Chapter 3 - "Silent Currents"

Chapter 3

The seventh prince stood at the edge of the ballroom, motionless as a statue. Candlelight danced across his sharp features, yet his expression betrayed nothing. To the court, he was distant, almost unapproachable—the youngest of seven princes, yet his presence carried a quiet weight that demanded attention.

She moved through the crowd, laughter spilling lightly from her lips, unaware of the scrutiny she drew. Every glance he cast in her direction was deliberate, measured, as if weighing her against an invisible scale. The other princes thrived in boldness and charm, but he—he thrived in silence. A single word, a controlled movement, a fleeting gaze—these were his tools.

Later, the hall emptied, leaving the echoes of music lingering in the corners. She found herself wandering toward the palace gardens, drawn inexplicably by the scent of roses and the quiet solace of the moonlit paths.

From the shadows, he observed. The seventh prince had studied her, memorized the way she tilted her head when deep in thought, the way her hands fidgeted with loose strands of hair. Yet to anyone else, he remained untouchable, cold, unreadable.

"Do you come here often?" His voice, low and controlled, cut through the still night. It was calm, almost indifferent, but the slight tension beneath the surface did not escape her.

She turned, startled, though she tried to mask it. "Sometimes. It… feels peaceful."

He nodded once, eyes narrowing faintly as though assessing a puzzle only he could see. The air between them carried a strange current—silent yet heavy, like water waiting to crash.

A flicker of movement at the edge of the garden caught his attention. One of his older brothers had been watching, too. Rivalry among the princes ran deep, each vying for influence, power, and the crown's favor. Being the youngest and last-born, he had learned early to trust no one, to hide every intent, every emotion. And yet… she stirred something inside him that no strategy could contain.

He stepped back into the shadows, leaving her alone beneath the silvered light of the moon. She felt a pull she could not explain, a connection that seemed to hum beneath the surface, though the prince himself had revealed nothing.

Somewhere in the palace, a soft laugh echoed. But it was not hers, and it sent a shiver down her spine. Eyes darting to the darkened corridors, she felt that this night had only begun to unravel secrets she could not yet comprehend.
