Chapter 42 - Flawed Perfection

The air tightened again.

The unit didn't wait.

It moved.

Faster than before.

Sharper.

More aggressive.

Aarav stepped forward.

Intercepted.

Their clash echoed again—

Clean.

Precise.

But now—

Different.

"…It's prioritizing you," Mira said.

"…I noticed."

The unit ignored her completely.

Every movement—

Every attack—

Focused on Aarav.

"…Good," Aarav muttered.

"…That makes this easier."

Mira frowned.

"…How?"

"…Because now it's predictable."

Silence.

Then—

"…You're serious?"

"…Watch."

The unit attacked again.

Direct.

Perfect.

Aarav stepped slightly to the side.

Not reacting—

Positioning.

The strike passed.

Exactly where he expected.

"…Now," he said.

Mira moved instantly.

A burst of energy shot forward—

Not at the unit—

But at the space beside it.

The air distorted.

The unit shifted to correct—

And for the first time—

Its movement overlapped.

A small delay.

A small error.

"…There it is," Aarav said.

He stepped in.

Struck.

Clean.

Direct.

The unit staggered—

Just slightly.

"…It made a mistake," Mira whispered.

"…No," Aarav replied.

"…We forced one."

The unit stabilized immediately.

Its posture reset.

Its presence sharpened.

"…It's adapting," Mira said.

"…Of course it is."

Aarav exhaled slowly.

"…Then we don't give it time."

The unit moved again.

Faster.

More precise.

But now—

Aarav didn't fall behind.

He moved first.

Not reacting.

Acting.

"…Left," he said.

Mira followed instantly.

Her attack hit the space—

The unit shifted—

Aarav intercepted.

Another strike landed.

"…Right."

Another move.

Another forced correction.

Another opening.

The rhythm changed.

Not perfect.

Not chaotic.

But—

Broken.

The system flickered violently.

"…It doesn't like this," Mira said.

"…Good."

Aarav stepped forward again.

"…Because it can't fix everything at once."

The unit stopped.

Just for a moment.

Its posture shifted.

More rigid.

More focused.

[ P R I O R I T Y O V E R R I D E ]

"…That's not good," Mira said.

"…No," Aarav replied.

"…That's dangerous."

The unit moved.

Instantly.

No delay.

No correction.

Just—

Execution.

The attack came too fast.

Aarav barely reacted.

The hit landed.

Harder than before.

He was pushed back.

More than before.

"…It's sacrificing stability," he muttered.

"…For efficiency."

Mira's eyes widened.

"…That means—"

"…It'll finish this fast."

The unit appeared again.

Right in front of him.

Final strike incoming.

Aarav didn't move.

Not immediately.

He watched.

Just for a moment longer.

"…Now."

Mira unleashed everything.

A full burst of energy—

Wide.

Uncontrolled.

Chaotic.

The opposite of the unit.

The unit reacted instantly.

Tried to correct.

Tried to stabilize.

But—

There was too much.

Too many variables.

That moment—

Was enough.

Aarav moved.

Not fast.

Not strong.

But—

Right.

He stepped through the attack.

Closed the distance.

And struck.

A direct hit.

Centered.

Clean.

The unit froze.

For a moment.

Then—

Cracked.

The space around it distorted.

Its form flickered.

Unstable.

"…We did it," Mira whispered.

"…Not yet."

The unit collapsed.

Not destroyed—

But broken.

Its form dissolving slowly.

Then—

Gone.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Real.

Mira exhaled.

"…That was close."

"…Yeah."

Aarav looked at the space where it disappeared.

"…Too close."

The screen flickered again.

Different this time.

Aarav smiled faintly.

"…So it learns."

Mira looked at him.

"…That's not reassuring."

"…It's not supposed to be."

Because next time—

It wouldn't come alone.
