Chapter 5 - Chapter Five: The Heart of the Forest

The closer they got—

the worse it felt.

The forest didn't guide them anymore.

Paths that used to feel familiar twisted the wrong way. Trees stood too still. Even the air felt heavier, like it didn't want to be breathed.

Liora's tail gave off a faint, uneasy glow. "I don't like this."

Kael walked just ahead of her, slower than usual. "You're not supposed to."

"Comforting," she muttered.

They should've turned back.

Any normal fox would've turned back.

But the deeper they went, the clearer it became—

this was where it all started.

The glow of the Heart Tree should've been visible by now.

Soft. Warm. Impossible to miss.

But instead—

there was only darkness.

Liora stopped walking.

"…Kael."

He didn't answer.

"Where's the light?"

No glow.

No warmth.

Nothing.

Her chest tightened. "It's supposed to be right there…"

Kael's voice was quieter now.

"…I know."

They stepped forward together.

And then—

they saw it.

The Heart Tree.

Massive.

Ancient.

Still standing tall…

but wrong.

Its glowing roots—

dim.

Flickering.

Like a heartbeat slowing down.

And wrapped around them—

was shadow.

Not scattered.

Not attacking.

Holding on.

Clinging to the tree like it belonged there.

Like it was feeding.

Liora felt something in her chest crack. "No…"

Her tail flared brighter, like it was trying to fight back on instinct.

"This is bad," she whispered. "This is really, really bad—"

"I know."

But Kael wasn't looking at the tree anymore.

He was looking at something else.

A figure.

At the base of the Heart Tree.

Liora's breath caught. "Is that…?"

A fox.

Curled near the roots.

Not moving.

She didn't think.

She ran.

"Liora—wait—"

Too late.

She skidded to a stop beside the figure.

"…hey," she said softly, nudging them. "Hey—wake up—"

No response.

Their fur was dull.

Their body still.

But not gone.

Not completely.

"They're alive," Liora said quickly, looking back at Kael. "They're just—"

"Weak," he finished, stepping closer.

The fox's sides rose and fell faintly.

Like something had drained almost everything out of them.

Liora's glow flickered wildly. "We can't just leave them here—"

"We're not."

But as Kael stepped closer—

the shadows around the roots shifted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Like they noticed.

Liora froze. "…Kael."

"I see it."

The darkness tightened around the Heart Tree.

Not attacking.

Not yet.

Watching.

Testing.

"They're guarding it," Liora whispered.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"No," he said.

"They're protecting their source."

That realization hit hard.

If the shadows were feeding from the Heart Tree—

then this wasn't just an invasion.

It was a takeover.

The faint fox at their paws stirred weakly.

A soft, broken whisper left them—

"…too late…"

Liora's ears flattened. "No, it's not—we're here—we can help—"

The fox's eyes barely opened.

Clouded.

Fading.

"…it's awake…"

The shadows pulsed.

And suddenly—

the ground trembled.

Harder than before.

Kael's eyes snapped up. "Liora."

"I know."

The darkness around the tree began to rise—

not creeping.

Not crawling.

Lifting.

Taking shape.

Bigger than before.

Stronger.

Watching them.

Liora's glow flared instinctively, but this time—

it didn't push the shadows back.

It barely made them flinch.

Her voice came out small.

"…that's new."

Kael stepped in front of her without thinking.

"Stay behind me."

"Excuse me?? I literally glow—"

"Liora."

Something in his tone—

sharp.

Protective.

Different.

She went quiet.

The shadow loomed over them now.

Massive.

Shifting.

Its form barely holding together—

like it didn't need to.

And then—

it spoke.

Not in whispers.

Not in her mind.

Out loud.

"You came… closer."

Liora's breath hitched.

"…it talks now?!"

Kael didn't respond.

He was staring straight at it.

Unmoving.

The shadow tilted—almost like a head.

Observing them.

"Light… and shadow…"

Its voice dragged, unnatural.

Like it was learning how to sound.

"…together."

Liora's tail burned brighter, fear mixing with something else.

"…it knows us."

Kael's voice was low.

"…yeah."

The shadow shifted closer.

Not attacking.

Not yet.

"Stay."

A command.

Not a threat.

Liora blinked. "Did it just—tell us what to do??"

Kael didn't move.

Didn't blink.

For the first time—

he looked like he didn't know what would happen next.

And that?

That was terrifying.

The Heart Tree flickered weakly behind them.

The shadows tightened.

The air held still.

And Liora realized—

they hadn't just found the source.

They had walked straight into its control.
