Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Syndicate Boss

The morning sun hit the golden tiles of the Wang Estate—no, the Syndicate Estate—with a clarity that felt like a new era.

Su Chen sat behind a desk of dark ironwood, watching a soft red glow emanate from his vision. While the rest of the Capital was waking up to the news that their most powerful merchant family had been liquidated overnight, Su Chen was staring at a metamorphosis.

[Class Evolution Complete!] [Current Class: Syndicate Boss (Tier 1)] [New Passive: 'The Iron Ledger' – All subordinates within your influence gain a 15% efficiency boost and a 20% resistance to psychological manipulation/bribery.] [New Active Skill: 'Loyalty Matrix' – Allows the Host to view a numerical value of devotion for any individual within 50 meters.]

He flicked his gaze toward the door. Han Jing was walking in, carrying a stack of fresh reports. Above the scholar's head, a green number pulsed: [Loyalty: 98/100].

"Master," Han Jing said, his voice brimming with a mix of awe and exhaustion. "The Magistrate's office has sent three messengers in the last hour. They aren't demanding an audience anymore. They are asking for 'clarification' on how the Syndicate plans to manage the salt tax. They are terrified, Master."

"Let them simmer," Su Chen replied. "A terrified bureaucrat is an obedient one. Have we secured the ships?"

"Yes. Seven heavy cargo vessels. They've been scrubbed of the Wang family crest and replaced with our emblem." Han Jing hesitated. "But Master... we are loading 100,000 crates of yellow salt. Even the dockworkers are whispering that we are mad. They say we are taking 'trash' to the frozen North."

Su Chen stood up and walked to a large map pinned to the wall. His finger traced the Great River up toward the jagged peaks of the Northern Border.

"To a man in a desert, a cup of water is worth more than a bar of gold, Han Jing. The Northern Barbarians have millions of horses and mountains of iron, but their land is salt-starved. To them, this 'trash' is the difference between their livestock living or dying."

Su Chen turned his attention back to the [System Shop]. He had 10,000 points—the biggest "paycheck" he'd ever received.

[Tier 2 Shop Unlocked: Industrial & Military Warfare]

He bypassed the luxury goods. He didn't need more Snowflake Salt. He needed a way to ensure that when he met the Barbarian Warlords, they didn't just decide to kill him and take the salt for free.

He found exactly what he was looking for.

[Blueprint: Zhuge Repeating Crossbow (Syndicate Modification)] Cost: 4,000 SP Description: A rapid-fire, magazine-fed crossbow. Modified with high-tension springs and steel-tipped bolts. Fires 10 bolts in 15 seconds. Simple enough for a common sailor to use, deadly enough to pierce light cavalry armor.

[Blueprint: Cold-Weather Logistic Rations (High Calorie)] Cost: 2,000 SP Description: Dense, nutrient-packed bars that prevent fatigue and frostbite in extreme temperatures. Ensures your men stay at 100% combat effectiveness while the enemy is shivering.

"Purchase," Su Chen commanded.

[Total SP Remaining: 4,000]

He looked at Han Jing. "Take these blueprints to our new ironworks. I want two hundred of these crossbows manufactured by the time the tide turns this evening. Equip every sailor on our ships. And Han Jing?"

"Yes, Master?"

"Tell General Yan to meet me at the docks. He's about to see if his 'Blood Demon' title still holds weight in the tundra."

The Docks. Midnight.

The seven ships sat low in the water, their hulls creaking under the weight of the massive salt hoard.

General Yan Kuo stood on the deck of the flagship, the Black Ledger. He was wearing a new set of fur-lined heavy armor, his guandao strapped to his back. He watched as crates of the new repeating crossbows were hoisted into the hold.

"The North is a graveyard for Southerners, Boss," Yan said as Su Chen stepped onto the deck. "The Iron Tusk tribe doesn't care about silver, and they don't care about Imperial laws. They respect two things: strength and survival."

Su Chen looked out at the dark water. For the first time since his reincarnation, he felt the true weight of the gamble. He wasn't just manipulating a local market anymore. He was playing a game of international geopolitics.

"Then we'll give them both, Yan," Su Chen said.

[System Notification: Main Quest Updated!] [Quest: The Northern Barter] [Objective: Exchange the 100,000 crates of salt for 5,000 Grade-A Warhorses.] [Reward: Unlock 'Black Powder' Tech Tree & 20,000 SP.]

"Cast off," Su Chen ordered.

The ships began to glide away from the Capital, leaving the lights of the city behind. Behind them, the Wang Family was a memory. Ahead of them, a frozen wasteland and a nation of warriors awaited.

The Syndicate was no longer just a merchant guild. It was an army in the making.
