Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Secret she Carries

Joy lay on her bed staring at the ceiling, the dormitory quiet except for the soft breathing of the other sisters. The candle near the window flickered gently, casting shadows that moved across the walls.

But Joy's mind refused to rest.

What she had seen earlier that night kept replaying in her head Christiana slipping into John's office, the closeness between them, the secret that clearly should never have existed inside the convent.

She turned on her side, pulling the blanket closer.

Did I really see what I think I saw? she wondered.

Part of her wanted to believe she was mistaken. Maybe there was another explanation. Maybe Christiana had only gone there to talk.

But deep down, Joy knew the truth.

The way Christiana had looked at him.

The way John had not pushed her away.

Joy sighed quietly into the darkness.

This secret felt heavier than she expected. It wasn't just gossip it could destroy reputations, friendships, even the peace of the entire convent.

She closed her eyes, her thoughts slowly beginning to blur with exhaustion.

Maybe I should just forget it, she thought weakly.

But the image returned again, clear and sharp in her mind.

Joy shifted slightly on the bed.

The secret sat in her chest like a stone too big to ignore, too dangerous to share.

Eventually, her racing thoughts began to slow.

The quiet of the dormitory wrapped around her, and little by little, sleep began to pull her under.

Her last thought before drifting off was uncertain and troubled.

What am I going to do with this secret?

And with that question still unanswered, Joy finally drifted into a restless sleep.

 Morning Doubts

The convent bell rang sharply through the quiet morning air.

It was time for the 5 a.m. prayer.

Joy slowly opened her eyes, the faint gray light of early morning slipping through the dormitory window. Around her, the other sisters were already beginning to stir, quietly preparing for the first prayer of the day.

But Joy remained still for a moment, staring at the ceiling.

Her mind returned immediately to the night before.

Christiana walking through the corridor.

The door to Father John's office.

The closeness between them.

Joy frowned slightly.

Did I really see that? she wondered.

Part of her wanted to believe she had misunderstood the situation. Maybe Christiana had only gone there to talk. Maybe there was a reasonable explanation.

Joy sat up slowly, brushing the sleep from her eyes.

Across the room, Christiana was already awake, calmly adjusting her veil as if nothing unusual had happened the night before.

She looked peaceful.

Normal.

Completely unbothered.

Joy watched her quietly.

Could someone who looked that calm really be hiding something like that?

The thought unsettled her.

Soon the sisters began walking together toward the chapel. Their footsteps echoed softly in the stone hallway as the early morning silence wrapped around them.

Inside the chapel, everyone knelt in their usual places.

Candles flickered gently near the altar.

Joy lowered her head in prayer like the others, but her thoughts kept drifting.

She slowly lifted her eyes.

Across the chapel, Christiana knelt quietly, her hands folded, her expression peaceful.

For a moment, Joy felt foolish.

Maybe I imagined everything, she thought.

Then something small happened.

Near the altar, Father John looked up from the prayer book in his hands.

His eyes moved across the room.

And for the briefest moment

They stopped on Christiana.

The look lasted only a second before John quickly looked away.

But it was enough.

Christiana lowered her head immediately, pretending to focus on prayer.

Joy saw everything.

Her doubt disappeared instantly.

Her heart beat a little faster as the truth settled in her mind.

I wasn't imagining it.

A secret truly existed between them.

Joy lowered her eyes again, hiding the faint smile that almost formed on her lips.

Now the question was no longer if something was happening

The real question was…

What would she do with the truth?
