Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: First Build

He nearly ran the first growth cycle Tuesday morning before work and stopped himself with his hand already on the furnace controller, because some small, careful part of his brain had finally caught up to a gap the rest of him had walked straight past all weekend.

He had no silicon.

The schematic behind his eyes was complete down to the decimal point on every parameter that mattered — furnace temperature, gas flow rate, the two-percent vinylene carbonate, the forty-nanometer gold particles now sitting in a dropper bottle on the workbench. It had never once, in seventy days of patient accumulation, told him that a silicon nanowire anode required an actual source of silicon vapor to grow from, because the schematic assumed, the way schematics always assumed, that the person reading it already knew what silane was and how thoroughly the world declined to sell it to strangers.

He stood in the storage unit at 6:50 on a Tuesday morning with his hand still on the controller and laughed, once, short and startled, at his own oversight.

"Of course," he said, to unit 114. "Of course there's a gas."

Silane was how you did this at scale, in a real fab, growing a hundred wafers a run with tight, repeatable control. He didn't need a hundred wafers. He needed one square centimeter of nanowire forest, once, to prove the schematic was real. And the knowledge behind his eyes wasn't a recipe copied off a datasheet — it was an understanding, complete enough to know *why* silane worked, which meant it also knew what else could stand in for it, slower and dirtier, at a scale of exactly one.

Solid silicon powder, carried into the hot zone on an inert gas stream instead of delivered as a reactive vapor, would grow wires too — lower yield, a longer run, nothing a fab would ever put in a spec sheet, but wires nonetheless.

He found four-nine purity silicon powder, ninety-nine point nine nine percent, at a ceramics supply store off Bardstown Road that mostly served potters glazing kiln work, twelve dollars for a jar that would outlast a dozen attempts, no license required, no hazmat form, no institutional account. He picked it up on his lunch break, standing in a shop that smelled like wet clay and glaze dust, and the woman at the register rang him up without a single question about what a data analyst wanted with raw silicon.

"You a potter?" she asked, mostly out of habit.

"No. Materials thing."

"Huh. Well, it's good powder either way." She bagged it. "Have a good one."

He was distracted enough at his desk that Wednesday that Dale stopped by twice in one morning, which had never happened in eight years.

"You didn't flag the Sharonville thing this quarter," Dale said, the second time, standing over the desk with a coffee he hadn't offered to share.

Mohamed looked up from a schematic he'd been running through his own head for the better part of an hour instead of the report actually open on his monitor. "It's still wrong. I'll flag it before end of day."

"You always flag it first thing."

"I know."

Dale studied him a moment, the same look he'd been giving Mohamed on and off for months now, equal parts concern and a manager's practiced instinct not to pry further than the job required. "You good?"

"I'm good. Big week for the hobby thing."

"The hobby thing." Dale said it the way everyone eventually said it, testing the phrase for whatever it might actually be hiding. "You've been saying hobby thing since March."

"It might stop being a hobby soon."

"Yeah?" Dale's eyebrows went up a fraction, more curiosity than he usually spent on anything that wasn't Ohio Valley freight tonnage. "Good for you, Vance. Flag Sharonville before you go, though. Cincinnati's already called twice."

Ray, from the next desk, didn't look up from his monitor but said, in the specific volume calibrated to be overheard, "Told you it wasn't reptiles."

"It was never reptiles, Ray."

"I know that now. Took you four months to confirm it." Ray finally rolled his chair the customary six inches. "Whatever it actually is — good luck with it this week. You've had that look since Monday. The good kind. The kind where a man's about to find out if four months of nights were worth it."

Mohamed flagged Sharonville before he left. Some things, whatever else was happening, still needed doing properly.

He ran the first growth cycle Wednesday evening, later than planned by exactly one day, and sat on the folding chair watching the furnace climb toward its target with the specific mixture of confidence and dread that had become, over four months, almost comfortable to sit inside.

He turned it under the work light for a long time, watching the black stay black at every angle, and said nothing at all, because there was no one in the storage unit to say it to and the moment felt too complete to need narrating.

"You're up late," Cheryl Vance said.

"Been a long day. Good one, though."

"Good how?"

He looked back at the closed roll-up door of unit 114, at the whole unlikely architecture of the last four months sitting behind it in the dark — a furnace from a dead college program, a glove box built from acrylic sheet and caulk, a workbench that used to be a door.

