Chapter 252 - Chapter Two Hundred Fifty-Two: The Letter

Chapter Two Hundred Fifty-Two: The Letter

The discovery happened by accident, as most discoveries did in the Blackwood family.

Lina was exploring the attic again, as she often did, searching for old photographs and forgotten treasures. The attic was dusty and cluttered, filled with boxes that had not been opened in decades. She loved the attic. It felt like a museum of her family's history, a place where the past was still alive.

She found the letter tucked inside an old book, a collection of poetry that had belonged to the first Lina. The envelope was yellowed with age, the handwriting faded, the seal broken.

Lina pulled out the letter and unfolded it.

Dear Lina,

If you're reading this, I'm gone. Or you're gone. Or we're both gone.

I'm writing because I need to tell you something. Something I should have told you years ago. Something I was too afraid to say.

The night you fell—the night of the coma—I was there.

I saw everything.

I saw Chloe push you. I saw Ryan stand by and watch. I saw your mother hiding in the shadows.

But I also saw something else. Something no one else knows.

Chloe didn't push you because she hated you. Chloe pushed you because Ryan threatened her. He said if she didn't do it, he would kill her. He would kill her family. He would make sure she never saw her daughter again.

I have proof.

I recorded him. The night before the coma. I have a recording of him threatening Chloe. I have a recording of him planning everything.

I kept it hidden. I was afraid. I thought if I came forward, he would come after me.

But I can't keep it anymore.

The recording is in a safe deposit box at the bank on Fifth Street. The key is in the attic, inside a small wooden box, under a pile of old photographs.

I'm sorry, Lina. I'm sorry I didn't come forward sooner. I'm sorry I let you suffer.

—Margaret

Lina read the letter three times.

Then she carried it downstairs and found Lily in the garden.

"Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandma," Lina said, her voice shaking. "I found something."

---

Lily read the letter.

Her hands were trembling. Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Margaret knew," Lily said. "She had proof. She had a recording."

Lina nodded. "She did."

Lily looked at her. "Why didn't she come forward?"

Lina thought about the question. "She was afraid. She thought Ryan would come after her."

Lily was quiet for a moment. "We need to find that recording."

---

The family gathered that night.

The penthouse was filled with people. Every generation was there, from the oldest to the youngest. The rooms were crowded with whispers and questions, the air thick with anticipation.

Lily stood at the front of the room, the letter in her hands.

"I have something to tell you," she said.

The room quieted.

She told them about the letter. About the recording. About Margaret's confession.

When she finished, the room was silent.

Then Grace stood up. She was one hundred years old now, frail but still fierce.

"Margaret had proof," Grace said. "Proof that Ryan threatened Chloe. Proof that Chloe was a victim too."

Lily nodded. "She did."

Grace's eyes filled with tears. "We need to find that recording."

---

Lina went to the attic.

She found the small wooden box exactly where the letter said it would be—under a pile of old photographs, hidden in the corner.

Inside was a key.

Lina held it in her palm.

"It's real," she whispered.

Lily put her arm around her. "It's real."

---

The bank on Fifth Street was still there, though it had changed over the decades. The marble floors were worn, the tellers were new, but the safe deposit boxes were the same.

Lina presented the key. The bank manager led her and Lily to a small room, where a metal box sat on a table.

Lina inserted the key.

She turned it.

The box opened.

Inside was a small tape recorder and a single cassette tape.

Lina's hands were shaking.

She handed the tape to Lily.

Lily looked at it for a long time.

"Should we listen to it?" she asked.

Lina nodded. "We need to know the truth."

---

They listened to the recording in the living room, the family gathered around.

Ryan's voice came through the speaker, cold and cruel.

"You're going to do it, Chloe. You're going to push her down the stairs. And if you don't, I'll kill you. I'll kill your daughter. I'll make sure you never see her again."

Chloe's voice was small, terrified.

"I can't. Please. I can't."

"You can. And you will. Or else."

The recording ended.

The room was silent.

Then Grace spoke.

"She was a victim too," Grace said. "Chloe was a victim too."

Lily nodded. "She was."

---

Lina wrote a new chapter for her book.

She wrote about the recording. About Ryan's threats. About Chloe's fear.

She wrote about forgiveness.

When she finished, she read it to Margaret.

Margaret cried.

"It's beautiful," she said.

Lina shook her head. "It's the truth."

Margaret pulled her into her arms. "That's the same thing."

---

That night, Lina sat in the garden with Lily.

The stars were out, scattered across the sky like tiny diamonds. The air was cool and quiet. The city hummed in the distance.

"Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandma," Lina said, "do you think Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandma knows the truth now?"

Lily looked up at the sky. "I know she does."

Lina pointed to a bright star. "Is that her?"

Lily nodded. "That's her."

Lina stared at the star for a long time. "Hi, Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandma," she whispered. "We found the recording. We know the truth. Chloe was a victim too."

The star twinkled.

Lina gasped. "She blinked at me!"

Lily smiled. "She's saying she's proud of you."
