Chapter 3: The Day He Chose Her Anyway

The night Meera told him the truth…

Aarav didn't sleep.

Not even for a minute.

He lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying every word she had said.

"I don't know how long I have…"

"Don't fall in love with me…"

But the more he thought about it, the clearer one thing became—

He already had.

Morning came slowly.

The sunlight entered his room, but it didn't feel warm.

Everything felt… heavy.

For the first time, Aarav realized something important—

Life wasn't just about time.

It was about who you spend that time with.

And somehow, in just a few days, Meera had become that person.

By afternoon, Aarav made a decision.

Not a small one.

Not something temporary.

A real decision.

He grabbed his jacket and walked out of his house with one thought in his mind—

I'm not running away.

The café was quieter than usual.

Aarav walked in, his eyes instantly searching for her.

But she wasn't there.

He felt a small panic.

What if she doesn't come again?

He waited.

One hour.

Two hours.

Still nothing.

Just when he was about to leave—

The door opened.

And there she was.

Meera.

But today… she looked even weaker.

Her steps were slow.

Her breathing slightly uneven.

But she still smiled when she saw him.

"Still waiting?" she asked softly.

Aarav didn't smile back this time.

He walked straight to her.

Without saying a word—

He held her hand.

Meera froze.

Her eyes widened in surprise.

"Aarav… what are you doing?"

His grip tightened slightly—not forceful, but firm.

"I made a decision."

She looked confused. "What decision?"

Aarav looked straight into her eyes.

"I'm not leaving."

Her heart skipped.

"Aarav… don't do this."

"I already did," he replied.

"You don't understand—"

"I do," he interrupted. "You're sick. You don't know how much time you have. You're scared I'll get hurt."

Meera's eyes filled with emotion.

"Then why…?" she whispered.

"Because I'd rather have a short time with you… than a lifetime without you."

The words hit her deeply.

Too deeply.

Tears formed in her eyes again—but this time, she didn't hide them.

"You're making this harder," she said.

Aarav shook his head. "No. I'm making it honest."

They stood there for a moment.

In the middle of a quiet café.

Two people.

One afraid to lose.

One afraid to stay.

Slowly, Meera pulled her hand back.

But not completely.

Just enough to create space.

"Aarav… what if I disappear tomorrow?"

"Then I'll remember today," he said without hesitation.

"What if I hurt you?"

"You already matter to me. That risk is gone."

"What if I leave you alone?"

Aarav smiled faintly. "You already found me when I was alone."

That broke her.

Completely.

She looked away, trying to control her emotions.

But it was useless.

"You don't give up, do you?" she asked softly.

Aarav shook his head. "Not when it matters."

Silence.

Then…

Meera took a deep breath.

And stepped closer.

Closer than before.

"So what are you saying?" she asked.

Aarav didn't look away this time.

"I'm saying… I choose you."

Her heartbeat raced.

No one had ever said that to her like this.

Not with this kind of certainty.

Not knowing everything.

Not accepting everything.

"You're crazy," she whispered.

Aarav smiled slightly. "Maybe."

Then something unexpected happened.

Meera laughed.

A real laugh.

Not the soft, sad one.

But a genuine, bright laugh.

The kind that made everything feel lighter.

"You're really choosing a girl who might leave anytime?" she asked.

Aarav nodded. "Yes."

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said quietly—

"Then I'll make sure the time you spend with me… is worth it."

That was the moment everything changed.

Not love.

Not yet.

But something stronger than fear.

Something braver than pain.

Hope.

That day, they didn't sit inside the café.

Instead, they walked outside.

The rain had stopped.

The sky was clear.

For once.

They walked slowly through the streets.

Talking about small things.

Simple things.

Like favorite foods.

Childhood memories.

Dreams they never told anyone.

Aarav learned that Meera always wanted to travel.

To see mountains.

To feel snow.

To watch sunsets from places far away.

"But I guess… I'll settle for this city," she said with a soft smile.

Aarav looked at her.

"No."

She blinked. "No?"

"You won't settle."

She raised an eyebrow. "Oh really? And how are you planning that?"

Aarav smiled.

"Just watch me."

For the first time in a long time—

Meera felt something she thought she had lost.

Excitement.

As the sun began to set, they stopped at a quiet spot.

The sky turned orange and pink.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

Meera looked at the sky.

"It's pretty," she said softly.

Aarav looked at her instead.

"Yeah… it is."

She noticed.

And smiled.

But this time—

Her smile didn't hide pain.

It held something else.

Something new.

"Thank you," she said suddenly.

"For what?"

"For not leaving."

Aarav shook his head gently.

"I told you… I'm not going anywhere."

She looked at him again.

And for the first time—

She believed him.

But somewhere deep inside…

A small fear still remained.

Because love…

Even when beautiful…

Can be painfully temporary.
