Chapter 55 - Chapter 53 — The Father Who Crossed an Ocean

Marco Rossi arrived in Tokyo on a Thursday with one suitcase, a phone full of photos his daughter had sent him over six years that he had looked at more times than he would admit, and the specific protective energy of a father who had crossed an ocean for one purpose.

He had not come for the city.

He had toured Tokyo exactly once, briefly, eight years ago, for one of Elena's early showcases. He remembered it as loud and tall and full of people who did not know how to make proper coffee, an opinion he had not revised.

He had come because his daughter — his only child, his Elena, who had sold out stadiums and performed for presidents and had never once, in six years, sounded the way she sounded on their last phone call — had said: "Papa, there's someone I want you to meet."

And then: "I've never said that before. About anyone."

He had booked the flight that evening.

Elena met him at the airport.
