Chapter 77 - The heart inside the darkness

The Veil attacked again.

Not with claws.

Not with monsters.

With memories.

The world around Nancy shattered into silver-black fragments, and suddenly—

the forest was gone.

Kai disappeared beside her.

The pack vanished.

Silence swallowed everything.

Nancy stood alone in darkness.

"No…" she whispered immediately.

The Veil's voice echoed softly now.

Smarter.

Crueler.

THIS IS WHAT YOU TRULY ARE.

The darkness shifted.

A room appeared.

Her childhood home.

Nancy froze.

The old wooden walls.

The tiny kitchen.

The sound of rain against cracked windows.

And sitting at the table—

her mother.

Alive.

Nancy's breath caught painfully.

"…Mom?"

Her mother looked up slowly and smiled exactly the way she remembered.

Warm.

Gentle.

Real.

For one horrifying second, Nancy almost believed it.

Then the Veil spoke again.

YOU WERE ALWAYS ALONE.

The room darkened instantly.

Her mother's face twisted unnaturally.

Not monstrous.

Empty.

Like something pretending to understand love.

"You left," the Veil said through her mother's mouth.

"Everyone leaves."

Nancy stepped backward.

The pressure in her chest tightened.

Old grief clawed upward fast enough to suffocate her.

The Veil saw it immediately.

YES.

HURT ISOLATES.

FEAR ISOLATES.

LOSS ISOLATES.

More figures appeared behind her mother now.

Friends who betrayed her.

People who abandoned her.

Faces tied to every moment Nancy ever felt unwanted.

The darkness fed on every wound.

And it was strong.

Nancy's knees nearly buckled.

Maybe the Veil was right.

Maybe connection always ended in pain eventually.

Maybe losing people was inevitable.

Maybe—

"Nancy."

The voice cut through the darkness instantly.

Kai.

The illusion flickered.

Nancy turned sharply.

He wasn't there physically.

But she could still feel him through the bond.

Faint.

Distant.

Real.

"Nancy, listen to me."

The Veil roared furiously.

NO.

The shadows lunged toward her again.

But this time—

Nancy didn't look at them.

She focused on the bond instead.

Leo's stubborn loyalty.

Nyra's steady presence.

The pack standing together despite their fear.

Kai refusing to let her face anything alone.

None of it erased pain.

That wasn't what made it real.

What made it real—

was that they stayed anyway.

The silver-gold light inside Nancy pulsed softly.

The illusion around her cracked.

The Veil hissed.

CONNECTION CREATES SUFFERING.

Nancy's eyes hardened.

"Yes," she whispered.

The darkness paused.

Her voice grew steadier.

"But it also gives people something worth surviving for."

The entire illusion shattered.

The house exploded into fragments of black glass.

The Veil screamed as Nancy was thrown back into reality—

straight into Kai's arms.

He caught her instantly.

"You okay?"

Nancy looked up at him.

At the worry in his eyes.

The exhaustion.

The relief.

Real.

Not perfect.

Not painless.

Real.

Behind them, the fracture above the forest began trembling violently.

The First Alpha's expression darkened.

It's losing control.

The Veil's massive shape twisted inside the sky, unstable now.

And then—

something inside the darkness opened.

An eye.

Not metaphorically.

A real eye.

Huge.

Ancient.

Watching.

Every wolf froze instantly.

Even the First Alpha took a step back.

Nyra's voice became barely a whisper.

…That's not the Veil.

Nancy felt cold spread through her body.

Because deep inside the fracture—

something far older had just awakened.
