Chapter 101
Pale golden light slanted through the windows of Elijah's bedroom, throwing long shadows across the floor where last night's training clothes lay in a heap. He had been awake for hours, staring at the ceiling and turning over the week behind him and the meeting waiting at noon. Daniel Blackwater. A cleared industrial building in the neutral territory between the 9th District and the north side. The fate of two gangs decided in a single afternoon.
His body was ready, his Ki core full, and his mind clearer than it had been since the fight with Jack.
He dressed in what he had chosen the night before: a soft white shirt and tailored sweatpants. Nothing flashy, nothing aggressive. It was the outfit of a man so secure in his power that he had nothing to prove.
A pale blue screen flickered open in the corner of his vision.
[Quest: A King Tests His Strength]
[Defeat Daniel Blackwater in single combat.]
[Reward: 2,000 System Points | 2,000 EXP]
Elijah smiled, a small expression that didn't reach his eyes. Daniel had been at the Advanced Knight Stage for years, while Elijah had only reached it days ago. On paper, it was a real test.
Before he could close the screen, the text shifted.
[Quest Updated]
[The system has reassessed the Little King's capabilities. Daniel Blackwater is no longer a worthy opponent for a test of strength.]
[New Objective: Claim Daniel Blackwater's territory and absorb his gang into the Azura Gang without engaging in physical combat. Demonstrate dominance through presence alone.]
[Reward: 6,000 System Points | 6,000 EXP]
[A King does not waste effort on battles already won.]
Elijah chuckled. Blunt as ever, and right as ever. Fighting Daniel would only risk injury for a man who had already lost before the first punch. There was a cleaner way.
He stopped at the mirror. The man looking back wasn't the confused, hungover one who had woken in this room weeks ago. His red eyes were sharp, his jaw set, his body lean from countless hours of training. He looked exactly like what he was: a leader who needed no armor to prove his strength.
Elijah drove the blue sports car himself, a convoy carrying the Vice Leaders and half the gang trailing behind. Kai sat in the passenger seat, his dark purple aura flickering faintly, his eyes on the road.
"You're going to walk in there and take over the Blackwater Syndicate without breaking a sweat," Kai said. "I almost feel sorry for them."
"That's the plan. Daniel is strong, but not strong enough. The gap is too wide, and he doesn't know it yet."
Kai hesitated. "And Sylvia? You'll have to marry her after this, Elijah. That was the agreement."
"I know." Elijah's eyes stayed on the road. "I'll deal with it when the time comes. Right now I need to focus."
The meeting place was a gray concrete warehouse with boarded windows. The Blackwater lot was already full, vehicles lined up in disciplined rows. Elijah parked near the entrance and walked in with Kai at his right hand, Jack at his left, and Henry, Aurora and Tristan a step behind. The Azura members who followed wore black jackets with the golden sun, bright against the concrete.
Inside, the cavernous space had been cleared of debris. The Blackwater Syndicate stood in neat rows on the far side, silver serpents coiled around swords on their jackets, their Ki senses already reaching out to measure the newcomers.
Daniel Blackwater stood at the center of his formation, broad-shouldered and hard-jawed, older-looking than his twenty-five years. His honey-colored eyes were fixed on Elijah, and his silver aura was dense and controlled. His Ki sense brushed against Elijah's, curious, probing.
Beside him stood Sylvia, nineteen, in a simple deep green dress, bouncing on her heels with a bright smile.
"Elijah! You can do this! I believe in you!"
Daniel smacked the back of her head, affectionate but firm enough to make her stumble. "You're supposed to cheer for me. I'm your brother. He's the enemy, at least until after the fight, when you marry him."
Sylvia stuck her tongue out at him, then turned back to Elijah. "Beat his ass, Elijah! Make him regret hitting me in front of everyone!"
Elijah laughed. They reminded him of himself and Amy, bickering and needling each other while bound by something deeper than any argument.
Daniel sighed and raked a hand through his dark hair. "I apologize for my sister. She's been like this since she was a child."
"Don't. It's refreshing. My sister always roots for whoever she thinks will win, even if it means rooting against me."
The two leaders walked to the center of the room, footsteps echoing, both gangs watching in silence. Elijah stopped a few feet from Daniel and let his Ki sense scan him.
[Status: Daniel Blackwater]
[Cultivation: Advanced Knight Stage (Initial) | Physical Limit: 120]
[Base Stats: Strength 61 | Agility 63 | Endurance 64 | Defense 60]
[Ki Enhancement: 50% (Wolf Hunter Breathing Technique)]
[Effective Stats: Strength 92 | Agility 95 | Endurance 96 | Defense 90]
Each of Daniel's stats had risen by a point since the last scan. He had trained hard, but the improvement was marginal. Elijah pulled up his own.
[Status: Elijah Ashford]
[Cultivation: Advanced Knight Stage (Initial) | Ki: 100% | Physical Limit: 150]
[Base Stats: Strength 60 | Agility 60 | Endurance 60 | Defense 60]
[Ki Enhancement: 100% (Zenith)]
[Effective Stats (Zenith + Flash Step + Iron Body): Strength 120 | Agility 144 | Endurance 120 | Defense 144]
Daniel's Ki sense was already scanning Elijah in return. His expression moved from confident to surprised to something close to disbelief, and his hands clenched at his sides.
