Charos only looked away from the man's back after he had turned to leave.
Milady leaned forward slightly on her cane, her voice full of concern. "How is Luo Geng?"
"He's holding up for now," Charos replied magnanimously. "The boy has always been resilient. He'll feel better in time."
Milady turned his words over in her mind.
"It's just a few superficial wounds, after all. He only choked on a bit of water," Charos said urbanely. "And losing the bid for Clan Leader is hardly an irreversible setback. It's only when you're dead that everything is truly over."
"You're absolutely right, Uncle," Milady replied, feeling the smile on her lips slowly fade. "That puts my mind at ease. After all, who can say what consequences the death of even the most insignificant person might have in the future? You, of all people, should know that best."
"I can assure you, sometimes," Charos said, brushing imaginary dust from his hands, "the consequences of a single death are very, very small."
