Chapter 89 - Suppression

Ordering the bodies to be cleared, Jorah and his twenty-odd men rushed toward the Pyramid where Daenerys was. With so many Sons of the Harpy attacks occurring, Queen Daenerys would surely summon them back for a council.

Drogon circled Meereen once, slaying a dozen more Sons of the Harpy before returning to the Pyramid.

At the Pyramid, the Unsullied had just carried Grey Worm and Barristan inside.

Grey Worm was unconscious from severe wounds. Barristan's injuries were relatively minor, save for a serious wound to his left shoulder; he had no broken bones.

Daenerys gasped in horror at the large bloodstain on Grey Worm's unconscious belly. She hurriedly had a physician examine his wounds and only relaxed when told his life was not in danger.

After settling Grey Worm and Barristan, Daenerys rushed to hold the newly returned Drogon, checking him for injuries.

She wiped his entire body with a silk cloth, and only then did she feel relieved to find that all the blood was from others. When she had seen hundreds of Sons of the Harpy charging at Drogon from the top of the Pyramid, vying to become dragon-slayers, she had nearly screamed aloud. She had only held back for fear of distracting him.

She never expected Drogon to weave through the hundreds of attackers like lightning, emerging unscathed and instantly crippling the vast majority of the Sons of the Harpy, who surrendered in terror.

Stroking Drogon's glossy, dark scales, Daenerys gave them a gentle squeeze. They were as hard as iron—no wonder he could withstand so many blades drawn against him.

After being thoroughly rubbed down by Daenerys, Drogon had grown a bit embarrassed. Seizing a moment when her grip loosened, he escaped her "clutches" and took to the sky.

Once she was sure Drogon was uninjured, Daenerys turned to Ser Jorah, who had just returned, and commanded, "Ser Jorah, take men to Xitzdala's estate at once. Force him to reveal all information regarding the Sons of the Harpy. If he still refuses to speak, bring him and his entire family here to me."

This attack by the Sons of the Harpy had nearly cost Daenerys a senior officer and her most loyal Queen's Guard.

She no longer had the patience to wait for Xitzdala to volunteer information about the Sons of the Harpy. If he dared to remain silent, Daenerys would not hesitate to uproot his entire family.

After Jorah left, Daenerys turned to a Second Sons mercenary. "Deputy Commander Barristan, you and Tyrion will interrogate the captured Sons of the Harpy. You must unearth their masterminds and the families backing them!"

After Daario's departure, Daenerys had appointed Jorah as the Second Sons' deputy commander, tasking him and Barristan with managing the mercenaries in Meereen.

Daenerys had never expected such a major attack today. Meereen had seemed so calm on the surface; the Great Masters had all been currying favor with her, some even donating rare books to the academy. Only now did she realize that conquering a city was no simple feat.

She couldn't help but worry about Astapor and Yunkai, the other slave cities of Slaver's Bay. She wondered how things were there. And what about Rhaego and Westerion? This was their first true battle. Even with Drogon's protection, Daenerys couldn't shake her anxiety.

Over an hour later, a Second Sons mercenary rode in to report. Under pressure, Xitzdala had finally revealed the two hiding spots of the Sons of the Harpy. He now awaited Daenerys's orders.

"Blue Pigeon, take five hundred men and Ser Jorah to the hiding spots Xitzdala revealed. Also, send men to protect House Lorak. I will not have any family that has sworn fealty to me suffer harm."

The moment Xitzdala saw Ser Jorah, he knew he could no longer keep his secrets. His father, a Great Master of the Council, had already informed him that the Sons of the Harpy would launch a major attack—he just didn't know the exact timing.

Now that Queen Daenerys had sent men to his door, he knew his family would never survive the Queen's wrath if he dared to refuse cooperation.

Using the information Xitzdala provided, Jorah and Barristan quickly located the Sons of the Harpy's two secret hideouts.

When they arrived at the first, over a hundred Sons of the Harpy involved in the attack were gathered, conferring on some unknown matter.

Jorah's arrival caught them completely by surprise. With over six hundred men against a hundred, they quickly overwhelmed the rebels, killing more than thirty and capturing the rest to be taken back to the Pyramid for interrogation.

The second hideout had fewer men. After a dozen were killed, the rest were all captured.

Among the hundreds incinerated by Drogon's sudden strike, most were freemen serving the Great Masters, with a small number being their nephews and other close kin.

The mercenaries' torture methods were as varied as they were brutal. Pulling out fingernails was merely child's play. They also employed instruments like the spiked chair, saws, and expanders. The captured Sons of the Harpy broke under the torture and confessed everything after only a few rounds.

Each time someone confessed, Daenerys sent a small group, including one or two Dothraki, to the Great Master's home to make arrests and seize property.

Looting was the Dothraki's favorite pastime, and they did it with ruthless thoroughness, eager to strip the very plaster from the walls of the Great Masters' homes.

The interrogations continued, uncovering several more Harpy strongholds, which Daenerys then ordered to be systematically dismantled.

Meereen, already reeling from the sudden attack, was thrown into chaos once more. Great Masters and their families were dragged from their homes, wailing in despair.

Every freeman and Great Master suspected of involvement in the Sons of the Harpy attack was imprisoned without exception. Whether they had actually participated would be determined through individual interrogations.

After the wave of arrests, Meereen was finally cleared. Daenerys could only rest easy when she saw the dungeons overflowing with prisoners and the newly constructed cells filled to capacity.

The Harpies were temporarily silenced. With Barristan Selmy no longer guarding her, Rakaro and the other two Blood Covenant Guards returned to their Khaleesi's side.

As the attack gradually subsided, Drogon decided to check on his younger brothers in Astapor and Yunkai. Though the Mother of Dragons had assured him the two dragons would be fine, this was their first battle, and he still felt a lingering sense of worry.

In less than twenty minutes, he arrived over Yunkai. From afar, he could see dozens of large ships anchored in Slaver's Bay, just outside the city walls.

Massive trebuchets on the ships continuously hurled boulders at the city walls, while fire arrows rained down from the decks. The attackers and defenders were locked in a fierce struggle.

*Roar!*

A piercing dragon's cry echoed from the distance as a golden shadow, larger than a warhorse, soared through the sky. It was the golden dragon, Westerion.

Seeing the golden dragon charging toward them, the trebuchets on the ships immediately pivoted, launching boulders at the approaching shadow. The archers on deck were equally active, drawing their bows and unleashing a volley of arrows at Westerion.

Undeterred by the rain of stones and arrows, Westerion didn't flinch. He slightly lifted his left wing to dodge a boulder, then dove through the arrows, his massive maw opening as he neared the ships. A torrent of scorching dragonfire erupted, instantly incinerating the trebuchets and several crewmen who had no time to escape.

After sweeping past the first ship, Westerion wheeled around and charged toward another vessel fifty meters away.
