Chapter 18: The Second Technique
The technique corruption quota demanded two methods in active circulation. Seungho had one—the foundational sword form spreading through his study group, four disciples who had become dozens through student-to-student teaching chains.
The quota needed a second stream, and the deadline was narrowing.
[QUOTA STATUS: TECHNIQUES 1.5/2]
[ARC 1 WINDOW: CLOSING]
[RECOMMENDATION: ACCELERATE SECOND TECHNIQUE DEPLOYMENT]
[OPTIMAL DISTRIBUTION: SEPARATE CHANNEL — REDUCES PATTERN DETECTION]
The library's mid-tier technique section contained dozens of movement forms—footwork patterns, evasion sequences, the subtle arts of positioning that separated competent fighters from exceptional ones. Seungho selected a technique called Flowing Shadow Steps: a Demonic Cult movement form that emphasized economy of motion and breath-aligned transitions.
The DOIS analyzed the technique as he studied the manual.
[FLOWING SHADOW STEPS — CORRUPTION ANALYSIS]
[VULNERABILITY NODES: 11]
[OPTIMAL INSERTION POINTS: NODES 4, 8, 10]
[DETECTION PROBABILITY: 1.3%]
Three nodes. Three points where corruption could embed without degrading the technique's performance. But Seungho had only one corruption node remaining from his Tier 1 allocation—he had deployed eleven across puppets and techniques, leaving his budget nearly exhausted.
"One node is not enough for a new corruption template. But I can use the remaining node to enhance an existing template."
He studied the Flowing Shadow Steps for two full days, identifying a modification that would not require fresh corruption insertion. The existing foundational sword form's third corruption node could be adapted—transplanted into the new technique through careful qi engineering.
The result was not true corruption. It was corruption inheritance—a variant technique that carried the same soul-binding code as its parent, spreading through a separate channel.
"The puppets will mature and free their nodes. The techniques will spread and infect new practitioners. The system is self-replicating."
Yu-jong received the gift three days later.
"A movement technique?" The cunning prince examined the manual Seungho had prepared—a hand-copied version of Flowing Shadow Steps with Seungho's "improvements" integrated into the diagrams. "You developed this yourself?"
"Refined it from existing materials." Seungho projected the warmth of a valued alliance partner. "The standard form wastes energy during the third transition. My variant eliminates the inefficiency and increases footwork speed by approximately two percent."
"Two percent is significant in combat." Yu-jong's eyes showed genuine appreciation. "This is valuable, Seungho. Why share it with me?"
"Because alliances require investment." The words were true. The context made them lies. "We are building something together, Yu-jong. I want you to succeed."
Yu-jong's expression softened—the wariness of a political operator momentarily replaced by something that looked almost like gratitude.
"You are the best alliance partner I have had." He clasped Seungho's forearm with the grip of a man sealing a covenant. "When I achieve my goals, your contribution will be remembered."
"When you fall, your disciples will continue spreading the technique I gave you. Your contribution to my corruption network will be remembered, even if you never know it existed."
"I appreciate your trust, Yu-jong. Practice the technique. Let your faction benefit from it."
Yu-jong distributed the Flowing Shadow Steps to three of his senior disciples that same week. They practiced it, improved from it, and began teaching variations to their own subordinates.
[TECHNIQUE CORRUPTION: COMPLETE]
[CORRUPTED TECHNIQUES IN CIRCULATION: 2]
[DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS: 2 (STUDY GROUP + YU-JONG FACTION)]
[PATTERN DETECTION RISK: REDUCED — SEPARATE VECTORS]
[QUOTA STATUS: 2/2 — MET]
The euphoria did not come. Technique corruption spread rather than created; the system had already rewarded the initial deployment. But the pressure behind Seungho's left eye eased, acknowledging progress toward the arc's completion.
"Puppets: three maturing. Techniques: two circulating. Betrayals: 1.7 of 3. The numbers are trending positive."
He reviewed the ledger in his quarters that evening, cataloguing progress the way he had once catalogued quarterly reports. Every metric showed green or advancing. Every stakeholder was managed. Every cost was hidden in the footnotes.
The footnotes contained three betrayed faces—Won-ryeo's bewilderment, Jong-woo's blank shock, and the expressions that would come later when Yu-jong learned the truth.
The footnotes contained corrupted students who trusted their mentor, disciples who practiced techniques that were slowly binding their souls to a prince who smiled while he poisoned them.
The footnotes contained a healer whose hands had almost found the truth, who circled meridian variations in her notes and wrote observations that would accumulate until they formed a conclusion.
But the system only read the headline numbers. The system only measured outcomes.
And the outcomes were excellent.
[ARC 1 STATUS: ON TRACK]
[REMAINING REQUIREMENTS: 1.3 BETRAYALS]
[PUPPET MATURATION: 14-21 DAYS]
[TECHNIQUE SPREAD: EXPONENTIAL GROWTH PHASE]
[DETECTION RISK: ELEVATED BUT MANAGEABLE]
Seungho closed the mental ledger and prepared for sleep. The quota clock was advancing, but the finish line was visible now. Forty days of corruption, betrayal, and calculated kindness—and the system would consider him an adequate host, a competent puppet master, a worthy vessel for whatever purposes the artifact pursued.
"Survive the arc. Meet the quotas. Earn the system's patience for another period."
The analyst's mind accepted the framework. The analyst's mind had been trained to accept frameworks, to optimize within constraints, to measure success by metrics that someone else defined.
The footnotes would wait.
They always waited.
