Chapter 49 - Chapter 49

Both of them stopped at the same time as they reached one of the darker corners of the school hallway, once there, they turned to face eachother once more.

As Alan gazed into those dark almost pitch black eyes, he felt a shiver slowly start from the base of his neck and start heading down until the base of his spine.

'Did I get her help… or did i just trade one horror for another?' Alan thought to himself, fear slowly starting to creep up on him before he tightened his hands into fists, his nails almost breaking into his palms as he used the pain to forcibly calm himself down, stomping down onto the emotion of fear as quickly as he could, as his eyes narrowed slightly.

"I'll talk with my father, He's a doctor and he should know what to do, but honestly Alan… maybe you should just leave the matter alone, if they bother you, you can always tell me y'know? I and my family could deter them from getting close to you, even though we dont talk much with the students around here, people still don't really mess with us. Actually I got a really great Idea." Alice said softly as her lips slowly but surely curled up into a smile, that to anyone else might have made her look utterly majestic, as if she was a small pixie from one of those fantasy stories.

And yet… to Alan it looked terrifying, It wasn't that Alice or the rest of the Cullens had even done anything to make him feel this fear, it was a sort of irrational fear that he felt whenever he was close to them, it was a fear that had always been there on the background even when he hadn't known what the Cullens were, it was the reason as to why no students messed with them or tried to bully them even considering their rather unique dating and family situation.

Anyone else in their position would have been relentlessly bullied, and yet no one dared even come close to touching any of them. All the students could do was whisper and gossip rumors about them and that was it.

It was at that moment as Alan was thinking, that he realised this fact aswell, as his mind stopped for a full moment before it reignited with even further fervor than before.

'An Irrational fear… almost like how humans know to fear snakes or other predators that can kill us. Is it similar?' Alan thought to himself before shaking his head.

Alice who was looking at him, at Alan who had still yet to respond to her question and was now looking like he was deep in his thoughts and shaking his head, she raised her hand and put her palm onto his shoulder and shook him lightly, a slightly worried expression on her face, softening the previous terrifying smile to a look of pensive worry that was infinitely softer than the pervious almost predator-like expression.

"Alan? Hey? Are you okay? You're not responding." Alice questioned softly, her voice lower and warmer than before, careful not to jolt him too harshly from his thoughts.

At the sound of her voice, Alan turned towards her and released an outward sigh before giving a soft slow nod of his head as he finally spoke up, escaping out of his mind.

"Yeah, I'm fine, I was just thinking about something. But joining you at your family table? I… that feels like too much, I'm not really used to just joining others at tables, and I'm pretty sure it would be really awkward, your family doesn't even know me and they likely don't want to be bothered during lunch y'know?" Alan said as he tried to softly reject the proposition about joining them at their table during lunch whilst trying to not offend her in any way or capacity.

'Join you? And your supernatural freak family that I just realised causes instinctual fear in humans? Yeah… don't really think I'll be doing that.' Alan thought to himself as he raised his arm and scratched the back of his head awkwardly whilst he looked away from her, feigning a sort of embarrassed look.

"Bother them? You won't be bothering anyone at all. They'll be so happy to meet you, after all you're like the first friend I've made in Forks after all this time." Alice replied quickler, her voice slightly higher pitch as she quickly tried to reassure him.

"Are you really sure about that? Really. Extremely one hundred percent sure that none of them will mind. Not one of them. Don't lie to me Alice." Alan replied back instantly, just as fast as she had reacted to his soft dismissal of the idea, his voice soft yet clearly firm on the no lying part.

For a moment Alice simply looked at him, her pupils seeming to almost turn thinner for a brief flash of a moment before they returned back to normal and she released a soft sigh of exhaustion as she shook her head.

"No… I can't say that. Rosalie will likely disagree with it, and Edward too though he isn't around at the moment." Alice said in reply to his question, her tone of voice defeated as her entire posture seemed to slump slightly at the fact that Alan clearly wouldn't be joining her at the Cullen table.

That sullen look however only seemed to last for a brief second before her face exploded into excitement once more.

"Then I'll just join you at your table. We can just sit together by ourselves. That's the best Idea." Alice said, her voice almost painfully excited, and hope clearly genuinely shining in her eyes.

For a moment, Alan was stumped as he gazed at her expression, at times like these, as much as the instinctual fear wanted to act up… it was simply impossible, how can one be afraid of a girl who clearly wanted to just sit with her friend and eat lunch together with him. It was utterly and completely disarming of all the alarms that had been ringing in his head as soon as she had mentioned the idea of him joining the Cullen table.
