Chapter 109 - Chapter 109 - Conceptualizing the Setting

"'Forest of Shadows' — A forest steeped in dark Gothic aesthetics. All plant life has been swallowed by shadows and lost every trace of vitality. The Forest of Shadows serves as the boundary between the human world and the world of darkness. Numerous cruel Grimm beasts that thirst for blood lurk within, hiding in the shadows as they gaze greedily upon every passing prey."

"'Realm of the Half-Dead' — A kingdom swallowed by descending darkness several hundred years ago. Its former residents were likewise corrupted by darkness and transformed into 'Half-Dead Ones.' Only a small number of humanity's upper echelon know of this kingdom struggling between darkness and light."

"'Crystal Abyss' — One of the necessary paths leading toward the ruined cathedral. The environment consists of a vast abyss covered in gigantic crystals. The faint glow emitted by crystal butterflies refracts through the crystals, making the place appear breathtakingly beautiful. However, the Crystal Abyss is filled with natural death traps. To pass through it safely, one must understand the appearance patterns of the 'Invisible Paths.'"

"'Ashfog Canyon' — A peculiar canyon formed by volcanic ash mist sedimentation. Because hunters cannot clearly distinguish the terrain through the drifting gray fog around their feet, many hunters have stepped into empty air and been swallowed by the ash mist—or rather, fallen into bottomless underground fissures."

"'Infernal Lava Lake' — A lake of magma said to be inhabited by a colossal lava beast. It constantly transports lava into the underground world. Once the lava beast dies, all magma within the lake will cool and solidify."

"'Boundary of Darkness' — To step into this place is to enter the world of darkness itself. Legend says that a fallen hero—'Marcus'—guards this boundary, preventing any living being from advancing further. When travelers set foot here and ignore warnings to continue forward, the fallen hero manifests from the darkness itself, using his former armor as a weapon to drive away those seeking baptism by darkness."

"'Ruined Cathedral Beneath the Earth' — The only structure—or perhaps the only remaining substance—deep within the Boundary of Darkness. Once a flourishing cathedral devoted to the power of the 'Spring Maiden,' before the kingdom was consumed by darkness. The invasion of darkness seems to have corrupted all its original believers, or perhaps caused them to guard the Spring Maiden's power in another form. They slaughter every living creature that enters from the outside, whether Grimm or human."

"'World Within the Well' — An inner structure hidden inside the cathedral. Once the altar devoted to the Spring Maiden, it has now sunk into the underground darkness."

Eight massive scenes with entirely different styles materialized within Kamiyā Yuu's consciousness space. They slowly connected, forming a vast and strange 3D map that felt completely real.

As Kamiyā Yuu's thoughts swept across the map, every rough detail began to refine and solidify.

The withered trees of the Forest of Shadows twisted together unnaturally.

Buildings within the Realm of the Half-Dead gradually aged and collapsed, becoming even more rotten and decayed.

Within the Crystal Abyss, the numerous 'Invisible Paths' flickered faintly beneath refracted light.

Four-fifths of Ashfog Canyon's ground became hollowed out.

Within Infernal Lava Lake, a hideous giant beast covered in flowing magma gradually took shape.

At the Boundary of Darkness, the aura of darkness itself supported scattered armor pieces on the ground, condensing them into a vaguely humanoid knight.

Within the ruined underground cathedral, black knights patrolled everywhere while ghostly nuns with vacant expressions passed through the walls.

As for the World Within the Well—

It resembled a dark version of Kamiyā Yuu's own pure-white consciousness world.

After falling through the giant well opening into its depths, darkness became everything there, making it impossible for people to distinguish direction. Strangely enough, despite this darkness, vision itself did not seem impaired, allowing people to see certain abnormal objects moving within the blackness.

No one knew how much time he had spent constructing these scenes.

Once all the environments were complete, Kamiyā Yuu stood high above the sky, overlooking everything below. With tired eyes, he nodded to himself.

"The planned runtime for the movie is one hundred and twenty minutes. I can barely fit the plot involving all eight locations into that timeframe, especially since some sections are only meant for scene transitions."

This was a newly restructured storyline built upon the world setting of 'RWBY.'

More rigorous.

Darker.

Better suited to expressing the glimmer of light struggling within darkness.

Roughly three hundred years ago, darkness swallowed half the territory of Vale, one of the four great kingdoms of humanity, sparking a prolonged and world-shaking war between human hunters and the Grimm.

Even today, Beacon Academy—the school responsible for training hunters—remained stationed outside the Forest of Shadows. It used the relatively weaker Grimm around the outer perimeter to train hunter students while powerful hunter instructors monitored every movement along the Boundary of Darkness.

Until one day, Headmaster Ozpin sensed an abnormal disturbance within the darkness—

The black fog was advancing.

If it were not stopped, then not only Beacon Academy but the remaining half of Vale might also be devoured.

Understanding the cause behind these changes, Professor Ozpin gathered all the hunters within Vale and assigned them an extremely important mission—

Reclaim the power of the 'Spring Maiden.'

Only then could the advancing darkness be halted.

However, the Spring Maiden's power had already been buried forever within the Boundary of Darkness during the descent of darkness three hundred years ago.

Because of this, the hunters would have to risk their lives traveling to the Spring Maiden's altar within the World Inside the Well.

With the situation critical, hunters were forced to form teams and venture together into the unknown lands.

Ruby Rose — A graduate of Signal Academy who joined this hunter expedition out of temporary interest.

Yang — Participating in accordance with the power contract she signed with the 'Summer Maiden — Phoenix.' She also hoped to find her true mother, who was likewise a hunter.

Blake — Having left the White Fang organization behind, she joined the expedition in search of answers within her heart.

Weiss Schnee — In a sense, a noble princess who had run away from home. She participated in order to prove her own abilities and earn the title of hero.

"The background and general setting are OK, but how should the actual plot be structured to make it better?"

Kamiyā Yuu remained deep in thought.

This was the world setting and environmental concept behind the 'RWBY' movie version.

Based on these alone, it wasn't difficult to guess the general direction of the story. It followed the classic route of heroes overcoming countless obstacles before finally defeating the great demon king.

Whether the story could truly feel refreshing depended entirely on how Kamiyā Yuu refined and polished the detailed plot.

It didn't need to be overly complicated, nor deeply philosophical.

It only needed to properly showcase the unique charm of this world, express the themes it wished to convey, and provide viewers with satisfaction that exceeded expectations.

'Castle in the Sky,' 'Spirited Away,' 'Princess Mononoke,' 'Zootopia,' 'WALL-E,' 'Kung Fu Panda'···

Whether Eastern or Western animated films, once one set aside their unique artistic styles and personal methods of expression, the path they followed was fundamentally the same.
