The caravan rolled slowly back toward Valoria under the light of the three moons. The journey that had taken two days outbound now felt heavier, the wagons loaded with rare dungeon crystals and the invisible weight of everything that had happened. Kai rode near the rear again, hood pulled low, one hand resting lightly over the inner pocket where Seraphiel's glowing orb pulsed with faint warmth.
Lyra rode beside him, her left shoulder and ribs tightly bandaged. Every bump in the road made her wince, yet she refused to complain out loud. Instead she kept shooting him sideways glances, jaw tight, muttering insults under her breath.
You're enjoying this, aren't you? she growled softly. Me riding here all stitched up because some coward shot me from behind. If you smirk even once I swear I'll drag you off that horse.
Kai's lips curved beneath the hood. I'm not smirking. I'm just glad you're still breathing enough to threaten me.
Lyra's cheeks flushed. She adjusted her axes with her good arm and looked away. I hate you. I hate that you pulled me out of the fight like some weak little girl. I hate that I let you.
You didn't let me, Kai said calmly. You were bleeding and still trying to swing those axes. I just made sure you didn't die before you could keep hating me properly.
She snorted, but the fiery thread between them glowed warmer than ever in his Divine Thread Sense. The tension that had been building since the academy was no longer just hate. It was something thicker, something that made the air crackle whenever they rode too close.
By the time the walls of Valoria appeared on the horizon the next morning, the entire caravan was exhausted but alive. Captain Rhea rode ahead to announce their return. The outer gates opened, but the mood inside the city was anything but welcoming. Wanted posters with Kai's hooded face and glowing purple eyes were plastered on every wall. Guards patrolled in larger groups. Whispers followed the caravan like shadows.
The Fatebreaker… He was here… The one with the System…
Kai kept his head low, Silent Thread Reaper partially active so his presence remained muted. Lyra stayed dangerously close, her good hand never far from her axes, eyes scanning every alley like she was ready to burn the whole city if anyone looked at him wrong.
They reached the Iron Fang Mercenary Guild just before noon. Captain Rhea handed over the dungeon crystals and gave a short report. The guild master — a grizzled veteran with a missing eye — listened in silence, then slid a heavy pouch of gold across the counter.
You did good, he grunted. Especially you two. The Voss girl and the shadow. Word travels fast. The academy is offering extra bounties for anyone who brings in the Fatebreaker alive.
Lyra slammed her fist on the counter hard enough to make the wood creak. He's with me. Anyone tries to collect that bounty and I'll burn their fucking guild down.
The guild master raised an eyebrow but said nothing. He simply nodded toward Kai. You're officially registered now. Try not to get killed before you spend that gold.
Night fell quickly once they left the guild. The caravan dispersed, but Kai and Lyra found a quiet inn on the edge of the merchant district — far from the academy walls. Lyra claimed the room with two beds, then immediately collapsed onto one, wincing as she pressed a hand to her bandaged ribs.
Kai sat on the edge of the other bed, watching her. The orb in his pocket grew warmer, almost urgent.
Get some rest, he said quietly. I'll take first watch.
Lyra glared at him, eyes heavy with pain and exhaustion. Don't you dare disappear again without telling me. I'm not in the mood to wake up wondering where my idiot shadow freak went.
He smirked. Wouldn't dream of it.
She muttered something that sounded suspiciously like "liar" before closing her eyes.
Kai waited until her breathing evened out, then lay back on his own bed. The moment his eyes closed, the world shifted.
He stood in a vast, star-filled void. Silver threads of fate stretched endlessly in every direction — some broken, some glowing brightly, others wrapped in dark, oppressive chains. Seraphiel floated before him, no longer translucent but solid and radiant, her once-broken wings now healed into shimmering silver feathers that caught starlight.
Welcome to the Dreamweave, Fatebreaker, she said, her voice echoing like distant bells. This is the only place where your system and my power can speak freely, away from the eyes of the other gods.
Kai looked around, calm but alert. The system chimed softly in his mind, clearer and more alive than ever before.
Fateweaver System – Dream Integration Unlocked. Host has formed a true pact with a Fallen Goddess. New Core Ability: Thread Communion. Time flows differently here. One hour in the dream equals only minutes in the waking world.
Seraphiel floated closer, her expression serious. Your system is evolving faster than even I anticipated. The gods above are already stirring. They sense the crack you created when you revived those mortals and sealed our pact. Soon they will send their chosen ones — heroes bound by their fake Systems — to hunt you down.
Kai studied the endless web of threads. One burned especially bright and hot — Lyra's. Others were thinner, belonging to the mercenaries. Far in the distance he saw cold, rigid threads connected to Elara and the academy nobles.
What do I do with all this? he asked.
You learn to cut the chains they placed on mortals… and weave new ones, Seraphiel replied. But first, accept my gift.
She touched his forehead. A surge of pure silver energy flooded his mind.
New Passive Unlocked: Goddess's Insight. You can now glimpse the true names and origins of any System you encounter. Weak Systems will reveal their god's identity. Stronger ones will resist.
The system chimed again, almost excited.
Fate Points: +3,200 Silent Thread Reaper – Level 2 Divine Thread Sense – Level 2 New Mission Generated: Return to Valoria Academy within seven days. Form your second Eternal Bond. Reward: Major Class Evolution + Second World Announcement.
Kai's eyes snapped open in the real world. Only a few minutes had passed. Lyra was still asleep, but she had shifted closer in her bed, one arm hanging off the side as if unconsciously reaching toward him even in her dreams.
He stood quietly and walked to the window. The city lights of Valoria glittered below, but the tension in the air was thicker than before. More guards patrolled the streets. More wanted posters fluttered in the night breeze.
A soft groan came from behind him. Lyra stirred, then winced sharply as she tried to sit up, one hand pressed to her bandaged shoulder.
Damn it… she muttered, voice thick with pain. This stupid wound is going to slow me down for days.
Kai moved to her side without thinking. He sat on the edge of her bed and gently checked the bandages, his fingers careful but sure.
You fought like a demon even after you were hit, he said softly. Most people would have stayed down.
Lyra looked up at him, eyes narrowed but softer than usual. Her voice dropped to a rough whisper.
I hate you for seeing me like this. Weak. Bleeding. Letting you save me. She grabbed the front of his jacket and pulled him closer until their faces were inches apart. But I hate it more that I wanted you to.
Kai's hand rested lightly on her uninjured side. The fiery thread between them burned hot enough to feel even in the waking world.
You're not weak, he murmured. You're the only person in this city who stood with me when the whole world turned against me. That's not weakness. That's fire.
Lyra's breath hitched. For a long moment she looked like she might close the distance and kiss him. Instead she shoved his chest lightly, face flushed with a mix of pain and desire.
Go to sleep, idiot, she whispered. We have to figure out what to do tomorrow. The academy is still looking for you, and I'm not letting them take you while I'm stuck with a hole in my shoulder.
Kai stood, but before turning away he brushed a stray strand of crimson hair from her face with surprising gentleness.
Get some real rest, Lioness. I'll be here when you wake up.
Lyra muttered something that sounded like "better be" before closing her eyes again.
Kai returned to his bed, the orb of Seraphiel warm against his chest and the new abilities humming quietly in his veins.
Valoria had welcomed them back with fear and wanted posters.
But something far bigger was stirring in the shadows.
The gods were watching.
The system was evolving.
And the lioness who swore she hated him was slowly, stubbornly, burning her way deeper into his fate.
