Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Night Before

The moon was a sharp silver sliver over the Mediterranean, casting a ghostly glow across the bedroom of the San Remo villa. Tomorrow, they would board a private jet at a clandestine airstrip and disappear into the humid heat of Brazil. The silence of the house was eerie, broken only by the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the cliffs below.

‎Dante sat on the edge of the bed, his back to Sienna. He was cleaning his Beretta, the mechanical *click-clack* of the slide providing a cold soundtrack to the evening.

‎"Put the gun away, Dante," Sienna said softly. She was sitting by the vanity, brushing her hair. "Just for tonight. Can we pretend we're just two people who met in a different life?"

‎Dante paused, his broad shoulders tensing. He set the weapon on the nightstand and turned around. His eyes were dark, shadowed by a fatigue that went deeper than bone. "In a different life, Sienna, I would have found you at a cafe in Rome. I would have bought you a drink, asked for your name, and spent the rest of my life trying to earn a smile from you."

‎Sienna stood up and walked over to him, the silk of her robe fluttering around her ankles. She sat between his knees, looking up at him. "And in that life, would you still be this possessive?"

‎Dante's hands moved to her waist, his fingers curling into the silk. "In every life, I would be this way about you. It's not just the war. It's you. You're like a drug I didn't know I was addicted to until I had a taste."

‎He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. "Are you scared? About tomorrow?"

‎"I'm scared of the silence," she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. "I've lived with the sound of sirens and shouting my whole life. I don't know who I am without the Cavallo name hanging over me like a noose."

‎"You're Sienna Moretti," Dante growled, his voice vibrating in his chest. "That's all you need to be. My wife. My queen. The woman who brought a monster to his knees."

‎"Is that what I did?" she teased gently, though her eyes were shining with tears.

‎"Look at me," he commanded, his grip tightening. "I'm walking away from everything I've ever known. My father's legacy, the power, the respect. I'm giving it all up because the thought of you being in danger for one more second makes my blood turn to ash. You didn't just bring me to my knees, Sienna. You saved my fucking soul."

‎Sienna reached up, her fingers tracing the jagged scar on his shoulder. "Then show me. Show me that we're real. That this isn't just a dream before the nightmare starts again."

‎Dante didn't need another word. He stood up, lifting her with him, and pressed her back against the cool sheets of the bed. The air in the room shifted, turning heavy and electric. Every touch was frantic, fueled by the knowledge that tomorrow was a gamble they might not win.

‎"I love you," she gasped as his mouth found the sensitive skin of her throat.

‎Dante stiffened for a fraction of a second. It was the first time she had said it. He pulled back, his eyes searching hers with a desperate, burning intensity. "Say it again."

‎"I love you, Dante Moretti. I love the man you are when the guns are put away. I love the way you look at me like I'm the only thing in the world that matters."

‎"You *are* the only thing that matters," he groaned, his voice breaking. "I'll kill anyone who tries to take this from us. I'll burn the world down to keep you in my arms."

‎They moved together in a feverish dance, a desperate attempt to memorize the texture of each other's skin and the sound of each other's breath. It was obsessive, rough, and deeply personal. Every kiss was a vow; every groan was a prayer.

‎Later, as they lay entangled in the dark, the sweat cooling on their skin, Dante stared at the ceiling. "The jet is fueled. Marco has the documents. At dawn, we leave."

‎Sienna curled into his side, her head resting on his chest. "I'm ready, Dante. I've never been more ready for anything in my life."

‎"Good," he whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Close your eyes, *cara*. The next time you wake up, we'll be halfway to our new life."

‎Sienna closed her eyes, listening to the steady, powerful thud of his heart. She felt safe. For the first time in her life, she felt truly, deeply safe.

‎Outside, the first hint of dawn began to grey the horizon. And miles away, a fleet of black SUVs began their silent ascent up the winding cliffside road, their headlights extinguished, their intent lethal.

‎The night before the escape was over. The day of the betrayal had begun.
