Chapter 140 - Chapter 140 Hot hot

The system notification shattered into glittering dust, leaving Ren blinking in the dim light. He released his grip. The black blade remained lodged in the concrete, humming into the silence.

A ragged exhale tore from his lungs. The lingering combat adrenaline bled out of him all at once, making his limbs heavy. He dragged a sleeve across his ash-smeared jaw and turned.

Across the rubble, Maki stood over her discarded weapon. Her fists rested on her hips. The feral, bloodthirsty grin had melted from her face. Now, her eyes darted across his torn clothes, lingering on every fresh cut and bruise, silently calculating the damage.

Finding nothing fatal, the rigid lines of her posture broke. The tension drained from her shoulders in a long, quiet sigh, and her heavy boots crunched over the broken tiles to close the distance.

She stepped into his reach and he just — stopped holding it together.

He let his weight sag forward, face burying into her chest.

She absorbed the impact without a flinch.

He gave a muffled nod against her torn uniform, inhaling the sharp scent of ozone, pulverized rock, and the familiar warmth of her skin.

A faint, amused huff vibrated in her chest. Her hand moved to cradle the back of his head, fingertips tracing lazy, soothing circles against his scalp.

"You're overdue for a haircut," she murmured. The usual bossy bite of her voice had melted into something quiet and steady.

A quiet laugh rumbled in Ren's chest. He pulled back just enough to look up at her, taking in her messy, dust-covered hair and her torn uniform.

"You look really hot right now," he mumbled, a tired smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth.

Maki's cheeks instantly flushed a bright, angry red.

Smack.

Her fingers snapped against his forehead in a hard, sharp flick.

"Ow!" Ren winced, pulling back and rubbing the sore spot on his head.

"What are you even saying, you idiot?" Maki snapped. Her soft, caring tone vanished in a second, replaced by her usual fierce glare. "Are you dumb? Did that ghost hit you in the head too hard?"

Ren rubbed the red mark on his forehead, but the tired smirk never left his face. He met her sharp amber eyes, completely ignoring her fierce glare.

"I'm just telling the truth," he said, his voice easy and teasing. "You're hot and sexy. Just accept it."

The blush on Maki's cheeks spread all the way to the tips of her ears. Her embarrassment instantly turned into pure, defensive instinct.

Before Ren could even blink, she swung her heavy boot and swept his legs right out from under him.

Still totally drained from the fight, Ren didn't have the energy to catch himself. His feet flew up, and he tipped backward, hitting the dusty concrete floor with a heavy thud. A small cloud of ash puffed up into the air around him.

He groaned, lying flat on his back in the broken rubble.

Maki stood over him, fists balled at her sides, chest heaving. Her face burned as she glared down at him, struggling to find a word bad enough to throw at the idiot smiling up at her.

Ren groaned, crushed concrete digging into his back as the dust settled. Before he could prop himself up on his elbows, a shadow fell over his face.

With a deliberate rustle of her torn uniform, she dropped down and straddled his waist, pinning him to the ground. Her weight landed square on his stomach, knocking the last breath out of his lungs.

Her hands snapped forward and seized his lapels. She yanked him up just enough to close the space between them, forcing him to look straight into her amber eyes. The flush hadn't left her cheeks, but her expression had shifted into something dangerously maki.

"Hmph." Maki narrowed her eyes, her voice dropping to an eerily calm whisper. "Don't think you're getting out of this just by acting dumb. We're going to have a very quiet, peaceful discussion after all this is over."

Ren swallowed. He didn't need his System to translate that tone.

"A peaceful discussion?" he echoed, voice strained beneath her grip, though he couldn't quite kill the smirk at his lips. "Should I be worried about my physical safety during this 'peaceful' chat?"

"Oh, you should be terrified." Her breath fanned warm across his face.

Ren didn't look terrified. He looked at her lips.

She saw his eyes drop. Her heart slammed against her ribs. She wanted to stay mad—wanted to yell at him—but the adrenaline was still burning in her blood, and he was right here, alive and safe beneath her.

Her grip on his jacket changed. Instead of pushing him down, she pulled him up.

Ren met her halfway. Their lips crashed together—messy and desperate, tasting of copper and concrete dust and pure relief. She let go of his collar and tangled her hands in his hair. He groaned into the kiss, hands coming up to grip her sides.

She opened her mouth, and he didn't hesitate. Their tongues met, hot and demanding. The ruined subway station, the curses, the suffocating veil—all of it fell away. There was only the heat of her skin and the breathless, frantic slide of their lips.

But Ren wasn't used to staying pinned.

His hands slid from her sides to her hips. With a smooth twist, he rolled. The world flipped.

Maki's back hit the dusty concrete with a soft thud. Now Ren was on top.
