Chapter 29 - True and False Pursuits

"Your Majesty, look at this," Drogon finally said, his voice like music to Barristan's ears.

Taking the scroll and reading its contents, Daenerys was both shocked and suspicious.

She already knew Varys's identity—he had been the one secretly relaying her whereabouts to the usurper, forcing her and her brother Viserys to flee endlessly.

Now, Varys was offering his loyalty to her. She found it hard to believe and even harder to accept.

"Ser Barristan, what do you think of this letter of allegiance? Varys forced my brother and me to flee for so long. I can't accept his loyalty. And if he truly wanted to join us, wouldn't he have come in person? Is he afraid I'll kill him?"

If Varys had wanted to kill you, you'd have been dead countless times by now! Drogon thought, unable to suppress the thought as Daenerys finished speaking.

Varys's network spanned three continents, with only the little-known Ulthos continent south of Asshai remaining beyond the reach of his little birds.

If he had wanted to kill the young Targaryen siblings, it would have been laughably easy. The opportunities had been endless. The only reason they had survived this long was because Varys, as the spymaster, had been able to perfectly orchestrate their endless pursuit without ever killing them, all while avoiding the king's notice.

Hearing Drogon's inner thoughts, Daenerys recalled the humiliation she had suffered earlier. She had never liked Varys, but why would Drogon say such a thing?

She carefully reviewed her life of constant escape since she could remember. They had almost always managed to evade their pursuers by a step, a stroke of extraordinary luck. The only assassination attempt, with poisoned wine, had been foiled by Jorah.

Could it be true, as Drogon suggested, that Varys had never truly tried to kill her and her brother?

"Your Majesty, though I have served with Varys for many years, I do not know him well. I believe he is a master of assessing situations, with a smooth touch and a mind full of schemes. He has done no great good, but neither has he committed any major atrocities," Barristan replied after a moment's thought.

After hearing Barristan's account, Daenerys pondered Drogon's inner thoughts again. If what he said was true, why had Varys been indirectly protecting them, and for what purpose?

A sudden idea struck her, and she asked, "He has not come in person, but promised to provide us with necessary intelligence in King's Landing and Slaver's Bay, and to find the right moment to win allies for us. Can these promises be trusted?"

*You are his intended Queen. If you continue to treat ordinary people with the same liberation you've shown the slaves, he will not betray you.* Hearing Daenerys ask Barristan, Drogon recalled the future conflict between Varys and the Dragon Mother.

*I've been tricked!* Daenerys thought with secret delight. Her question to Barristan was merely a pretense; her true goal was to hear Drogon's response.

"I don't think we can fully trust him," Barristan replied cautiously after a moment's hesitation. He was unaware that his Queen had already received the answer she sought, and that Drogon had been cleverly manipulated into revealing it.

"Ser Barristan, fetch a banner. I'll have Drogon inform Varys that I accept his allegiance," Daenerys commanded.

Though still struggling to accept the loyalty of someone who had once hunted her, Daenerys resolved to heed Drogon's inner voice.

*I don't want to do this boring task!* Drogon thought, a thousand times unwilling to be sent to fulfill Varys's agreement with the Dragon Mother.

"Your Majesty, I believe we should reconsider. Varys's usual conduct..."

"I'll be careful!" Daenerys replied, her voice firm and unwavering. Barristan had no choice but to turn and retrieve the great banner.

A few minutes later, Barristan returned with a black banner bearing a crimson three-headed dragon—the Targaryen family crest.

"Drogon, go fly around Astapor with this banner!" Though she knew he'd refuse, Daenerys wanted to spite him.

Drogon turned his head and snorted in defiance.

She repeated her command, but Drogon ignored her. Gritting her teeth, she said, "Then Viserion will go!"

Drogon left the room, flew into the air, and yanked Viserion down. He squawked and gestured wildly, teaching the younger dragon how to grip the banner with his claws and soar through the sky.

This was the signal he'd agreed upon with Varys: if Daenerys accepted his loyalty, he would have a dragon fly the Targaryen banner around Astapor. That would be his sign.

Barristan was astonished to see Drogon teaching Viserion like a human. As a former member of the Kingsguard under the Mad King Aerys, he knew the Targaryen family history well and understood dragons quite well.

Never had they heard of a dragon shrinking after growing, nor seen one as intelligent as Drogon. This only strengthened their conviction that Daenerys was the future ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, the true Dragon Queen.

Viserion understood Drogon's meaning and excitedly pawed at the banner a few times before grabbing both ends and soaring into the air.

The surrounding soldiers and residents had already noticed Viserion's descent. When they saw him actually tear a banner from the ground and fly into the sky, they all looked up in curiosity.

Viserion didn't fly too high, but the banner snapped and fluttered in the wind. The three fire dragons seemed to come alive, soaring and dancing against the breeze. Residents who heard the news rushed out of their homes to gaze at the sky, and even devout slaves knelt in worship before the dragons and the banner.

Daenerys, upon hearing the report, was overjoyed. She hadn't expected this simple, coded display to have such a profound effect.

While Viserion displayed the banner, Daenerys summoned Jorah and the others to a temporary council chamber.

They too had witnessed the giant dragons waving the banner in the sky, their astonishment mixed with uncertainty about whether it was merely a display or held deeper significance.

Inside the chamber, Ser Barristan, the Queen's Kingsguard, stood to Daenerys's left, while Missandei stood to her right. Jorah and the Bloodrider Rakharo stood slightly farther away.

Besides the familiar faces, Drogon also spotted a new recruit with a resolute expression, dark skin, and a lean, wiry build.

Drogon guessed this must be Grey Worm, the commander chosen by the Unsullied.

After Daenerys freed the Unsullied, she learned his name and offered to let him change it. But he refused, saying the name Grey Worm had brought him to Daenerys and represented good fortune, and he wouldn't part with it.

Grey Worm cast a curious glance at Drogon perched on Daenerys's shoulder. This was his first time seeing the dragon up close.

Compared to the other two dragons' immense size, Drogon looked almost like a hatchling. Yet, after witnessing Drogon's brutal one-on-two battle against Rhaego and the others, Grey Worm didn't underestimate him for a moment.

As a master of combat and killing techniques, Grey Worm deeply understood the terrifying power contained within such a small body—the strength of a dragon.

His previously unwavering gaze now lingered on Drogon as he observed him for a while.

"You've all seen the banner in the sky," Daenerys announced once everyone had gathered. "It's actually a signal to Varys, the Eight-Legged Spider of King's Landing, indicating that I accept his loyalty."