-"You've broken through to the Advanced Knight Stage," he said quietly. "In just a few days."
"I have. My limit has expanded, and my stats with it. I'm not the fighter you'd have faced a week ago."
Daniel's jaw tightened. "That's remarkable, even with a powerful bloodline and a high-quality technique."
"Thank you. But the gap between us is too wide now. I respect the work you've put in, but I'll win, and I'll win easily. There's no shame in yielding before anyone gets hurt."
Daniel stared at him, then laughed. "You're confident, I'll give you that. But I've fought stronger opponents before. Strength isn't everything. Experience matters. Technique matters. So does the willingness to do whatever it takes."
Elijah sighed and let his shoulders drop. "I was afraid you'd say that. I understand. You have your pride, and your people are watching. You can't yield without a fight."
He raised his hands, not in a fighting stance but like a conductor lifting a baton. His red eyes held Daniel's, and his Ki spread outward, not to probe, but to project.
The King's Aura exploded outward.
It filled the room in an instant, heavy and absolute. The Blackwater members collapsed to their knees, hands flat on the concrete, faces white with terror. The Azura members fared better, but even they staggered, their auras flickering as they fought to stay upright. The Vice Leaders held their ground, faces tight with strain. Jack was the least affected, studying the technique with narrowed eyes, though even he shifted his weight against the pressure.
Daniel's silver aura guttered. His hands came up as if to block a blow, but there was nothing to block, only the presence of the man in front of him.
Elijah didn't stop.
He drew his grandfather's katana from his inventory, still sheathed in its black lacquer scabbard, and drove the tip into the floor. Cracks spiderwebbed across the concrete, and the impact boomed through the room like thunder. He settled into a relaxed, commanding stance, one hand resting on the hilt like a man leaning on a walking stick.
The pressure doubled, then doubled again. The weaker members of both gangs were pressed flat against the floor, as if an invisible hand held them down. The Vice Leaders stayed standing, but their faces were pale and their auras strained.
Elijah's voice carried, calm and utterly certain. "Everyone in this building, listen. If anyone can move from where they stand and reach me, I will hand my title as leader of the Azura Gang to Daniel Blackwater. But if no one can take a single step, Daniel yields, and the Blackwater Syndicate becomes part of the Azura Gang."
Silence, apart from strained breathing and the hum of the ventilation. No one moved. No one could.
Daniel's face was bloodless, his legs trembling, his jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped. He tried to lift his foot. His body wouldn't answer. No amount of willpower could overcome the weight pressing down on him.
On her knees, Sylvia stared at Elijah with awe and terror, not resisting, her lips moving in a silent prayer.
Elijah held the aura for a full minute, long enough for everyone to understand what they faced. Then he withdrew it in stages until the weaker members could breathe and the stronger ones could lift their heads.
Daniel caught himself on one knee, one hand on the concrete, his silver aura weak and uncertain.
"Yield," Elijah said, quiet but firm. "I don't want to hurt you, Daniel, and I don't want to humiliate you in front of your people. But I will if I have to. You know you can't beat me. End this peacefully."
Daniel's chest heaved. For a long moment he was silent. Then he lowered his head and let out a long breath.
"I yield," he said, barely above a whisper. "The Blackwater Syndicate is yours. I am yours. My people are yours."
The room erupted, Blackwater members shouting and demanding answers, until Daniel raised a hand and the noise died. He pushed himself to his feet on unsteady legs and looked at Elijah with defeat and respect in equal measure.
Elijah nodded. Across the room the Vice Leaders were pale and wide-eyed, but smiling, and Kai was already pulling out his phone to message the half of the gang guarding home territory.
The system screen opened in the corner of Elijah's vision.
[Quest Complete: A King Tests His Strength]
[Reward: 6,000 System Points | 6,000 EXP]
[System Points: 200 → 6,200]
[Experience: Level 5 (74%) → Level 5 (98%)]
Close to the next level, but not over the edge. Daniel had yielded before any real combat, so the fight itself had given him nothing. He closed the screen. There would be time to plan later. For now, he had a gang to absorb and a wedding to arrange.
Sylvia rushed him, dress swirling, and threw her arms around his neck with surprising strength, burying her face in his shoulder with a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob.
"I knew you could do it," she said into his shirt. "I told him so many times. He just kept training and training, thinking he could close the gap, but I knew he couldn't."
Elijah stood still, arms at his sides, neither returning the hug nor pulling away. Her joy was real, and he wouldn't crush it in front of her brother and her people.
Daniel walked over, shaking his head. "Sylvia, let the man breathe. You'll suffocate him before we even discuss the terms of our surrender."
She pulled back, flushed and grinning. "Sorry. I'm just so happy. I've been waiting for this for so long."
Elijah extended his hand to Daniel, formal but friendly. "You made the right choice. I know it doesn't feel that way now. Your people will be safe with us, your territory protected, and your sister treated with the respect she deserves."
Daniel took it, his grip firm. "I hope you're right, Elijah. For all our sakes."