"I think I built something real, Mom," he said. "I won't know for sure until tomorrow. But I think it's real."

The line was quiet for a moment, the particular quiet of a woman deciding how much hope to let into her voice before the facts had earned it.

"What kind of something."

"A battery. A really good one, if I did it right." He exhaled. "I'm not ready to explain the rest of it yet. But that part — I can say that part."

"A battery," she repeated, testing the word the way she tested most things, turning it over for weight. "You built a battery in a storage unit."

"I think so. Tomorrow I'll know."

"Well." He could hear the smile arrive in her voice even though he couldn't see it, the specific warmth she'd never once withheld from him over anything he'd tried and hadn't yet finished trying. "Then tomorrow you call me the second you know. I don't care what time. I've been waiting four months to find out what the storage unit thing actually was, and I'm not waiting one day longer than I have to."

"I'll call you."

"Sleep, Mohamed. Whatever it is, it'll still be there in the morning."

He drove home and, for once, actually slept.

Friday, he assembled the cell.

The glove box work was the same delicate choreography he'd practiced building the electrolyte three weeks earlier, except now everything inside the gauntlets mattered in a way practice never had — the lithium foil cut to size and pressed against the coated anode, the separator membrane chased down twice when it moved on the air from his own hands, the cathode material pressed home, the tabs spot-welded with a capacitive welder he'd bought for ninety dollars off a battery hobbyist forum and taught himself to use on scrap the week before. He carried the finished cell out of the glove box like it was made of moth wings. "It worked," she repeated back, and he could hear her sit down, hear the television click off in the background, hear a woman giving her full and undivided attention to a sentence four months in the making. "Tell me everything. Start from the beginning. I've got nowhere to be."

Mohamed looked at the cell on the workbench, small and ordinary-looking and entirely unlike anything else on Earth, and started, for the first time, to tell her the part of the truth he actually had.

"It's a lithium battery," he said. "But the energy density — how much power it holds for its size — is roughly ten times what's on the market right now. Not a little better. Ten times."

"Ten times." She said the number slowly, the way she'd said *eight million dollars* would sound, months from now, though neither of them knew that yet. "Is that — Mohamed, is that a lot?"

"It's the kind of number that doesn't usually exist outside a research paper nobody expects to see built. If it holds up under real testing, it's worth more than anything I could earn at Meridian in fifty years."

"Fifty years." She let that sit, and he could hear her doing the same kind of careful arithmetic she'd done at the dinner table three weeks earlier, except this time the number pointed the other direction entirely. "How."

"I don't fully know how to explain the how yet. I know the engineering. I checked every part of it I know how to check. It's real, Mom. I built it with my own hands, tonight, in a storage unit, off a jar of pottery-grade silicon powder and a furnace some community college in Ohio didn't want anymore."

"And the part you can't explain?"

He looked at the cell on the workbench a long moment, at the small green multimeter display still holding steady after nearly an hour.

"Give me time," he said. "I promise I'm not hiding it because it's bad. I'm hiding it because I don't have the words for it yet, and I'd rather hand you something true and complete than something true and half-finished."

Cheryl Vance was quiet for a moment, and when she spoke again, her voice had lost the last of its testing edge, settled into something steadier.

"Four months," she said. "Four months of a storage unit and a hollow door for a table and God knows what else, and you did this by yourself, and you still called me every week like nothing was different." A breath. "I don't need the rest of it tonight, baby. I need you to know I'm proud of you, and I need you to sleep, because you sound like you haven't in days."

"I haven't, really."

"Then go home. Sleep. Come Sunday, bring the roast fixings, I'll cook, and you can tell me as much of the rest as you're ready for." A pause, warmer than anything she'd said all call. "You built a battery in a storage unit, Mohamed Vance. Whatever else is going on with you, I already know one thing for certain — you did it right. You always do it right. That much, I never had to wait four months to find out."

"Thanks, Mom."

"Go home," she said again, and hung up first, the way she always did, and Mohamed sat alone in unit 114 with the cell still reading steady on the multimeter and the whole rest of a Friday night in front of him, feeling, for the first time since a Tuesday in March, like the arithmetic had finally, completely, paid out.
