Chapter 43: The Fifth Puppet and the Bracket Reveal

The puppet quota demanded five.

Seungho reviewed the DOIS's status display through intrusive cognition, cataloguing the gap between current assets and required completion. Four puppets active. One remaining. The deadline pressure manifested as a constant low-grade ache that had become his baseline state since Arc 2 began.

[PUPPET QUOTA: 4/5 — INSUFFICIENT]

[DAYS TO TOURNAMENT: 28]

[URGENCY: ELEVATED]

[RECOMMENDED TARGET: MEDICAL SUPPORT STAFF — HIGH VALUE]

The tournament's medical preparation created opportunities. Support disciples cycled through training exercises, providing assessment coverage for combat injuries, conditioning evaluations, and pre-fight readiness certifications. One of them—Shin Eun-bi, a Third-Rate cultivator assigned to arena medical support—had caught the DOIS's attention during the previous day's workshop.

Eun-bi was twenty-three, competent, and frustrated. Her meridian healing techniques were sophisticated enough for advancement, but her clan connections were insufficient for promotion. She had been passed over for senior positions three times, each rejection reinforcing the Academy's message that talent without patronage meant stagnation.

"The profile matches my previous successful corruptions. Ambition without outlet. Competence without recognition. Hunger without satisfaction."

The medical preparation workshop provided natural access. Seungho attended under the pretext of ensuring his own tournament conditioning, observing the support disciples as they practiced diagnostic protocols.

"Your meridian assessment technique shows unusual precision," he said to Eun-bi during a break between sessions. The compliment was calculated—targeting exactly the skill that made her valuable and exactly the skill her superiors had failed to acknowledge.

Eun-bi's surprise was visible. Princes rarely spoke to support staff except to issue commands. "Thank you, Third Prince. I have refined the technique over several years."

"Refinement is undervalued in the Academy." Seungho projected the sympathetic understanding of someone who recognized overlooked talent. "I learned a healing technique during my cultivation training that integrates well with meridian assessment. It accelerates diagnostic speed without sacrificing accuracy. Would you be interested in learning it?"

The technique was corrupted. Two Surface Corruption nodes, embedded in the qi circulation pattern that accompanied meridian diagnostic protocol. The corruption would mature in approximately two weeks—before the tournament's second round, providing intelligence access throughout the competition.

Eun-bi accepted with the gratitude of someone receiving unexpected recognition.

[CORRUPTION DEPLOYMENT: SUCCESSFUL]

[TARGET: SHIN EUN-BI — TOURNAMENT MEDICAL SUPPORT]

[NODES: 2 (SURFACE)]

[MATURATION TIMELINE: 14 DAYS]

[ACCESS VALUE: COMBATANT MEDICAL RECORDS, INJURY REPORTS, TREATMENT SCHEDULES]

[PUPPET QUOTA: 5/5 — MET]

Cold euphoria pulsed for three seconds. Maintenance dosage. The craving for the next reward arrived before the current one had fully faded.

"The fifth puppet. Medical intelligence access during the tournament. Every injury report, every treatment schedule, every physical weakness catalogued by the healing staff—now accessible."

Three days later, the bracket announcement arrived.

The Grand Hall filled with every prince in the Academy, their factions clustering in careful formations that mapped political allegiances. The Lord's representative stood at the central platform, a massive bracket display arranged behind him on silk scrolls that would record the tournament's progression.

"The Tournament of Princes bracket has been determined," the representative announced. "All matchups have been reviewed and approved by the Elder Council."

[BRACKET ANALYSIS: INITIATING]

[FIRST ROUND: SEUNGHO VS CHEON WON-DO (BLADE CLAN)]

[SECOND ROUND: WINNER VS POISON CLAN MATCHUP WINNER]

[SEMIFINAL: BRACKET PATH INTERSECTS CHEON YEO-WOON]

[PROBABILITY ASSESSMENT: FIRST ELDER MANIPULATION — 94%]

The bracket's structure was visible to anyone with political literacy.

Seungho's path was designed to exhaust him. First round against a strong Blade Clan prince—the same faction that had attempted his assassination. Second round against a Poison Clan fighter whose techniques required careful qi management to counter. Third round culminating in the semifinals against Cheon Yeo-woon—the most dangerous opponent in the tournament, positioned perfectly to destroy a weakened Third Prince.

"The First Elder's fingerprints are on every matchup. He has arranged the bracket as a weapon."

Chan-sung found him after the announcement, his expression carrying the tactical assessment that characterized his combat mind.

"The path is brutal." Chan-sung's voice was low, meant only for Seungho. "Blade Clan aggression in round one. Poison techniques in round two. Yeo-woon in the semifinal. They are not trying to eliminate you—they are trying to destroy you in stages."

"The First Elder's strategy."

"His preferred candidate has the easiest bracket path." Chan-sung nodded toward a minor prince whose matchups consisted entirely of weak opponents. "He will arrive at the finals rested while you arrive exhausted or dead."

[DOIS PRIORITY COMMUNICATION: ACTIVATING]

[NANOMACHINE SEED DEPLOYMENT: OPTIMAL WINDOW IDENTIFIED]

[SEMIFINAL MATCH VS YEO-WOON: GUARANTEED PROXIMITY, PHYSICAL CONTACT DURING COMBAT]

[SURVEILLANCE SEED DEPLOYMENT: DEMANDED]

[DETECTION RISK: 25%]

The system was not concerned with survival. It was calculating opportunity.

The semifinal against Yeo-woon created both crisis and possibility. Combat proximity guaranteed physical contact. Physical contact enabled surveillance seed deployment—the demonic-digital bridge formation that would begin the parasitic connection to Yeo-woon's nanomachines.

The DOIS demanded the attempt. The detection risk was one in four.

"If I survive three rounds against increasingly dangerous opponents, I reach Yeo-woon. If I reach Yeo-woon, the system demands I attempt to hack the most advanced technology in the world during a public fight witnessed by the entire cult hierarchy."

Looking at the bracket, Seungho counted the fights between him and the semifinal. Three layers of disguise he would need to shed. Three rounds of combat that would expose technique patterns to observers. Three opportunities for the detection threads to accumulate enough data to destroy him.

By the time he reached Yeo-woon, there might be no disguise left.
