Chapter 27 - CHAPTER 27:The Very Normal Sailing

The sea stayed open and empty for days.

No islands on the horizon.

No ships crossing their path.

Only wind and water.

Kevin kept the ship steady at a consistent course.

Carina had settled into the rhythm of sea travel more naturally now.

Less confusion.

More observation.

"…We've been moving for a while."

Carina stretched slightly, sitting near the mast.

Her eyes scanned the horizon lazily.

Kevin replied without turning.

"…Yes."

No change in direction meant no reason to stop.

Supplies were still stable.

But slowly decreasing as expected.

Nothing critical yet.

Kevin checked mentally.

"…One more stop required soon."

Carina tilted her head.

"…Another island?"

Kevin nodded slightly.

"…Yes."

The sea remained calm that day.

Too calm again.

Kevin noticed it but didn't react.

Calm seas were not dangerous by themselves.

But they always meant distance before something changed.

By the third day—

Something finally appeared.

Not land yet.

But movement on the horizon.

A ship.

Carina stood up immediately.

"…Another one?"

Kevin narrowed his eyes.

"…Yes."

But this one was different.

It wasn't rushing.

It wasn't chasing.

It was moving in parallel direction.

Same route.

Different distance.

"…Merchant convoy."

Carina blinked.

"…Convoy?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Multiple ships traveling together."

As they got closer—

More detail appeared.

Three ships.

One large cargo vessel.

Two smaller escort ships.

Not pirates.

Not alone travelers.

Organized transport.

Carina watched carefully.

"…They look important."

Kevin replied.

"…They protect something valuable."

The convoy noticed them.

But did not react aggressively.

Only adjusted spacing slightly.

No cannons.

No warning shots.

Just awareness.

One of the escort ships signaled.

A flag gesture.

Neutral.

Not hostile.

Kevin didn't respond.

He kept distance.

"…We pass safely if we don't interfere."

Carina leaned slightly forward.

"…And if we do interfere?"

Kevin answered calmly.

"…They respond."

That was enough explanation.

The convoy slowly passed alongside them.

Close enough to see details.

Crates stacked on decks.

Armed guards watching carefully.

Navigation logs being checked.

Carina observed quietly.

"…So many resources."

Kevin nodded slightly.

"…Trade routes carry everything."

As the ships crossed paths—

One guard on the convoy briefly looked toward their ship.

Then spoke to another.

Too quiet to hear clearly.

But Kevin noticed.

Not the words.

The attention.

"…They're marking us."

Carina frowned.

"…Is that bad?"

Kevin replied.

"…It means they remember us."

The convoy continued forward without incident.

Slowly disappearing behind them.

Silence returned to the sea again.

Carina sat back down.

"…So we just passed something important?"

Kevin answered.

"…Yes."

She frowned slightly.

"…And we got nothing from it?"

Kevin replied simply.

"…We got passage."

Hours later—

Carina spoke again.

"…Do people always travel like this? With so much distance between everything?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Yes."

She looked at the horizon.

"…That feels empty."

Kevin answered.

"…It is."

The wind shifted slightly in the evening.

Kevin adjusted course.

Smooth correction.

Carina watched him for a while.

Then spoke quietly.

"…You don't get bored?"

Kevin paused briefly.

Then answered.

"…No."

"…Why not?"

Kevin looked at the sea.

"…Because something always changes eventually."

The ship continued forward.

Convoy long gone.

Sea open again.

But now—

Their presence had been noticed by more than just waves.

Even if no danger had come yet.

Carina leaned back.

"…I think I'm starting to understand this life."

Kevin replied.

"…Good."

And the ship kept moving.

Forward.

Always forward.
