Chapter 3: Bound by a Signature

The city lights blurred past the window, but Elena barely noticed them.

Her hands rested tightly in her lap, fingers locked together as if letting go would make everything fall apart completely.

No.

It had already fallen apart.

This night had taken everything from her—her love, her trust, her past.

And now…

It was taking her future too.

She swallowed hard and finally turned her head slightly, stealing a glance at the man sitting beside her.

Adrian Blackwood.

Even in silence, he filled the space. Calm. Unbothered. Like none of this was unusual to him.

Like forcing someone into marriage was just another business deal.

"Where are we going?" she asked quietly.

His eyes didn't leave the tablet in his hand. "Somewhere private."

That wasn't an answer.

Elena clenched her jaw. "You said this was a contract. I want to know what I'm agreeing to."

This time, Adrian looked at her.

Really looked at her.

His gaze was sharp, unreadable… but there was something else beneath it. Something calculating.

"You'll know everything soon enough," he said.

Frustration flared inside her chest. "That's not good enough."

Silence.

Then, slowly, Adrian reached into his briefcase and pulled out a set of documents.

He handed them to her without a word.

Elena hesitated before taking them.

Her heart pounded as she looked down.

At the top of the page, bold and undeniable—

Marriage Contract Agreement

Her breath caught.

She flipped through the pages, her eyes scanning quickly, trying to make sense of everything.

Terms.

Conditions.

Rules.

Her stomach twisted.

"This… this isn't normal," she whispered.

"No," Adrian said calmly. "It's necessary."

Elena's grip tightened on the papers. "One year?" she said, her voice rising slightly. "You want me to be your wife for one year?"

"Yes."

"And after that?"

"We go our separate ways."

Like it meant nothing.

Like she meant nothing.

Her chest tightened again, but she forced herself to stay focused. "And my father?"

"He'll be released the moment we're legally married."

Legally.

The word echoed heavily in her mind.

Elena flipped another page.

More conditions.

"No public scandals… attend all events together… obey the terms of the marriage…"

Her brows furrowed. "Obey?" she repeated, looking up at him. "I'm not your property."

Adrian didn't react. "It's a formality."

"It doesn't sound like one."

Their eyes locked.

For a moment, the tension between them was thick enough to choke on.

Then Elena looked back down at the contract.

She needed to think.

Needed to breathe.

But time wasn't on her side.

It never was tonight.

Her eyes landed on another line.

The wife must fulfill her role as Mrs. Blackwood when required.

Her face heated instantly.

"What does this mean?" she asked, her voice lower now.

Adrian leaned back slightly, his expression unreadable.

"It means exactly what it says."

Her heart skipped.

"You expect me to just… pretend everything is real?" she asked.

"Yes."

"And if I don't?"

Adrian's gaze hardened slightly.

"Then the deal ends."

Her breath caught.

"And my father?" she asked carefully.

A pause.

Then—

"You already know the answer."

Cold.

Direct.

Final.

Elena looked down at the papers again, her vision blurring slightly.

This wasn't a choice.

It never had been.

It was a trap.

And she had already stepped into it.

The car slowed to a stop.

Elena looked up, startled.

They were in front of a massive building, lights glowing from every window. Guards stood at the entrance, their presence alone enough to make anyone think twice about approaching.

"Where are we?" she asked.

"My place," Adrian said simply.

Of course it was.

The driver stepped out and opened her door.

For a moment, Elena didn't move.

This was it.

The point of no return.

She could still run.

She could still say no.

But then—

Her father's face flashed in her mind.

Bruised.

Broken.

Waiting.

Her chest tightened painfully.

Slowly, she stepped out of the car.

The night air felt colder now.

Heavier.

Adrian walked ahead without looking back, as if he already knew she would follow.

And she did.

Inside, everything was quiet. Too quiet.

The kind of silence that made you feel small.

Elena's footsteps echoed softly as she walked behind him, clutching the contract tightly in her hand.

He led her into a large room.

A table sat at the center.

On it—

A pen.

And another copy of the contract.

Adrian stopped and turned to face her.

"This is your last chance," he said.

His voice wasn't threatening.

It didn't need to be.

Elena's heart pounded loudly in her ears.

"If I sign this…" she said slowly, "there's no turning back, is there?"

"No."

Her fingers trembled.

She looked down at the paper one last time.

Then at the pen.

Such a small thing.

But it held the power to change her entire life.

Her throat tightened.

"Promise me," she said, her voice breaking slightly. "Promise me you'll save him."

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"I don't break my word."

Elena searched his face for any sign of doubt.

Any hesitation.

She found none.

Just cold certainty.

And somehow…

That scared her more.

A tear slipped down her cheek as she reached for the pen.

Her hand shook.

Her heart screamed.

But she didn't stop.

She lowered the pen to the paper.

And signed.

Elena Voss.

The moment the ink touched the page—

Everything changed.

Adrian picked up the contract, glancing over her signature briefly before setting it aside.

"It's done," he said.

Just like that.

No emotion.

No hesitation.

Elena let out a shaky breath, her body suddenly feeling weak.

"Now what…?" she asked softly.

Adrian stepped closer.

Too close.

Her breath caught as his presence surrounded her.

"Now," he said, his voice lower, "you become my wife."

Her heart skipped.

Before she could react—

His hand reached out and tilted her chin up slightly, forcing her to meet his eyes.

"Try not to regret it," he added.

Her pulse raced.

Regret?

She was already drowning in it.

But something in his gaze…

Something dark…

Told her this was only the beginning.

And as she stood there, bound by ink and desperation—

Elena realized the truth.

She hadn't just signed a contract.

She had signed herself into a life she didn't understand.

A marriage she couldn't escape.

And a man…

Who might destroy her before this was over.
