ELARA~
I was seated on the livingroom couch eyes glued to the television. The only sound that could be heard throughout the entire house.
Every news station had been covering the explosion since morning, replaying the same footage over and over until even the sound of reporters' voices started making my head ache.
I curled beneath the blanket on the couch, one of the guards lingering somewhere outside while another stayed near the kitchen pretending not to watch me.
Then Chris appeared on screen. My body stiffened instantly.
He stood in front of the courthouse surrounded by reporters and cameras, looking nowhere near as composed as he usually did.
His tie was slightly crooked. Dark circles sat beneath his eyes. And for the first time since I'd met him… he looked afraid.
"Mr. Maxwell! Why was the case suddenly dropped?"
"Was there a private settlement?"
"Are the allegations against Miss Jones false?"
"Did the recent attack influence your decision?"
