmth spread through his chest, pulsing with each heartbeat. It wasn't raw energy; it was data, instructions, potential, all flowing into him in a controlled, systemized fashion. He felt his senses heighten, his mind alert to the slightest emotional fluctuations around him.

The final message appeared, calm, systematic, yet with a whisper of promise:

"Core activation complete. Welcome, Silas. Your path begins now. Use your abilities wisely… and strategically."

Silas's fingers twitched. The system wasn't just power; it was an interface, a tool, a way to command influence itself. And for the first time, he felt… ready.

...

Silas blinked at the floating screen, still trembling with the aftereffects of activation. A subtle thrill pulsed through him, and instinctively, he thought of trying out one of the abilities the system had listed.

"Alright… let's see if this works," he muttered, focusing on a classmate he could vaguely see outside the dormitory window in the courtyard. He extended his hand subconsciously, imagining a thread of influence reaching toward them.

Nothing happened.

A sharp ping rang in his mind. The system's voice echoed, crisp and unwavering:

"Action failed. User level insufficient for targeted or advanced functions.

Core abilities partially restricted.

Maximum executable functions: Basic Functions only.

Recommendation: Increase level through experience or activation of basic functions."

Silas froze. So… he couldn't use the exciting powers yet. His first taste of the system had been nothing but a tease.

He rubbed his temples, frustration bubbling. "System… fine. Show me my level."

Instantly, the interface changed, a full status screen expanding in front of him like a holographic panel. Every stat, every attribute, every hidden potential he had was listed in clean, structured columns:

|CUPID'S SYSTEM|

STATUS REPORT

User: Cupid (Silas)

Level: 1 (Initiate)

EXP: 0 / 100

Core Functions: Active (Restricted to Basic Functions)

Attributes:

Strength: 6

Speed: 6

Agility: 7

Intelligence: 10

Endurance: 5

System Potential: Desire Manipulation: Locked (Level 5+)

Targeted Obsession: Locked (Level 7+)

Charm Reflex: Locked (Level 6+)

Fated Connection: Locked (Level 8+)

Special Notes: High physical capabilities detected. Recommended to utilize natural skills for early system training.

Silas exhaled. At least his physical stats were… impressive, the system noted. He could see why it was recommended to start with basic functions first; it would allow him to build synergy between his inherent strength and the system's abilities.

He muttered, half to himself, half to the interface: "Alright, guess I start small… no need to rush."

The system responded automatically, calm and methodical:

"Acknowledged. Basic functions available. Initiate training sequence? Yes/No."

Silas's lips curled into a determined smirk. "Yes."

Immediately, a new panel appeared, outlining simple tasks: observe and influence minor emotional states, manipulate small desires, subtly nudge attention, and perform minor charm tests. Nothing world-shattering... yet. But for him, it was the start.

As he looked at the system stats again, he couldn't help but feel a thrill. Even at Level 1, the combination of his natural strength, reflexes, and endurance with these basic functions could already make him formidable.

"Leveling up… this is just the beginning," Silas whispered, eyes glinting with anticipation. For some reason, he wasn't so much surprised.
