Chapter 39 - 39: Ultimate Control

Ivan Greevs took the small black box from Fujita's hand and popped it open. Inside lay a wet cloth soaked in ether and a tiny glass vial filled with colorless liquid: hydrogen cyanide, the good old-fashioned poison.

"Head office dragged their feet for weeks before they approved this shit. Use it carefully."

"Don't worry, I know exactly how nasty this stuff is." Ivan slipped the box into his pocket.

A minute later, under Fujita's arrangement, he stepped into the Gyosei Building dressed exactly like the tactical units: helmet, full face mask, and tactical goggles.

He swept his gaze across the crowd on the first floor. His electroreception picked up nothing. No parasites here.

Gunfire was already cracking from the second floor. Thanks to Uragami's snitching, parasites were getting shredded one after another.

"Give me Hirokawa Koushi's exact location," Ivan said, pressing the Bluetooth earpiece.

"He's in the main city hall on the second floor."

"Perfect." Ivan ripped the earpiece out and tossed it aside without a second look.

Because he could sense the parasites' brain waves, he slipped past every ambush point on the second floor like it was nothing and walked straight into the spacious city hall.

The place was empty except for one man standing calmly on the speaker's platform. Hirokawa Koushi. Clean-cut face, serene eyes.

He watched Ivan approach without flinching.

Bang bang bang!

Ivan raised his rifle and blew every camera in the corners to shit.

"Fuck! Which unit is this asshole from? He just wrecked all the hall cameras!" the cops in the monitoring room yelled, pissed as hell.

"Who are you?" Hirokawa asked, surprised that Ivan's gun wasn't pointed at him.

Is this guy a parasite too? But how the hell did a parasite sneak into the police ranks?

The cops' detection gear should've caught any difference between human and parasite in a heartbeat.

"Who I am doesn't matter."

Ivan stepped right up to him, pulled out the ether-soaked cloth, and clamped it hard over Hirokawa's mouth and nose. The chemical hit fast. Hirokawa's eyes flew wide open, staring at Ivan in pure confusion, still trying to figure out why the fuck this was happening even as his body went limp and he dropped unconscious.

"Because from now on, I'm you."

Ivan reached up, pulled off the tactical helmet, and revealed a face identical to Hirokawa Koushi's. He smirked, quickly swapped into Hirokawa's clothes, and stepped up onto the speaker's platform in his place.

"Second floor, corner section, one parasite down…"

Ivan could feel the parasites' brain waves blinking out one by one. Goto's signal was still missing from the list. That monster's wave burned through the rest like a fucking sun, impossible to ignore.

"Time to move."

Goto was already on the prowl. He tore through Uragami's group in seconds, leaving bodies scattered. He stopped in front of Uragami's corpse and muttered, "Interesting. Able to tell humans and parasites apart with the naked eye. Instinct? Or some special ability?"

The dead man didn't answer because... well, he was dead.

Heavy, synchronized boot steps echoed. The tactical unit codenamed Kisaragi stormed into the city hall and sealed off every exit.

A wall of black rifle barrels pointed straight at him. Ivan stood perfectly calm behind the microphone, back straight. He cleared his throat.

"I believe your guns are meant for killing parasites. I'm just a hostage forced by those things. If I've committed any crime, it should be the court that judges me, not you." Ivan plucked a single hair from his head and held it up for everyone to see.

The tactical officers glanced at each other, fingers hovering over triggers, unsure whether to shoot.

Then the order crackled through their earpieces from Inspector Hirama: "Hold your fire. Bring him out of the building."

"Copy that, sir." Several officers moved forward to escort 'Hirokawa' away.

"He's here."

Ivan's eyes flicked toward the entrance as he spoke quietly.

Crash!

Glass shattered from the upper level of the hall. A shirtless man dropped four meters straight down, landing hard. His body was carved like a goddamn statue, every muscle packed with raw, explosive power.

Every head in the room snapped toward him.

He rose slowly and started walking straight at Ivan.

"Made up your mind yet?" he asked, voice low and steady. "You walking out… or staying?"

Ivan Greevs, still wearing Hirokawa's face, gave a small, cold smile. "Kiss my ass."

"Asshole, freeze right there!"

The words barely left the tactical officer's mouth before a flash of cold steel sliced through the air. A head flew off and bounced across the floor with a wet thud.

Seeing Ivan stay silent, Goto's face stayed blank as he said, "Got it. I'll kill everyone else first, then you can decide for yourself."

What followed was pure fucking slaughter.

The tactical cops opened up with everything they had, fingers slamming triggers, but the bullets just bounced off Goto like they were hitting steel. With every swing of his arms, the rounds ricocheted straight back into the crowd.

Goto's limbs morphed into razor-sharp blades. He carved through the men like a blender, leaving nothing but chopped-up corpses and sprays of blood painting the walls.

Ivan stood in the middle of the carnage, face completely blank. Not a flicker of emotion.

He kept every reaction locked down tight. Any slip-up right now would get him killed. From the moment he contacted Fujita, his plan had been simple: let the cops bleed Goto's stamina dry.

"Fighting really does get me excited," Goto muttered, almost cheerful.

Once every cop in the hall was dead, Goto's face twisted. Sharp fangs pushed through his gums. Four long slits ripped open across his cheeks and forehead, and four extra eyeballs popped out, scanning the entire room at once.

[Fusion Condition: Kill the parasite known as Goto.]

[After fusion, the player's control over their own body will be greatly enhanced, allowing precise manipulation of every inch of muscle and tissue. It will also strengthen willpower and raise the upper limit of the body's self-protection threshold.]

The fight was over, and so was Ivan's scan on Goto.

The unique talent didn't surprise him. Being able to perfectly control four other parasites proved the bastard had insane willpower and body mastery.

Ivan stood among the pile of bodies, watching Goto's back as he walked away. He couldn't help the quiet admiration in his head.

What a terrifying fucking body. Born purely for killing. Shame, though. Even with five parasites fused inside, he still can't fully assimilate the whole thing.

If he had one more parasite planted right in his chest… now that would be perfect.

Meanwhile, the tactical units still pushing into the building kept sending frantic reports of being attacked.

And every single message cut off after that.

"Shit… there's an extremely powerful parasite in there. It can even block bullets. All the tactical teams inside the building… they're all dead." The second Fujita got the update, he sucked in a sharp breath. A cold wave of fear crawled straight down his spine.

Ivan Greevs, still wearing Hirokawa's stolen face, allowed himself the smallest smirk. "Heh… now the real fun starts."
